It's just based on your damage and their ailment threshold/your ailment chance pretty much. Bigger hits with bigger (whatever the particular meta skill asks for) will generate more energy.

yea, i found out later that the basic throw was actually better than the lightning spears and etc. I also only realized i can parry but somehow i have always used a shield instead of a buckler. This league so far is meh tbh. I had much more fun with my stun grenade build in the early access
