For defenses, you definitely want resists, and probably energy shield. For damage there are different ways to scale it, not sure the best way to get damage out of spark at that level.

Invoker ascendency says: you can't gain spirit from gear, gain it instead based on evasion/es rating from body Armor

Meaning when you get gear you don't care about spirit

I think it's very good with demon form builds, which actually like to lower their life as much as possible to make it easier to out-regen Demon Form's drain while relying on ES for defense. With the skill tree being so huge and max level only being lvl 100 it seems even if you max out you really only can unlock at most 20% of the passive skill tree. At least from a lvl 13 perspective cause I'm bearly into it with still 87 levels to go.

Jewels are a special item that can have a wide assortment of affixes.

It's basically a wildcard slot, you can put all kinds of things there

Not terribly useful early on, you will likely only have something placeholder with 1 or 2 useful affixes to your build, but nothing wrong with pathing through them
