Weapon: 100 - 200 phys damage with "100% increased Physical Damage" prefix modifier
Tree with 100% inc. physical damage and 100% inc. cold damagge
Gloves with convert 100% of phys -> cold
Damage calc: 100 - 200 phys > 200 - 400 phys (from local) -> 200 - 400 cold (convert) -> 400 - 800 cold (from 100% inc. cold)
note the 100% inc. phys on the tree did nothing
example with 50% convert:
100 - 200 phys -> 200 - 400 phys -> 100 - 200 phys + 100 - 200 cold -> 200 - 400 phys + 200 + 400 cold

If I have 100 phys damage, 20 becomes fire damage

Does that mean my skill only does 20 damage? 80 phys + 20 fire? Or something else?

The game doesn't show you your flat damages for phys/elements, if I could see that then I would be able to tell

Not always one element, but it ends up being mostly that just because any given build will often have one primary skill and that skill will often have one primary damage type. But it can still be the case that you have a weapon that has multiple elements and you scale generalized damage like projectile, attack, elemental, or melee instead of always relying on specific element like fire, lightning, or cold.

But there are builds that use multiple, like LA HoI Deadeye that adds flat cold to Lightning Arrow and uses Freeze explosions for clear. They take both Lightning and Cold damage.

there are some things you would want to incorporate into your build like damage shifts, but it is pretty difficult to get into the theory. But, basically, you want to incorporate much of your main damage skills with the element that is most dominant. And additional damage modifiers, like proj, attack damage, weapon damage, etc

But the fire damage, is now cold damage

So boosting cold damage will now boost both fireball damage and Frost wall damage

What's the best way to go about getting new gear is it through crafting even in campaign? I've not changed like half my armor since act 1 I made myself a halfway decent weapon at the start of act 2 but that's it

most of the power is in gear. Your passive tree doesn't matter a ton. Your damage might feel lacking if you dont use gem combos to get good synergies going with skills. I think the biggest / most important feeling thing in the campaign honestly is keeping weapon up to date and movementspeed boots

I have a 26% block chance shield and went all the block chance passive nodes and my overall block only went up by like 11%

Despite taking numerous block percentage nodes totalling a lot more than 11%

Its likely in the wording and your not understanding it correctly..... I'm guessing the nodes your taking are increasing your block chance by a percentage of your base block chance so your getting like 50% increased block chance which is roughly 11-13% more than what you had prior to changes
