It's so you can have points invested in "Staff damage" when you have staves equipped, and "Bow damage" when you have a bow equipped and it'll swap the skill nodes whenever you swap weapons. It's really a nice system

The early game is tough as your build and gear is limited. I recommend doing the content that you're comfortable with to level up enough so you can deal with the harder stuff. For the passive skill tree it's a good idea to check the notables you're interested in then upgrade in their direction. You have to decide whether to use life or energy shield as your primary form of defence then take that into account too when picking skill nodes. Evasion is a good secondary defensive stat
