From personal experience, it doesnt matter cuz alot of the times your egg may be gone within the first few mins and depending on your skill level you can wipe out a whole with just a pickaxe

I believe the origins of bug have to do with the update where Wall Builders and Emeralds were added

It probably hasn't been fixed in almost 2 years because it's more of a content amount problem, optimization i don't know. .

That, or it's because there was a specific item or thingy that was added in one of the updates that causes the bug, and it's too game changing to remove now.
