to make tools I have to place each individual resource in each slot, and even then it sometimes doesn't give me anything. so if I lost a pickaxe, it can take me 2-5 minutes to craft a new one :/

Yeah basically they spawn on open fence gates and be sent straight down in instead of the water where it flows them and then they go down a lot quicker and more fps 😄
You can do the creeper farm the same way for the pigs but with java under the fence gates
