Currently I built a huge cactus farm in skyblock ranging from basically ground level to height limit, it's 60 layers tall and each layer has 81 cactus so basically 4860 cactus in total.

(It works by destroying the cactus block using fences as soon as it grows), but my question is am not sure how cactus generation and farming works, is there a certain distance or radius I need to be from the farm for it to actually work?

Just do it by hand or make separate farms for each mob, otherwise you can ofc do it by mobsizes, so specific mobs are only getting transported to a specific dropchamber ,which would sort their drops apart
