Just place the amount you'll realistically farm. You can make a farm as big as you want but if you don't fully farm it before it regrows not much use in having it so big.

In the meantime you can farm cobblestone walls while waiting for cocoa to grow

They sell for a lot

Xelia did some calculations that proved cobblestone walls were bad, but those calculations were pretty flawed and mathematically incorrect so its actually pretty good now
