Best trees would be spruce 2x2 , you can also place these next to each other but you don’t have the headache of also needing to deal with those surrounded by leaves. (Not all oak trees are the same height so you need to look inbetween the leaves as well to get your saplings back) you’ll also not receive all saplings back with oak while with spruce you do as long as you lave space between each row of 2

There's a question I've had about the fence gate method. Why place multiple layers or gates? It doesn't seem like the mobs have any room to spawn on any layer except the top layer, or can they?

And you only need to place two blocks above the spawner so that no mob spawns on top of it

That's why having a few layers will increase spawns, as there is then less chance for a mob spawn attempt to fail (only way it fails is if it selects inside spawner)
