For glowstone I had a platform to mine the top half of trees so that I would not have to keep building up to reach the top half. I go through and mine the bottom half first then get on the platform and mine the top half of all the trees. I used a Fortune pickaxe when mining. That's what I did. I don't know if there are any better methods. I am pretty sure the glowstone quests are a pain for everyone. Or is one of the most complained about quests.

I just tested Glowstone. A silk touch axe returned one glowstone dust per glowstone. An empty hand also returned one glowstone dust. A fortune 12 pickaxe returned 2 glowstone dust. If you craft glowstone then break that glowstone it returns 3 glowstone dust. But that doesn't count towards the quest. If you don't believe me you could always test it for yourself. But Fortune does work on glowstone. Fortune 10 will double your harvest. That sounds pretty good to me and does not seem like a waste of diamonds. Especially if one has plenty of diamonds to spend

it's worth using the hopper unless it's purely for xp like pigman because gold generators exist and zombies are much easier to get rotten flesh if you ever decide to get 1000 stacks of it. Also by the time you get wither skeletons you should have enough iron generators to get hoppers whenever you want

I dont think there are a lot of options regarding sugar cane farms. Just a straight line of water and cover up the water.

You could do a mutli layer farm, that way you place down less water. But you have to go up and down each layer

My first farm had 4 sugar cane around each water block. That gets you the most sugar cane per floor space. But it's a pain to set and I dont recommend it. Unless you're really hurting for floor space, which you shouldn't be
