i'm late but, first there is the difference of pvp, it's more interesting to fight in 1.8 (as skuld said, blockhitting, rod, cps, all that is more dynamic). And after as u know in cube, 1.8 is a little part, so we played with the same players everyday, and we became friends but now the community will be split :(

Mostly map wise. And new features games that make use of the new particles/ colors etc.
Currently both versions are quite alike. But this won’t be the case with the 1.12 update due to the new blocks etc. New maps will be released new games, new minigames and others.
The devs would need to change this then for 1.8 a community that is to simply put it to small to invest this much time in. I believe keeping it and not updating it at all seems a worse idea. The community will die down resulting in even more dead lobbies and games.
- instead of the time that devs would spend on the 1.8 anticheat or recoding it to 1.8 they could spend their time on newer games which will help CubeCraft grow as a whole.

Off hand: can't attack with but allow you to use items that require right clicking (eating, shield, bow, potion, block, armour, totem of undying), but your main hand is always prioritised if it can do something, and if you have arrow or firework in your off hand, they will be prioritised when using a bow/crossbow.
Sword: the time between each hit using a sword isn't that long (you can chain crit another entity simply by jumping and hitting while descending) it theoretically take 0.625 second for a sword to fully "charge".
Axe: wood and gold deal 7 damage and stone, iron and diamond deal 9, unlike the sword that have the same attack speed, axes have their own (the better material, the faster it goes), they are able to disable shield with a 25% chance (varies with the enchantment you have on it)
Shield: block any attack and arrow in front of the player (does not work properly in cubecraft, it may be due to the multi version compatibility), does not block tipped arrow effect, fire aspect, poison, wither, hunger.
Bow: when using it it no longer offset the arrow on the right, it's now centred on the crosshair, tipped arrow can apply potion effect (instant damage, poison, weakness, slowness) and even positive effect (instant heath, regeneration, strength, speed).
The more you draw them, the more damage it'll deal, 1 to 10 damage if critical on a non-armoured player.
Elytra: allow gliding, faster ground speed comparatively to normal sprint jumping but replace chestplate, if you have firework (that preferably does not explode) you can fly and engage/escape a fight, also work with a punch I or II bow but is harder to take off from a flat ground.
From here I've never any server using these items in PvP
Totem of undying: allow you to cheat death, if you were supposed to die (except command), you gain absorption II (4 heart) for 5 seconds and regeneration II for 45 seconds, can be held in your off hand.
Crossbow: I've never really used in real pvp but they can lead to some quick shot with one or three arrows if you have the multishot enchantment, or some disorientation using firework, they also have a slightly bigger range of like 5 block
Trident: slightly faster than the gold or diamond axe, with a base damage of 9, it can be thrown for 8 damage, needs to be fully charged (faster than bow) and need to be retrieved unless Loyalty is applied, compatible with Loyalty
Under thunderstorm: With Channeling enchantment, it summon a lightning blot on the target
Under rain/thunderstorm or while touching water: with riptide, lauch you in the direction you're looking at, can be combined with elytra to take off, not compatible with Loyalty

Both Badlion and Lunar might boost your FPS, it just doesn't work for everyone. Try to use low graphic settings and you might want to use a FPS Boosting texturepack, that will most likely help :)
Otherwise, as Jiivan already said, just use Optifine, it works well enough.

I personally don't relish it that much. I am an EU player, normally with about 10 ping. Since today because of the new NA servers, I'm mainly put on NA mini-game servers in the later evenings, so my ping goes to 100 now, which I just don't like. I understand that this is a nice update for the players in NA of course.
