Games will prioritise players from the region the game is set in, but due to low playercount that is often not possible.
You will only find asian games at peak asian time, and even then you have to contest with NA games.

A little trick to see which region you are playing in, in the scoreboard you see always see a code, next to the date.
if that code starts witg G you are in EU, if it starts with N you are in NA and A is for asia

So, as an example: in my case, I'm from Costa Rica, so my regular connection goes from my ISP that is in San José, Costa Rica -> Miami, USA -> Vint Hill USA (where cube's server provider for NA region is)

If I use a VPN to idk, Colombia, my connection goes from San José, Costa Rica -> Miami, USA -> a city in Colombia -> Miami, USA again -> Vint Hill, so the ping increases as it has to move a larger distance.
