AceDB3 Question - data not being written to saved variables

Hey, this question is not specifically about WAs so if it's not allowed please just let me know. Unfortunately, there isn't a discord so far as I can tell. TLDR - I'm following the AceDB3 tutorial while writing a new addon and no matter what I do it will not persist any values I write between sessions. I have tried rewriting the entire thing 4-5 times because I thought I was making a mistake but it's still happening and I'm at a loss.

but also i can tell you right now you didn't specify any saved variables so of course nothing is saved

I set the defaults.

local defaults = {
  profile = {
    debug = true, -- enable debug output
    players = {},
    guilds = {},
  },
}

And then I followed the examples in their tutorial. I think this adds to the saved vars:

self.db.profile.players[name] = record

Is their guide wrong?
