The whole addon is an addon for creating and modifying things like icons.
A Custom Trigger is the way you use code to do that.

Make a new Aura with the Icon Aura Type. Have a Custom Trigger return true.

This is what I mean, in your example you created a new aura with the type icon manually - I wanted to know if I could do that in the custom function to create or modify multiple at once from within 1 object

I assumed they meant a single base Aura which creates different Aura Types based on code.
Reading again you're probably right, but this is frustratingly ambiguous.
