I don’t think that has to be much of a concern in terms of the films. They’re fairly open in showing the characters in different light, most notably Sonic himself. The trio each have their own flaws, even if most disregard them, some of the human cast have their flaws that are highlighted in company. This interpretation of this world is seeing the cast at their humble beginnings and growing better and stronger for it.

And Jeff is a man that has stated that he’s a dude about character above all. If you don’t care about the cast, main character, etc. it isn’t gonna matter

Movie 1’s goal was to cater to make the dude look cute as possible, hence the bigger and rounder irises

Going into 2, it was just to tie the knot on borrowing that design aspect from the games

The few oddities in knuckles are more so just animator hiccups or personal choices. Per Tyson Hesse’s implications and explanation of that cg models can go off model or look different to a viewers eye, just as much as something in 2d can.

MPC (at least for movie 2) was the deadline and Covid, to the point they had to polish going into the blue ray release.
