This is complicated and ultimately my opinion on the matter is: “serious sonic stories cannot work because sonic is both a shonen protagonist and a video game protagonist.” A lot of the time it seems like sonic stories with more nuance earn that nuance by de-emphasizing sonic himself, and video games can’t do that when the player spends the entire game as sonic.
Yahtzee isn’t entirely wrong in the argument but his reasoning is shallow, IMO.

I feel this kinda downplays a lot of the shonen protagonist archetype. Even though they can be simple minded, the stories around those protagonists can give a lot of maturity in their themes and setpieces.
Even someone as simple minded as Luffy in One Piece has a lot of depth to help the readers feel invested. When he gives his hat to Nami in Aarlong Park, how he behaves around Chopper when they meet, his fight with Ussop at Enies Lobby, and many, many more.

It is a comparison that only works on the surface. Most shonen protagonist have a lot of depth with their stories and their world. They may act of a certain way that encapsulates them as simple minded, or idiots even in some cases but they have more to them and I don't think Sonic should lose that shonen protagonist style just to fit the 'jaja funny hedgehog' description some people want to give to him

(Not that it takes too long for the three. Naruto shows both his usual mischeavous personality and his sad side from the getgo, Ichigo takes a bit but shows his modus operandi as he gets used to his new life as a substitute shinigami,and Luffy shows some of it once he faces an antagonist during any of the arc of East Blue)

It may be a simple goal on paper but if you consider that he's a martial artist, you see he wants to improve in any area he can and see the limits he can reach, causing a certain paradox on a goal that, in essence, is never ending or doesn't have a clear way to reach to said goal. .

More particularily the Granolah Arc has some of that thing where Goku wants to become stronger yet doesn't find a proper way of how to grow now that he mastered Ultra Instinct. (The first page is manga #68, at the beginning of Granolah arc). This is brought up again in #83 where he asks Whis about it.
This in Super, for example.
Or in Z, before the Cell games, Goku and Gohan both trained to find a way to become stronger with the Super Saiyan but they do understand that training once more in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber would not give different results than what they could get the first time. Even Future Trunks, who arguably is one of the smartest characters, did not understand that what Goku and Gohan did is better than the 'half states' that Vegeta and him worked on, as they can release bigger charges of power and not suffer the effects of tiredom as hard during a combat.
(Funny like: Master Karin also asks if Goku will ever get satisfied with his powers. He doesn't answer as he wanted to get his point of view on if he could beat Cell with his power)
And like that, there are much more examples that I cannot remember at the moment. Not saying that Goku is the most complex character of all media, that is simply not the case, but he has a certain complexity within his mindset as a fighter that allows him to get better results within his trainings, but also he struggles with other aspects of his mentality, be the Ultra Instinct the epitome of his struggle as his nature as Saiyan makes it much harder for him to find a way to properly control the technique.
And I can think on Luffy too but that's another can of worms lol
