Yeah I think that's more on Secret ring's ambiguety that didn't allow this general idea to hit properly

like the dialogues only imply Erazor and her were a couple

(or, at the very least, that they have a story)

but in general, the plot of stopping Erazor also has to do with an arc for Sharah of getting over the abusive relationship she has with Erazor

and Sonic just helps her out and her world

So this kind of could go into a similar scenario where, while the protagonist is the one leading the actions and subsequent events, most of the things have more to do with the co-protagonist

that's the thing, it's not trying to be like the movies, they all have their own unique "style": Sonic 1 was like a buddy comedy, Sonic 2 was a globetrotter, and Knuckles is a love-letter to 90s sports comedies
