So... Emmet's "Construct-O-Mech". Let's talk about it.

#

In the Lego Movie, this mammoth of OSHA violations can be seen wrecking up micro managers with ease. Seems simple, right? Emmet unlocked his full potential, and is now kicking ass... right?

#

Upon even just a quick examination of the model designed for the movie, it immediately becomes obvious that Emmet may not be as OP as we hoped- with his mech ridded with clutch power and stability issues galore.

#

Alarmingly, certain sections aren't even attached to anything else. Notably the entire hip and leg assembly is isolated from the rest of the torso. Not as easily noticeable is the bulldozer track assemblies on the feet.

#

To add insult to injury, the elements that are just shown with their outlines? Those represent collision errors.

#

In conclusion, after examining Emmet's master building capabilities, I can confidently state the following:

#

Thank you for attending my Brick Talk.

#

If anyone would like to help in modifying Emmet's mech to be something that can actually exist, you are more than welcome to.

#

Because as it currently stands: it cannot even stand.

brazen flicker
#

this is awesome

#

i really should get the lego set of this lmao

vale nimbus
#

The second biggest hurdle is that many visible parts do not come in yellow

vale nimbus
#

...yeah

#

As much as I REALLY don't want to, some design features of the mech will need adjustment

vale nimbus
#

One advantage attempting this now instead of right after the movie came out, is the vast supply of newer parts

brazen flicker
#

like for example if you needed a yellow 4x4 you could just use 2x yellow 2x4

vale nimbus
#

yea

vale nimbus
#

I dunno what to call em so I'm rolling with that

brazen flicker
#

i do not know what i am looking at

vale nimbus
#

These doodads

vale nimbus
#

I think I'll start with the feet, and work my way up

brazen flicker
#

maybe see if you can find the original 3d model or any extra angles from behind the scenes clips

vale nimbus
#

Yeah... this is gonna take a long time

#

But it's worth it

#

...i hope

#

I just found this though, it's kinda sweet
https://www.instructables.com/Construct-O-Mech-Costume/

So I wanted to create a family friendly baby wearing costume, I bega…

#

So far haven't found any useful BTS stuff but here's some more shots from the finished movie

#

Not sure how helpful they'll be though

#

Actually scratch that- these might be very useful, as they give reference to the mech's posture and mobility

vale nimbus
#

This blurry still was the only imagery of the mech I could find

vale nimbus
#

IT'S THIS CLOSE

#

The horrors persist, but so do I

vale nimbus
#

It looks like total ass so far, but it works

quasi hill
#

Idk how any of this works, looks good to me so far

#

Nice job

versed holly
#

test it irl

vale nimbus
#

oh

versed holly
#

i can probs whip up a demo rn

vale nimbus
#

Nice

versed holly
#

u gotta extend the uppermost 3l axle

vale nimbus
#

Ah

versed holly
#

its not flawless but the elevation of the two halves are the same

vale nimbus
#

Thanks!

versed holly
#

its just the distance between the two isnt perfect

#

i estimate 1.5 ldu

vale nimbus
#

I'll implement it after work today 🔥

versed holly
#

do the math lols

vale nimbus
#

ight

vale nimbus
#

For the limb joints, I'm thinking of using this joint system. It should be strong enough for all of the miscellaneous bits n' berries

#

As unlikely as it is to work, I'm also considering at least trying to make functioning knees and ankles. Of course, just because it works in Studio doesn't mean it will work in reality

vale nimbus
brazen flicker
#

though the weight of the upper section might make even the friction joints bend

#

maybe review how the ucs AT-AT does it?

vale nimbus
#

Will do

vale nimbus
#

Starting to feel sick, but I shall press forward

versed holly
vale nimbus
#

Will do

vale nimbus
#

New(er) foot

#

The tread parts are more or less finished, just need to work on the midsection

vale nimbus
#

ankle joint update dropped

#

Positive: it's S T R O N K

#

Negative: it's kinda tall

vale nimbus
#

Currently adjusting the ankle...? to work with the new joint system

#

Results have been, mixed

#

Any advice?

brazen flicker
#

i make buildings not mechs fr

#

also, do you plan to build this model in real life once its done?

vale nimbus
#

After work, I'll probably scrap the ankle joint. It may be too much of a weak point for the structure's weight

#

I plan to continue developing a knee joint, though

#

I'll think of something and keep y'all posted :)

vale nimbus
#

Before scrapping the ankle, I thought I'd try a slightly different joint system

#

I'm also starting to think about how to recreate this shape with parts that actually exist in yellow

vale nimbus
#

So... with everything I have set up in Studio so far, the mech in its current state comes to:

#

This thing is a FAT FUCK

vale nimbus
#

It's kinda crude, but it may work

#

Welcome to the circus Space & Cuber

vale nimbus

#

It's pretty messy atm

#

lmk your honest thoughts, the feedback is helpful

brazen flicker
#

you gotta make some movie accurate micromanagers too for it to be displayed fighting

vale nimbus
#

THAT'D BE SIIIICK

brazen flicker
#

you could also just buy the benny's spaceship set

#

the set is 1:1 with the one from the movie im pretty sure

vale nimbus
#

I actually have that one 🤫

brazen flicker
#

i do too

#

buy an army of the robo skeletons

vale nimbus
#

I'll keep those ideas in mind for the future

brazen flicker
#

im just addicted to dioramas

vale nimbus
#

Bricklink estimates that the mech's parts alone would cost roughly 1,000-1,100 USD

polar acorn
#

I know a browser extension that can tell you what to buy on Pick a Brick vs Bricklink to optimize cost for MOC builds

#

when you get to that stage

vale nimbus
#

Does it work on Firefox?

polar acorn
#

this is the extension I'd have to check if it's on Firefox's store

#

It's worth having setup though regardless, It saved me a ton when I bought the parts for my 1:110 Starship Super Heavy MOC

vale nimbus
#

When the model's ready, I give someone my full permission to animate it dancing lmao

vale nimbus
#

All of you are 💪

brazen flicker
#

also build a full scale replica of bricksburg and have the mech fighting in it fr

vale nimbus
#

parts

brazen flicker
#

my mocs with 6k pieces come out to like £700

vale nimbus
#

Gonna start working on the knees

vale nimbus
#

I'm currently looking at how others have built large mech legs

#

I feel like the pelvis is gonna be among the easiet things to tweak

#

Then again- I've been disasterously wrong before

#

nvm it's good

vale nimbus
#

@tulip spire yo bro can i dm you a joke edit i did of the model

tulip spire
#

Go for it

vale nimbus
#

It said you're not accepting friend requests 😔

tulip spire
#

Odd

#

Let me take a look

#

Ah, right. I forgot I turned them off at one point

vale nimbus
#

Well in a nutshell, it was the mech with a hint of err- RotF Devastator just for shits n giggles

#

...it was funnier in my head

tulip spire
#

You should be able to dm now

#

And friend

vale nimbus
#

Just sent ya a req

vale nimbus
#

Back to the thing

dat azz

#

got a semi-Technic framework going on

#

The original model wasn't even CONNECTED at the waist

#

"YOU WANNA PIECE OF ME?!"
"NO, I WANT TWO!" type shit

#

...now I have both knee and thigh joints to sort out

#

I SHALL PRESS ON RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHH

polar acorn
#

maybe double up either of these types of joints?

vale nimbus
#

The amount of shin real estate I have is... bleak

#

And this was WITH modifications

#

hol'up a sec, lemme show ya

#

@polar acorn

#

Can't even secure these joints to anything

polar acorn
#

Yeah that is a tight spot

vale nimbus
# vale nimbus hmmm

I mean just to get the lower shin/ankle/wtf its called to work, I had to frankenstein THIS

#

However, that ligament had the advantage of being larger

#

sigh
I might have to just say "fuck it" and slightly modify the proportions

#

However, I'm praying that's my ABSOLUTE last resort

#

Actually, considering the overlap is by just half a stud, it might not be so bad

#

Okay, it's only connected by those stud pin thingies, but there's still no real clutch power...

#

It's a start...?

#

yo blank why are you eating lego

#

did you at least season it

vale nimbus
#

YOU ATE BRO'S OTHER CRANE????

#

I'm gonna try something ballsy

#

A technique so ridiculous, it might work

tulip spire
tulip spire
#

I am directly underneath the elder scroll

vale nimbus
#

gotta check yo self before you shrek yo self

vale nimbus
#

@polar acorn Not sure how well this can haul ass though

#

But it'll do, for now at least

polar acorn
#

lookin good

#

apparently they made a 1x3 technic brick recently, just not in black

vale nimbus
#

holy shit they did

#

nice

#

For the time being, I can at least focus on the thighs

vale nimbus
#

It's Sateen, actually

#

I can hear a Lego designer screaming in the distance

#

Screaming in horror

#

I haven't even MENTIONED the hip """joint"""

#

yo chat is a crashout warranted or nah

tulip spire
#

I was going to suggest some strong ratchet hip articulation so it could have the legs be spread apart a little bit but then I realized how heavy it would be and how it doesn't even have ankle tilt to compensate for that hip articulation

tulip spire
vale nimbus
#

Shit I should check how much the model weighs from the waist up

#

jesus christ

#

And that's just for THIS

#

...I'm gonna need a shitload of help on this aren't I

ruby geyser
#

Have you finished this?

vale nimbus
#

Not even close

#

I've only gotten to the knees/thighs

#

Started with the feet

ruby geyser
#

Then what’s that torso?

vale nimbus
#

My goal with this project is to turn it into a stable, strong model- as close to screen accurate as possible

ruby geyser
#

And then sell it

vale nimbus
#

If there's enough demand

#

This is by far the largest project I've ever undergone

#

Everyone here, helping or not, I want to once again say thank you.

#

Thank you for being here, for witnessing this ridiculous dream, for giving advice, for cracking jokes

vale nimbus
#

I'm going overkill on the hip joint

vale nimbus
vale nimbus
#

I'm gonna call it a night and go to bed before I go apeshit lmao

ruby geyser
#

Why don’t you split up the work?

vale nimbus
#

Turn it into a collaborative project?

ruby geyser
#

@dapper lagoon you ever use git with studio files?

#

git merge -m "added torso submodel. Refactored weapons"

vale nimbus
#

Howdy folks, I'm thinking of splitting the model into multiple sections, and letting y'all choose which ones you may wanna take a crack at- if you're okay with it ofc

#

Just an idea to ease the workload

#

What do y'all think?

vale nimbus
#

Idk if that's what Mango meant by splitting up the work, but it sounds like it...?

vale nimbus
#

I just found this piece 😩

#

We might be cooking again boys

vale nimbus
#

All in favor?

ruby geyser
#

I can’t assist right now

#

But it was a suggestion

#

Lots of MOC creators do that joint venture

#

If everyone has time

#

But also

ruby geyser
#

Are the legos supposed to be able to pivot on all axis?

#

Or just one

#

Legs*

vale nimbus
#

I think the legs only pivot on the one axis

#

It looks like that in the movie

#

The arms seem to be far more flexible though

vale nimbus
#

ight boys, go nuts

#

I've got the waist and legs

#

The torso is by far gonna be the most difficult, fyi

Have you used Studio before?

I dont make mechs or anything but have a fair bit of experience with technic

brittle kestrel

vale nimbus

Our biggest challenge by far will be having to design and build structural support for the torso

nvm

thats how normal job interviews work

brittle kestrel

vale nimbus
# zenith thicket Looks easy enough

Well the second challenge with it is this: we're trying to keep the exterior as close to the movie model as possible, even with certain elements that need redesigning

brittle kestrel
#

ok bye

#

gotta do art

#

good luck with the build 👍

vale nimbus
zenith thicket
#

Haha, ofcourse. Dont mind a challenge. Can I ask what timezone ur in?

Okay, im central european. So will be doable to contact

#

I will see if I have some time tomorrow:)

vale nimbus
#

Sounds good, and welcome to the team

zenith thicket
#

Haha thx

vale nimbus
#

Now that I think about it, the single worst part of this project might be designing instructions 🫠

polar acorn
#

instructions go smoother in my experience if you break down the build into its logical sub assemblies ahead of time, during the building process

vale nimbus
#

...well shit

#

uhhhh

#

one moment

#

gonna do that with the legs n feet rq

vale nimbus
#

Alright, how's this for reinforcing (connecting AT ALL) the turntable to the waist?

vale nimbus
#

(This is clearly a joke)

#

low taper fade

vale nimbus
ruby geyser
#

Just yolo it

polar acorn
#

that’s totally what I end up doing on my smaller mocs

#

rebrickable stuff gets the full instructions

vale nimbus
#

Guess you could say...

#

We constructed a team

zenith thicket
zenith thicket
zenith thicket
vale nimbus
#

Copy that; I'll make the adjustments after work

vale nimbus
# vale nimbus

I only just noticed the problem with the 1x1 studs myself

polar acorn
#

sorta wild that there’s visible intersection but studio doesn’t say anything about it

vale nimbus
#

My thoughts exactly

zenith thicket
#

And you always notice when you are finished

#

But then its too late

vale nimbus
#

@zenith thicket Great eye for spotting that!

#

I've said it before, but the great thing about this project is that we can utilize Lego's more modern part catalog

#

@zenith thicket No L brackets vs L brackets

#

As for the giant square gaps, they'll eventually house the thigh/hip joints

#

...once me & Piflle brainstorm something

vale nimbus
#

Ok now that I've taken a lil break with building devastator junior

#

What'chall got?

vale nimbus
#

No new progress on my parts today, how've y'all been doing?

vale nimbus
#

I think I have a solution for the shoulder crane mounts, I'll test it out and show y'all after work

#

I'm also gonna experiment with a (hopefully) more secure mounting scheme for connecting em to the torso

vale nimbus
#

Better defined submodels

#

I'm probably also gonna build a physical mockup of a shoulder sometime tonight, just to really see what works and what doesn't

vale nimbus
#

Just building the barebone model, so I can determine the nitty gritty easier

vale nimbus
#

minifig me for scale

#

Here comes the hard part: Creating the platform that will hold the crane, and to make it structurally sound

#

So the crane assembly is apparently just under 5.5 ounces

#

So maybe I won't have to over-engineer this system too much

#

also SIXTY BUCKS just for ONE crane

#

...i'm sorry, not-so little one

vale nimbus
#

Replicated the current support scheme from the digital model

#

yeahhhhh this is NOT gonna be able to hold a damn CRANE

I'm gonna try cooking up a Technic-based frame

I am about to go apeshit

Okay, I tried replacing the 2x2 round brick with 2 2x2 round plates

#

Not sure how much better this would work, though...

#

Just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks atp

vale nimbus
#

I think I might have a solution for the shoulders. I'm gonna fiddle with my idea for a bit, then show y'all

#

I'm starting with the bare shape

#

Then, I'm going to design a (better) Technic skeleton for the panels to rest on

#

so

#

yeah

vale nimbus
#

This will sound really stupid, but does Studio have a "mirror" tool

#

oh nvm it's "Copy & Mirror" in the corner 💀

#

wooooooooooow good job cg

#

Okay, the original system that connects the shoulders to the mech is just via a single joint, shown in blue. Same applies for how the arms connect to the shoulders, shown in red

#

I think it's safe to say that this system in its current form would be under immense strain in real life- assuming it worked at all given the weights of the shoulders, cranes, and arms

#

What're we thinkin team?

#

FYI, the only thing connecting these two sections, is the shoulder itself

vale nimbus

Regrettably got nothing done today, but I've been mentally picturing possible connections schemes in my head

somber locust
vale nimbus

somber locust
#

okay I made a quick design of what should be a strong joint that should fit

if you can try building it irl to test

vale nimbus

It looks pronising though!

somber locust

should have good motion and enough friction to stay in a given position

note that the 2*2 bricks can be replaced with round plates with technic axle holes

anyway you tell me. IF I was home I would have tested myself but I'm away from home until july so I don't have access to any lego piece in hands

vale nimbus

brittle kestrel

vale nimbus

mornin construct-o-crew

vale nimbus
#

The torso assembly contains 44 of these parts. Problem is: they don't come in yellow

#

WAIT THEY DO???

#

nvm i'm blind

#

The catch is, just those 44 parts comes out to a near exact $200 USD

#

so uhh

that's fun

#

I have been starting to think about how to attach the rollcage/cockpit assembly more securly though

#

As it is on the original model by Xon67 and GLAP23 from Eurobricks, the assembly just kinda... sits there

#

There's nothing holding it in place

polar acorn
vale nimbus
#

they do come in yellow, just expensive as shit

#

Also not really, without MAJOR jank in the model's design

somber locust
vale nimbus
#

I'll give it a look

It's Friday, Friday, gotta construct a mech day

vale nimbus

Weekend's coming up, planning to continue investigating the torso

Strange thing is, despite how questionable its original construction is, most of it still connects together as one piece

#

Just gotta figure out how & why, then build upon that to make it stronger

#

...in theory

somber locust
vale nimbus
#

That's the plan

cuz technic = s t r o n k

omg new message in here- it's just the sticker

#

so umm

#

anyone been able to do stuff?

covert depot
#

Is it not done?

#

Mmm, I guess it is in the wip place

#

Don't think I'd be too interested in doing an assist on this right now, since I've got my own project going on, and I don't know that I'd have much more than an ability to point out surface-level problems

#

But lakes are big and sometimes you neglect a spot or two. Yeah, you'd be the one diving down since I've got my own lake, but maybe you just need another set of eyes on the map alone to find something new, or remind you of something you'd forgotten

vale nimbus
#

The more help the merrier

covert depot
#

So what's the current status of the mech exaactly?

#

What's not working?

somber locust
#

Some people are working on it I believe

covert depot
#

Wait, it''s completely hollow?

#

Lol

#

Isn't the Construct-O-Mech built onscreen?

#

Or, we see the construuction site

#

Found the scene, yeah the main body does kinda just plop down fully constructed but I'll slow the footage down

#

Actually that's probably small enough that I can render it in higher quality

#

Somehow I don't think this will help a ton but, hey, at least there's more leeway to freeze on any individual frame

#

I'll send the stuff immediately preceding that scene as well, just in case any of the pieces Emmet picked out haven't been used in the mech, or if there appears to be structural pieces that are in the scene that seem useful

#

Sorry if this is ground you''ve already covered, obvious though it may be maybe there's something here that hhas been overlooked

#

Listening to music thaat 's been slowed down gives me a different appreciation for that music, so maybe something will catchh your eye here in a differrent way than either full speed or frame by frame

#

AAnd iff you need another clip slowed down I'm your guy I guess lol

vale nimbus
#

The shoulders and feet are finished for now

modern zealot
#

Is it gonna be Rc

#

I'm gonna start brainstormed the arm but I'd want to know whether I'd need the controls to go into the arm or if just having a knob on the side of the arm works

vale nimbus
modern zealot

Ok got it
