#Updating Characters from Savaged.us

I'd like to get a better understanding of how people actually use Savaged.us with Foundry.

#

I can imagine a few scenarios.

#
  1. Create the character, import, and never use Savaged.us again for the lifespan of the character.
#
  1. Create the character, import, manage all data associated with the character in Savaged.us, and update in Foundry on the fly when needed.
#
  1. Create the character, import, manage some aspects of the character in Savaged.us (e.g. advances), but not all (e.g. inventory and money).
#

If you import characters from Savaged.us, drop a note here on which of the above scenarios you fall under and please explain as clearly as possible why that's your method.

So I'm a relatively new SWADE GM and user of this tool but here's how we are currently using it. We are following your scenario #1 because not all my players seem to be willing/capable/whatever to actually take their Foundry updates and port it back over to SAVAGED.US (it's like herding kittens to get them to do what they do now haha). In an ideal world I want them to do #2 scenario. We thought of doing #3 scenario as SAVAGED.US is excellent on the checks & balances for Advances (which is great for us new players/GM for SWADE) until we saw stuff was being overwritten or disappearing and my players were complaining about things being different. To be fair we never really tried to track down what was "overwritten" or changed from import to import.

Hmm, nothing should be overwritten other than currency at the moment. Existing items are left untouched except for skill die sizes. Only new things are added. Or at least that's how it should be as of now.

If you can pin down what's overwritten, please post an issue so I can follow up on it

Regardless, thanks for the insight. 🙂

For context on my original reply, we've only done 3 sessions so far on the campaign where we've leveraged SAVAGED.US to build out our characters and do the original import. Which was immensely helpful.

Late to this convo but my preference is #1 above but the new camapagin manager has my players prefering #2 Unfortunately this inevitably leads to #3 as they add gear or other things in Foundry on the fly during play

We use Savaged importer, and have been using it weekly for a few months. We had been tracking gear in savaged, but we like to customize our gear with images, and in the case of weapons we like to add the extra attacks. When the import comes in there is a duplicate item created for these. So we just stopped putting gear into Savaged at all. Same thing happens with Powers getting re-imported, especially in 50Fathoms. The importer keeps putting powers into their own PP pools, so we have to re-remove the category each time.

Since there isn't an option to turn off currency import we have had to track currency in Savaged, but savaged is harder to track it since I can use currency split, etc., in the table, and now everyone has to go to savaged to do it again -- or else the next import overwrites the currency.

An option to turn off currency import would be great.

# vapid surge Can you say more about the powers? I'm not sure I follow. If you can send me an ...

The powers are in the "General" category because in 50 Fathoms there is only one arcane background, but different masteries. Savaged treats them as separate arcane backgrounds, though. So every time we do an import the powers get set back to having "Water", or whatever, but it doesn't seem to be consistent as some stay under "General". I'm not the one running 50 Fathoms, though, so I'll have to wait until Saturday to get a screenshot of what happens.

# vapid surge Regarding the first issue about customized weapons, are the weapons renamed? If ...

I'll be playing in a group tomorrow night that some players have been putting their gear into savaged. Any gear that has been customized (even leaving the same name) was getting duplicated. It's easy to see which ones are the dupes because they have the default images. I ended up going into the characters in my campaign (different from tomorrow's game) and deleting all their gear out of savaged. I'll go play with it this weekend and add some back and see what happens.

#

Overall, I love the importer so I'll live with whatever quirks I might experience that other people don't

K, I'll note them all down w/ good steps to duplicate.

#

(I'll have to spend time this weekend messing around with it again)

OK, no worries if you don't have time for it

Our use thus far is to initially create in Savaged.us, and do updates/advances during non-game time since the foundry server is offline. During game time we exclusively make updates in foundry. This usually works out other than currency can be overwritten. And perhaps sometimes old discarded items show up again. We like this method since advanced tend to be picked outside of game time throughout the week, then we import/update just before the next game.

I've updated the module to have an option to disable currency updates.
