@topaz salmon Let's just do this in a thread here.

#

So right now you have Foundry v10 installed, correct?

topaz salmon
#

That is correct, that is my current version.

So here is my situation: earlier today I wanted the User Data for Foundry to go directly to my Desktop (I'm using a Macbook Pro, Ventura OS). So to do that, I went into the configuration tab, and typed /Desktop/Foundry VTT into the "User Data Path" section. I received one of those banners at the top of the screen, in red, that essentially stated that that path did not exist. I tried again, this time shortening it to simply /Desktop
Upon doing this, I restarted the Foundry app, but when I turned it back on, nothing came up. Foundry is showing me that it is activated and "turned on," but no pages or screens, the configuration screen where you can download modules, and systems, nothing is showing up.
That's the main problem. I tried some troubleshooting on my own. Specifically, I deleted the app from my computer, and re-downloaded it. Same problem. I tried downloading an older version of Foundry, I even went back to v9.0, still didn't work.

Okay. With Foundry open (even if it isn't working fully), right-click it in the dock and choose Browse User Data. Does that open a folder?

topaz salmon
#

Browse User Data doesn't even showup

#

That's what it shows me.

zinc shuttle
#

Okay, quit that.

#

Go to the Go menu (in Finder), hold the Option key down, and choose Library.

#

In there, open the Application Support folder.

#

In there, go into FoundryVTT.

topaz salmon
#

Okay, I've navigated there.

zinc shuttle
#

Double-click the /Config/options.json file to open it in a text editor.

topaz salmon
#

I only have the Config, Data, and Logs folders.

zinc shuttle
#

Sorry, that's inside Config

topaz salmon
#

Understood, got it open

zinc shuttle
#

What's it got for dataPath?

topaz salmon
#

"dataPath": "/Desktop",

zinc shuttle
#

Okay, yeah, that isn't going to work. Do you want your userdata folder to be on your desktop?

topaz salmon
#

That would be nice, but honestly, I was scared up to this point that I had completely broken Foundry, so I'll take any version that gets it working again.

zinc shuttle
#

Is your Desktop being synced to iCloud Drive?

topaz salmon
#

You see, my issue was that every time I went to go and upload my FoundryVTT to The Forge, I couldn't figure out how to manually navigate to the folder. I didn't know about the Alt key in the Go tab.

topaz salmon
zinc shuttle
#

Sure, you can change the path back to the default, which is the folder you're in right now. Set it to "dataPath": "/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/FoundryVTT",

topaz salmon
#

just to check, does 'Application Support' have a space between the two words?

zinc shuttle
#

Yes.

#

It's fine because the whole path is in quotes.

topaz salmon
#

Okay, I've changed it to that. Will closing this options.json window automatically save these commands?

zinc shuttle
#

Close it, save when asked, then relaunch Foundry, see what happens.

topaz salmon
#

Well I'll be damned! It worked 🙂

#

Seriously, I thought I had permanently broken Foundry for this computer in perpetuity. So thank you very much!

zinc shuttle
#

You're welcome — glad it's working! And now you know how to get to your userdata. 🙂

topaz salmon
#

I was going to ask if you could help me with that.

#

I went back to The Forge to try and follow the correct path, and I'm still struggling to figure out where to start.

zinc shuttle
#

What exactly are you trying to do, with respect to the Forge hosting and your local installation?

topaz salmon
#

Trying to use the Import Wizard, and then "Local Folder"

#

So I start with User, since I'm assuming that's where I would start given that it's the first part of the User Data Path.

#

Then I go to "my user name"

#

But from there, there is no Library option

zinc shuttle
#

No, there won’t be, as it’s a hidden folder (is why we had to hold Option). But you can shortcut around this:

#

Get to your userdata folder in the Finder, and then drag the Data folder from there into the window where you’re trying to find that folder for the import. It will set it to that location.

topaz salmon
#

Should I go one step back from the FoundryVTT folder (which opens to the Config, Data, Logs folders) by going to the Application Support folder, and then drag the whole Foundry VTT folder into another window?

zinc shuttle
#

What does the Forge import wizard tell you to locate?

topaz salmon
#

The website suggests that you select the FVTT folder as a whole, and import everything inside of it.

zinc shuttle
#

What does it explicitly say though? There is no “FVTT” folder.

topaz salmon
#

As opposed to any one particular folder or document inside of the FVTT master folder.

jaunty rock
#

Their website is silly if that is the case, because only the Data folder needs to be ported over

zinc shuttle
#

I need to know exactly which folder it is expecting you to choose.

jaunty rock
#

Screenshotting is always good for this 🙂

topaz salmon
#

For sure

zinc shuttle
#

Cool, there we go. The Data folder.

jaunty rock
#

Ah ha. They want the proper folder. I knew they weren't that silly

zinc shuttle
#

So, back to where we were at before.

#

Open the import wizard thing, click the choose button open the folder location dialog.

topaz salmon
#

Hmmmm, I guess since it's not my first time, I don't need to grab the whole folder then. Okay.

zinc shuttle
#

(Config and Logs are specific to the local machine and never need to be sent to other hosts.)

#

So into the choosing dialog, you're going to drag the FoundryVTT folder — because we want it to take you to that folder location, and then once it's brought you there, you can click on the Data folder in that window to choose it.

topaz salmon
#

Okay, so to grab the whole FoundryVTT folder, I'll need to right-click the Foundry app, select "browe user data" so as to open it in Finder, and then go back one step to "Application Support" in order to be able to grab the whole FoundryVTT folder, correct?

zinc shuttle
#

Yup

topaz salmon
#

Okay, very good, now where specifically would you recommend that I then drop the FoundryVTT folder? Any specific location? The issue I've ran into before when wanting to upload my data to The Forge via the Import Wizard, is that I would always drop it onto my Desktop, but it seemed like the moment I did that, any new modules or scenes or actors that I created through the app, never got sent to that FoundryVTT folder sitting on my Desktop.

zinc shuttle
#

Okay, so to be clear, we're not moving your userdata folder anywhere.

topaz salmon
#

okay

zinc shuttle
#

We're using it as a tool to set the path in the dialog where you're trying to choose a folder to upload.

#

So you need to initiate the process of choosing a folder, by pressing the button in the wizard that pops open a dialog box asking you to find a folder to upload.

topaz salmon
#

Ohhhhh, I'm assuming that what just happened is what we're trying to do: the Import Wizard opened into a folder where I keep my music for Foundry. I then (from what we discussed earlier about opening "browse user data" in Finder), grabbed the Foundry VTT folder dragged and dropped it into that screen/folder that Import Wizard opened up, and then it was as if it renavigated to the Foundry VTT folder (I'm looking at Config, Data, and Logs). That's what we're trying to do?

zinc shuttle
#

Yes exactly.

#

Then pick the Data folder, go.

topaz salmon
#

That worked. Again, thank you so much. I would have never been able to navigate that fix on my own.

zinc shuttle
#

Happy we got you there 🙂
