How do you figure that? Okay we have needs. Things like breathing, digestive needs (including hydration), sleep, shelter, excretion. . . . the 'physiological layer' on Maslow's hierarchy. The economy helps us to meet those needs. It also meets our wants i.e. in a material sense. Things like computers, the internet, television, telephones. Especially at the needs level the economy is... well... needed lol.

Yet even with how far the economy has come, society is still bigger. It is bigger because it deals with other things like relationships, fun, one person thinking what to say tomorrow to... say... a family member.

Then nature - because it all happens on Earth. So too with all the other living things we share the planet with. Plus everything else. How rivers flow, heck even mountain building on the geological timeline.

In the 18 years I studied economics and/or worked in financial services (some years working days and studying nights) there was one thing I did not hear or read: the importance of nature. I have come across many economic terms. . . .

. . . . profits/losses, revenues, costs, fiscal surpluses/losses, a household's or an individual's cashflow, a debt level, interest rates, inflation rates, exchange rates, a stock exchange index, Gross Domestic Product (GDP)/Gross National Product (GNP), prices of goods and services, indifference curves, marginal cost curves, the ISLM model of macroeconomic management, the Aggregate Demand-Aggregate Supply model of macroeconomics, the money supply (of which there are many counts at any given time), real estate prices, home loan balances -- and so on!

Notice something missing: Earth. Yet without it there is no production, no trade, no consumption, nothing. How to explain it to a non-economist? Studying economics without reference to ecology, ecosystems, nature, Earth, the planet is a joke. It is like "studying" and "working in" photography without a camera 😕 . I just mean to say that the Earth is foundational to any economy. It is 'the house' (as per the original definition of economy - something else nobody spoke about) that the world economy depends on. Imagine engineering without blueprints. Yet this is how lost economics has become. Totally lost its way.

You know what I think is very interesting in terms of nature and economics is the use of entropy to be the representation of money. This gives nature the upper hand again.

Look the sun shall burn as it is today for billions of years to come. On this basis I do not concern myself with entropy. I mean heck let us get through the 21st Century first. I do not see why though you are so "down" (or something) on nature. The device you are using to chat, the cables and wires of the internet, your clothes, whatever you are sitting on, everything in the room around you (and outside for that matter). . . . all sourced from the planet.

I do not see how people can 'decide' or something to object to this. I think about this and I do not try to out-think it, out-smart it, out-maneuvre it, or whatever else. It is fact. As fact I accept it. To do anything else is a waste of one's time, energy, thoughts, perceptions, feelings, whatever. And it is a positive. The Earth. Gives us the means to meet our needs and wants. I mean where would we flipping be without it?! Vamoose, pfft, goners. As individuals and collectively. So respect it. It is not only ethical but also from a purely self-interest point of view. It is all we have to even survive - and then perhaps live. This is the good stuff.
