The mother needs a space where she can decompress. It's very difficult to be responsible for children on your own, and presuming she works and cares for the home, she needs that space where she can have quiet.

Young people can bundle up in a room on bunk beds and make do until they are in their later teens at least. The reason is they go to school, hang out with friends, etc.
