I aquired a Stratasys uPrint SE Plus a few days ago, paid only 50 bucks for it. Wanted something cool to tinker woth for a while, and right place at the roght time, lo and behold, this fuckin thing. Kinda always wanted a Stratasys, just cause, ya know, Stratasys. Even if it's a total loss, 50 bucks for the experience is worth it to me.

So far it has just been a pain to move, 2 person job of course, and it uses about 750w while it prints but up to 1200w according to documentation. The front plastic face is a bit brittle, but that's not an issue for me. So far it has just been rationing the power off my my friend's inverter off of the battery pack he has in his van, since the only outlet in the storage unit it currently is in is just a light bulb socket, and pulling 300w makes the voltage sag by almost 10 volts 😬

I have some more pics following this of some of the stuff I have done the last 2 times I have stopped by the unit to tinker with it, and good progress too! More pictures and details will follow in just a bit.

An employee at the place I bought it from told me "ah, it lights up but there's no text on the screen". Turns out, it just has a long bootup time, and they must have turned it off after not seeing text for the first 15 or so seconds after powering up.

#

The inside has a bunch of filament scraps from prints that were not cleaned out before the machine was decommissioned. The tool head is huge, has a mechanically tilting nozzle to swap between 2 filament types, S and M (Presumably for Support and Material, or another similar S and M words)

Gotta love a cheap printer

it has dual sheer yay

already better than t250

Most current update at the moment is that the printer does talk to GrabCAD after changing the IP from Static to Dynamic, HrabCAD did ask for a business liscense, but for Pro features or whatever, that was easily ignored, I dont need it to to really complicated stuff.

Plugged it in over ethernet to a ThinkPad dock, used my phone as a Hotspot for my ThinkPad, then bridged the network connection so the printer is on "a network" (does not seem like it's wirelessly networked, but I have not read through all of the documentation yet).

The feeder on both the filament inputs do work still as well, I can see then swing out in the filament cartridge bays when it starts up doing it's calibration.

The red M Material cartridge has a seemingly very new untouched roll of filament, and the black S Support cartridge is almost empty. No way im gonna pay Stratasys $200+ for soluable support lmao.

#

Next goal is to get it to feed the filament, whoever used it last put orange filament through it, which was not present in the filament cartridges, but there are some remnant leftover prints though, ill post pics of what was still in there when I got it, later.

#

After that, just getting it to print, I was thinking a little Utah Teapot, or just whipping up a little custom logo in Autodesk Fusion, just like the Stratasys Logo and the machine name.

Minor update. Here is one of the leftover printed parts that was left inside the build chamber when I recieved the printer. Definitely... needs some work. But it appears that whomever used it last to print seems to have used some other non-stratasys filament, as the ones it came with are white and a dark green, not orange.

doesn’t look bad just under extruded

rare goblet
#

Yeah it looks fine-ish, I thought it looks a bit underextruded too, but I have been lingering with GrabCAD Print and have been looking at some settings

#

Sadly, as expected, the .print file format for the project file that GrabCAD Print saves as, is not just a renamed .3mf lol.

bronze girder
#

lol

rare goblet
#

Nor is the exported print file format, .cmb, just a renamed .gcode file (binary or ascii gcode)

#

FlashForge and (i think) Ultimaker's print software from a while ago basically did just that

#

Had a friend rename a .gcode to one a flashforge printer expected, and printed just fine

#

Here, it is just much more complicated. Well, for a machine that cost somewhere around $30,000 brand new, type of complicated

u trying to re use the board or smth?

The only 2 selectable layer heights are 0.01in and 0.013in, so ~0.25mm and ~0.33mm layer height

So I dont have the resources at my disposal here and time to do any such thing

#

But he does

#

All of his space is just a tech jungle

#

He does pc repair, IT, systems installations, board level repair, data recovery, electrical engineering, battery tech, etc.

#

Certainly within the scope of his skill

bronze girder
#

no im asking bcs afaik ppl just swap in different boards into the stratasys machines

rare goblet
#

I did see some dude post on r/3dprinting who converted a Stratasys F170 to Kipper, but he stripped out a lot of the electronics and cost about 2k or something all in iirc

#

Not to say that cost would be the same for this, but, that is on the table, for sure

#

I am most interested in seeing it just print something before I leave, seemingly there is no obstruction at the moment to print something, which is very nice

#

I just need to hook up the filament Bowden tubes again and insert the filament cartridges I have

#

I am really lucky to have the 2 cartridges, one for S and M

#

Because it would cost the same as I bought the thing for to just get 1 cartridge on ebay or something lol

#

My only worry is if the little digital filament things with pogo pins in the cartridges that talks to the printer, if those keep track of what's left or something and then denies the printer from printing

#

This is the filament cartridge tech in question that I hope does not obstruct further printing use

# rare goblet always, hahaha

If you have the intention of making a new toolhead for it I extend the same offer as anyone else who buys a stratasys to design you one for free if you can give me some dimensions for the gantry

# barren storm thats why usually everyone just guts the thing

Something we want to test is just giving it filament off an external spool, as whoever last used it, used some orange filament to print some stuff, multiple parts too, and the filament bay M was unused. The filament roll that was in the M cartridge is a pretty unused Olive Green ABS P430 roll.

My friend wants to probe the contacts on the filament cartridge and see what kind of data is being logged/sent/recieved to see if he can sniff what data is being sent, he has the necessary tools for such a thing, I believe. But, it is still on the table for swapping hardware of it bars us from using the machine in that way. He actually was looking at closed loop stepper motors for it already hahaha. We have already done some digging into the Duet board retrofit project someone has made for this machine too, eventually that would be probably what's best for this machine, but for now, that will be on the back burner.

Main thing is going to be the rod distance from eachother, their diameter, the placement of the belt in height and depth, the placement of the nozzle, general width, height and depth of the toolhead

I'll need anything you think I should know in terms of collisions and such with pictures of that

I'll also need to know what hotend, extruder and fan you want to use along with what you want it to be made out of

Little updates from about a week and a half ago: it is in dire need of new belts

#

A Material error for M1, but was solved by just having the material inserted before the printer started up

#

And 2 errors regarding the print gantry movement, probably due to the bad belts

#

How the setup looked using a thinkpad dock ethernet port to make a network bridge for the wifi from my phone Hotspot connected to my thinkpad in order for their (awful) slicing software to communicate to the printer, which it dud without much issue aside from changing the IP configuration a little bit.

#

Basically as far as we got before the printer decided to get the error(s) as shown in a previous picture

#

My involvement is on hiatus right now due to now being 3k miles away from it, but if I have any more updates ill try to remember to post them
