Heya! Currently printing a 16th century knight helmet (8h remaining for this part) and It has printed some weird horizontal lines.

Some more info:
Printer: Elegoo Centauri Carbon
Filament: Elegoo ASA Black
Slicer settings:

  • 5 wall loops
  • 100% Infill
  • tree supports
  • I used the elegoo ASA profile, the only thing I changed was to increase the bed temp from 90ºC to 110ºC after it printed those horizontal lines.

Its very cold in the garage where the printer is (5ºC aprox), I left the heated bed running for a bit before printing so the internal temp was about 21ºC. After upping the bed temp now the internal temperature is 32ºC. Printer is enclosed and there is no cold air currents.

I had a first failed print before that that also had a horizontal line in the same place that became a split. It had a power outage that I tried to resume but I guess it got too cold.

Bed adhesion I get with ASA is VERY good, too strong at times. I always use 3DLAC and sometimes I had issues where the ASA had bonded too hard with the textured PEI plate.

So Im thinking the lines are because:
A) It was too cold and it was a layer separation (it doesn't look like its separating, more like over extrusion or a Z height hickup)
B) Issue with the sliced file
C) ????

I tried looking in orca slicer at the different layer speed/times the pattern doesn't show in any of them.

Any ideas?
For now it seems to have recovered after the 110ºC bed temp bump, but I'll update if something happens

It sounds like you have already taken some good troubleshooting steps by increasing the bed temperature and ensuring the internal temperature of the printer is warmer. The horizontal lines on your print could be caused by various factors, including inconsistent extrusion, Z-axis issues, or even a problem with the sliced file.

Here are a few additional suggestions you can try:

  1. Check the nozzle and extruder assembly for any clogs or debris that could be affecting extrusion.
  2. Ensure that the filament is feeding smoothly and that there are no tangles or snags.
  3. Verify that the Z-axis is moving smoothly and that there are no obstructions or binding.
  4. Consider calibrating your extruder steps/mm to ensure accurate filament flow.
  5. Try printing a calibration cube or benchy to see if the issue persists across different models.

If the issue continues, you may want to experiment with adjusting the print settings such as layer height, temperature, or print speed to see if that help...

Oh, one more thing, just before I did a similar print for another part of the helmet (albeit 6h vs 11h of this one) and it didnt have any of the horizontal lines.
Also, the ASA is feeding through a creality space filament dryer at 65ºC, so it shouldnt be humidity related

It looks like a minor layer shift

#

Usually from the belts in the printer not being tensioned correctly. At higher height they begin to wiggle leading to those small layer shifts

gotcha, once the print finishes I will check on those and the Z rod in case there is any debree or if it needs lubrication or something

Sounds like a solid plan

#

Tighten any potentially loose screws in there too. Usually helps with layer shift.
