#Dump firmware from MKS Gen L board

I have an Artillery Genius printer (identical to Artillery Sidewinder X1) where I want to flash a new firmware. I'm concerned that the new firmware won't work, so I want to dump the old firmware so that I can restore it in case something goes wrong. How do I do that? Is there a way to do it over USB without a circuit debugger? I believe it's an MKS Gen L v1.0 board. The display also has its own firmware.

AI Help

To dump the firmware on your MKS Gen L v1.0 board, you can use a USB cable to connect your printer to a computer and use software like Pronterface or OctoPrint to access the firmware. With Pronterface, you can send the command M503 to view the current settings and firmware. However, it's important to note that most printers do not allow for easy firmware backup without additional hardware or tools. To be cautious, you can also look into creating a custom bootloader to help recover in case the new firmware doesn't work.

Regarding the display firmware, it's typically updated along with the main firmware. Be sure to check compatibility between the main firmware and display firmware versions to avoid any issues. If you have specific concerns about the display firmware, you can reach out to the manufacturer or technical support for guidance.

That sucks. M115 shows me that it's running Marlin 1.1.9 but it only links to the offcial Marlin Github repository. I have no idea what changes Artillery has made to the default Marlin code. M503 only shows acceleration, pid settings and so on that I changed anyway.

marlin uses a config.h and advance_config.h, could try to find those somewhere, but once its built not really a way to lookinto it from the firmware side, need the documentation side

It seems that Artillery at least has a github repository that supposedly contains the Genius firmware but the binaries were all uploaded to Google Drive for some reason and are long gone. I guess I have no choice but to try my luck with the thirdparty firmware and then fall back to this repository if it doesn't work.

That way you don't have to flash potentially sketchy precompiled binaries
