#ULTEM 1010 Adhesion (IDEX 22 V1)

Hey, I’m printing objects with PEI for the first time and I’m having trouble working getting it to adhere to a glass bed.

I initially qualified the machine’s basic functions with a Benchy Print in Fiberon’s ESD PETG before moving on to PEI attempts.

I noticed that the recommend bed temps for materials weren’t getting things to adhere on glass beds with my prior experience with Carborundum plates so I usually up the temps by 10-40C to compensate w/o glue so attempted the same for PEI as its Bed temps are 140-160 but even with.. it’s not doing much to help.

My current settings are:

Left Extruder Head: 400C
Bed: 180C
Chamber: 100C

First layer speed: 10mm/s
Subsequent layers: 20mm/s
Final layer: 20mm/s

Could use any tips or tricks from folks who have worked with UlTEM 1010 (PEI) before. Thanks in advance! 🙏🙏

It sounds like you are experiencing adhesion issues with PEI on a glass bed. Here are some tips that may help you improve bed adhesion:

  1. Clean the bed surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove any oils or residues that may prevent proper adhesion.
  2. Try using a bed adhesive specifically designed for PEI, such as a PEI adhesive sheet or glue stick.
  3. Ensure that the first layer is being squished enough into the bed. You may need to adjust the bed leveling or nozzle height.
  4. Consider lowering the bed temperature slightly, as PEI may not adhere well at higher temperatures.
  5. Experiment with different first layer speeds to find the optimum speed for good adhesion.

Your current settings seem quite high, especially the extruder temperature at 400C. I would recommend checking the manufacturer's guidelines for recommended temperatures for printing with UlTEM 1010 (PEI) to avoid potential damage to your printer or material.

I hope these tips help improve your printing exp...

it's like 20 bucks a bottle lmao

very worth it

The ULTEM 1010 chemical is proprietary so I can’t formulate a adhesive for it with the Mat Sci engineer at my workplace

but yeah. do yourself a favour and get some NPA before you waste more ultem

is bltouch even rated for ultem temps thinkies

kind girder
#

I think the BLtouch stops working above 120C but air temps shouldn’t affect it

#

I know recall from troubleshooting CreatBOT for a year

#

Yeah white/purple is just crisping up like Crepes on these temps, I’ll try convincing the boss on ordering NPA this weekend. Thanks guys.

I’m printing supports for satellite heat sinks

brave talon

oh shit no way

#

I started looking into HT printing bc I wanted to print satilite parts

#

but probably not gonna get to do that anymore bc nasa CSLI got cancelled 😭

These samples are still transparent so the shop that sent us these never did the secondary heat treat you’re supposed to do to PEI/PEEK.

Get away with a lot of stuff in Mfg. apparently.
