#I need help on a design for my desk

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to replicate the functionality of a Spotify Car Thing for use on my desk. For this project, I'm using an Arduino 16x2 LCD and a rotary encoder.

I already have a basic design, but I'm running into a few issues:

It's quite difficult to properly position and mount the LCD and encoder in the current design.

I'm also not really happy with how the enclosure closes and comes together.

I'm looking for ideas or suggestions on how to improve the mounting and overall enclosure design, especially to make everything fit more easily and close more cleanly.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you're working on an interesting project. For improving the mounting and enclosure design, you could consider using design software like Tinkercad or Fusion 360 to create a more customized and precise fit for your LCD and encoder. Utilizing 3D printing allows for intricate designs and customized solutions to address specific fitting issues.

To make the enclosure assembly easier and cleaner, you could explore incorporating snap-fit features or securing mechanisms like screws to ensure a tight and secure closure. Also, paying attention to tolerances and clearances in your design can greatly impact the ease of assembly and aesthetics.

Additionally, you may want to consider reaching out to online communities or forums dedicated to Arduino and 3D printing for more specific advice and inspiration. Good luck with your project!

Does anyone know how to do this?

Can you fit the complete unit on your 3d Printer or do you need to cut it into parts?
Can you use heated inserts? That would open up some options.

Now it appears you have noting to hold the LCD in. I dont know if it has a ribbon cable attached or a seperate one. And what options the LCD has to connect it to something. Does it have holes for screws or lips for clamping or sliding in to a groove for example.

I simply use the bottom lid as a build plate with all the mounting, then cover it with something to make it look alright. Something can be mounted inside the top cover if needed, like LCD or buttons. In your case I'd use the base for the mainboard etc. and the top cover for LCD and controls, that way you'll have unrestricted access to both parts for convenient mounting. Then connect them with some cables and assemble. Or mount everything onto the base if possible. If you wanna go full fancy pants mode use magnets instead of screws. Or come up with something else, the possibilities are infinite. BoJackThumbsUp

You can also use selftapping screws. Like tiny woodscrews. Then you dont need heatinserts.
Bottom plate as mounting for everything is a nice idea!
