As the title reads, my Neptune 3 is having trouble heating. I have used inland filament from Microcenter basically the entirety of the time I’ve been 3D Printing, but 19 bucks a roll is kinda steep. I swapped to this Matte black PLA by Sunlu to see if the brand was any good so that maybe I can save a few bucks. However after I swapped it there has just been nonstop issues when it comes to heating. I’m not sure if it’s correlated or not but essentially I continue to get thermal runway errors if my prints run for longer than an hour or so. I tried PID tuning and it seemed to have fixed the issue until it didn’t.

This Morning, when I went to see how my print was going, it was ANOTHER thermal runway issue but it happened about 6 hours in. But after this, my printer can no longer heat up the hotend, the bed heats just fine. I tried using pronterface to send the heating command directly and that didn’t work either .It doesn’t even make the noise that it makes usually when it starts heating up, it’s just silent. So I have a number of questions:

  1. How do I remove the filament from the hotend if I can’t heat it up at all?
2.I assume it’s the thermistor, but would I be better off just buying a whole new hotend to save the headache?
  2. Is it the cursed filament? Because I have tried sunlu before on another printer and it didn’t cause thermal runway but it kept clogging my hotend.
Thank you so much and I hope that you all can possibly help me with this :)

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Neptune 3 3D printer. Let's try to troubleshoot and address your questions:

  1. To remove filament from the hotend without heating it up, you can try using a filament removal tool like a small Allen key or a pair of tweezers. Gently push the filament upwards to see if you can manually push it through the hotend and extruder.

  2. If you suspect that the thermistor is causing the heating issues, you can first try checking the connections and ensuring they are secure. You may also want to test the thermistor with a multimeter to see if it's functioning properly before replacing it. If the thermistor is indeed faulty, you may opt to replace it separately rather than purchasing a whole new hotend.

  3. While it's possible that the Sunlu filament could be contributing to the thermal runaway issues, it's essential to address the root cause of the heating problems first before attributing it solely to the filament. Experimentin...

Neptune 3 Max, bought it back in September, so it’s virtually brand new, I’ve put in several hundreds of hours into it and it’s always printed pretty much perfect with the occasional tuning. For Slicer I use Cura on default settings for PLA, I notice that I run into thermal runway much faster if I use the .3 layer height profile than when I run my default .2

Literally two days ago it finished a 40 hour helmet print so I’m thoroughly convinced my issues stem from me swapping to a new brand of filament

maybe its not the filament itself but an already loose connection became looser in the swapping process. maybe this is a warranty case? or its just a loose plug? 🤷‍♂️
