what in the world! That is so dope!
It's a work in progress with nothing ready to release yet. I have some work to do on the sturdiness of the antenna, smoothness of the hinge movement, and mating connectors.
I'll definitely be making the STLs available soon!
This project is getting a little crazy. My goal is that when I flip it open, it plays the classic communicator chirping sound, and animates the moire pattern.
The hard part was figuring out how to spin the disc with less than 3/4" to work with underneath - the sound should be easy. Anyway, while I'm waiting on some of the components to come in, maybe I'll work on a vanilla 3d-printable version without all the chaos inside
I don't understand why the disk needs to spin. IIRC, the disk didn't spin in the original.

I seriously thought that was just the camera film's inability to resolve the disk's patterned surface.
haha - nope - they actually mounted stopwatches inside of the hero props - they spun one radial pattern under another creating the animated moire effect
So if you're having trouble doing it in 2025, yet they did it just fine in 1967...
Well... I could have done it the way they did, but I didn't feel like spending $200 on a wind-up stopwatch, tbh
Oh, that's cool.
If it helps at all, any wind-up toy or music box may be useful in recreating the effect.
I, personally, don't think I need mine quite that involved.
I got it handled - I gutted a continuous sweep silent clock movement, stripping out everything but the motor and the gears responsible for driving the second hand
