#New Benchy!
1 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)

He meant that we can make a new Benchy here.
you can't post at all lmao
No.
ok damn
We can just create it here.
i guess so
i'm good to learn smth new
Same.
@foggy raptor do you use anything specific?
What do you use?
I use Fusion.
Also this is pretty valuable information.
No.
bnah
New calibration model.
OMG WE MUST KEEP THAT SAFE
alr fusion it is
We need to come up with an object thats common and everyone who does or doesn't have a printer understands what it is.
Just like the Benchy being a boat.
Do you use Fusion?
no, but i'm a fast learner
Its in the ?benchy command.
3DBenchy
The 3D Benchy is a commonly used model to calibrate both the visual and dimensional accuracy of a FFF(FDM) printer. Due to its near ubiquitous nature this is often regarded as the standard benchmark print making it a useful model to print when seeking help for troubleshooting a model or improving print quality.
Settings for FFF(FDM) Machines
Scale: 1:1 (unmodified in size, from bow to stern #3DBenchy.stl measures 60.00 mm).
Layer height: 0.2 mm
Infill: 10%
Print speed: up to 50 mm/s
Nozzle diameter: 0.4 mm

fusion or onshape
Perfect.
alr guys give me a minute
im used to tinkercad
usually
but i think fusion would be better for this
wait fusion isn't free right?
That could work! We'll add that to a list for now and we'll keep thinking. We should have a list of ideas before we decide on one.
that seems solid
alr thats great
we could work with a really small jigsaw puzzle, like 4 pieces
so we can add in tolerances
i will go make myself some dinner and touch some grass, but i wll be back tmr with some more ideas and hopefully a better knowledge of fusion 360!
that could work
Maybe with different overhangs on each side of the puzzle pieces.
https://www.printables.com/model/1140920-bb-boat-benchmark-step-cad-onshape/comments I swear this is a benchy derivative
the only feature that didn't match is honestly the front hull
its a good ass 1:1 of the benchy wtf
like a really cartoony peppa pig looking car model
Yeah!!
so far i can think of long bridging extrusions for the roof, tolerance testing for the wheels
oh hell naw
Why not?
dunno where would we fit overhangs though
True.
but how would we squish OTHER tests in it?
the idea and success of the benchy is that its packed with tests
Just another calibration cube...
too unoriginal
Not the worst idea. People know what a cube is.
the point of the benchy was, is to torture test the printer, while getting a good looking print at the end
calibration cubes are NOT viable for that
Chubby croc is my new standard
And that its a common thing. Everyone knows what a boat is.
also the same for the car idea
exactly
what about a tent
or an igloo
the igloo might be able to fit more test
Thats true.
I think we might be focusing on the wrong thing right now.
We need to know what tests we want our model to do.
nah we need an inspiration first, then we pack tests into it ๐
though that method also works
i feel like @oak flax is right
the benchy wasn't a tolerance test
well we want overhangs
it was a torture test
All it needs is overhangs and dimensional accuracy tbh
speed too tho
fine features too
No not really
Easily measurable features
We want to be able to do fast versions of these models too. Just like how people do speed boats.
you know that em waveform? we could pack it in the back
or something, it could work as a fine feature test
Waveform? Whats that?
like electromagnetic wave formula?
Then they should slice their prints to be fast
maybe later, we need more tests
bridging test and PA test too
even benchy doesn't do that, if it doesn't print, you got bad adhesion lmao
for the bed adhesion, we should make it different to how benchy did it
How do you test bridging over a small model? 5mm of bridging isn't a good benchmark
also igloo wouldnt be possible without supports
Well yeah thats what you have to do to go fast. The Benchy seems to always be used to test speed.
well

Because everyone knows what the benchy is and how long an average benchy print should take
This will help us a lot.
We can try and do that on this model.
we should try and work and cross out or approve different model ideas individually
essentially in a google doc
yes definitely
are we assigning story points for that
Is there anyway for me to join that without sharing my Gmail?
What do you mean?
i... think so?
probably not, as it would need to have public editing access
and we wouldnt want that
the setup is too corporate, we should send drawings even if crappy
yeah, make it a bit more traditional
though could take a little time, you could create a separate account for this
so we could have:
overhangs
dimensional accuracy
holes - cylindrical shapes in general
symmetry
We can have a word on the side and bottom of the igloo just like the Benchy.
we can also add tiny details in just like the steering wheel for the benchy
but we'd have to design it REALLY, REALLY well for it to print without supports though
no more than 60ยบ overhangs for the inside
We've got time ๐คทโโ๏ธ.
And it doesn't have to be an igloo. We can always think of a new idea, but for now this is the best one.
For sure!
we should probably look at objects around the house first tbh, then compile it ourselves what are the merits of the object in question before sharing. I've noticed we're sticking to just one idea right now which is quite inefficient
of course!
im kinda tired for this right now, we should schedule a brainstorming session sometime
currently 11:49 pm
mostly like right now
but with more organization into it
Yeah that'd be great!
i think im going to sleep, people
but mind will not cease at printer benchmark ideas, i will come back tomorrow with a fuckload of ideas
f course!
have a nice night, @foggy raptor
and thanks, y'all. for helping and being awesome people
but how i think it should work:
- everybody lists ideas
- start discussing about ideas, point out pros and cons, tests that can be fit into, but each individually, with focus on each one, maybe a mention of a past idea.
- start crossing out ideas until we find the one
- start sketching
- start the first versions of the model
after that, development will play out by itself
should have brought a mouse, I have an idea but won't tell lol
so anyone thats interested in helping in this project, grab your preferred text editor and start writing out ideas, after you're done you can dm me it or send it here, and ill create a big google doc of ideas which we'll discuss over
ill also write a list of my own
but anyways, good night people!
me too ๐
in mm?
Yes.
i'd say 60x60 is fine
but in that case
we will have to be less detailed with more things (outside, windows, etc)
assuming we are doing igloo (I'm just using it as an example)
The Benchy is about that size though.
it is?
It has a bunch of tests.
Yup.
wait a minute
what about a filament spool of some sort?
definetly overhangs
the detailed lines could be considered dimensional accuracy
I thought about that, but that'd be difficult to print.
how so?
Because either way you print it, it needs supports.
oh true
because if you print it on the cardboard
like the face of the spool
then the overhangs are 90 degrees
also, fusion 360 is giving me attitude, so i cant use it
do you have any other preferences?
I could try Onshape.
If that works for you.
let me take a look at it
I honestly thought of this but decided against it because it is way too cool lol
That only helps.
It being cool means more people are interested.
thats a great idea
its also nerd-ish
I thought so too!
You're in a damn 3DP server.
me when I inviter derra
We're all nerds.

That's not PEEK
Aircraft related: Jetty or Planey
Space Related: Spacey or Shippy
throw down my proposal
๐ฅฆ + ๐ป
Truckoli
IMO something space related is likely to have more "natural" features you can measure
it honestly ends like a cylinder if its space related ๐
futuristic space design needed
Nah, just do a futuristic object. Have thrusters, etc.
Those are all defined features that can integrate overhangs, bridging, fine details, on top of having defined dimensions you can easily measure.
why we not goin with https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4575774
This is my Print in Place Engine Benchmark! Its designed to test your 3D-printer!Check out the video on how it works, and how it was designed.Update!! - V8 available here!Update! - Easy to print 1-cyl version available here.Update! V-Twin variant available here! See how it works, and how it was designed!:https://youtu.be/DFjD8iOUx0I Important:-...
specifically the v8
because v6's are garbo
Almost none of us are good at CAD.
sir, I will have you know, I am perfectly below mediocre
imagine the search terms: 3DEngine
3DEngine CAD
3DEngine Cad Thingiverse 3d printing
Thats true.
the second option in the search engine be like:
V8 3D printing benchmark
V8 3DEngine 3dp benchmark -> Did you mean: V8 3D Engine 3DP benchmark (shows full scale 3dp engines)
to be fair this only demonstrates why we need a good name
hey that would be a pretty good benchmark
most people's printers could barely fit a single cylinder
let alone 8
SPACE SHUTTLE
idk what the fuck am I doing
that thruster part is unprintable bet
stubby ahh jet
yeah...
I can try and draw something, but I can't model it.
my hands are a bit hurting since I'm also modelling this in freecad + trackpoint lmao
no mouse
Oof.
oh wait I think I have a model for submission
Sign in to Onshape, the #1 fastest growing CAD system in the world with over 4 million users.
was not sure what purpose it had at the time
now I know its' true calling

hell naw
๐
need better modeller
I bet this can be printed upwards though while providing the same print test perf
Thats what I was thinking.
Add a cockpit
bet we can even make it look like an X-29
That'd be cool.
that would also provide the vertical print with a decent wing that actually works with FDM
Yeah!
oh... The nose cone payload can act as a tolerance test
you can have it be detached from the print and then slide mechanism in to attach it
lmao IKEA rocket benchy
bunch of tolerance tests , bit of bridge tests, overhang test and the likes
Windows will be really helpful.
Makes it really easy to sneak in overhang and tolerance tests.
that could be a detail test, inset windows
actually you know what even funnier, add a hole on the front and a pin on the back
you can dock the jets
Cool, but unnecessary.
the benchy can be docked
What?
nah I think the docking idea would be funny
people can print adapters and make their own ISS too
Thats not the point though...
print solar panels too
We're making the new Benchy though.
and I think adding new funny features on it would be fun
people can use it as a test print, and as a toy later on
Agree to disagree.
I think a true next gen bench model needs to have some element of interference fit test
speed benchies was gamed to hell because it didn't have to meet any sort of functional criteria
so long as the general shape looked like a boat, seems it got a pass
Ah I didn't think about that.
You're absolutely right.
minimum tolerance of 0.2mm i guess
i can do some light modeling in blender
We'll take any help we can get.
All of us suck at modeling.
need to come up with an actual concept instead of randomly modeling stuff
or you'll end up with something like this
Is that a train with eyes?
sir those are tail lights
smh my head
Trains have those?
mine does
You have a train?
Ok.
that was simply an exercise of my CAD prowess
Ah ok.
Nice more insperation.
No.
Hello
Yes this chair
orcay.... (whale...)
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4803370
can we also get something that includes simple tolrences... that one area benchy seems to miss
It's the Torture Toaster! The guys at Edge of Tech challenged me to make a torture test that would be fun and interesting, and this ridiculous thing is where I ended up :) This will test your print tolerances, overhang handling, and most of all, your bed adhesion! No supports required, though! It's not as torturous as it sounds, though, and ...
if you print in grey... it fuses especially if a holden..
Yeah Wifi mentioned that there should be tolerance tests because the only criteria for a good speed Benchy is for it to follow the rules and look like a boat shaped object.
orca whale with removable fins...
we can do a merge into orca maybe (if thats got no copyright on it) and then can be in the default calibration tests..
too much plastic
but i like the beepy
i agree... smaller toasters...
beepy is great!
idk anything better than calidragon for speeds and overhangs
https://www.printables.com/model/209121-cali-dragon
looking for smth
3 part Train
Train and caboose that test seperate printer specs and cars that test filament
I dont think ill be able to do this with a million accel lmao
Have you seen Derra's idea?
I think something like this is a good idea
it's useful, and you have to assemble it and show that it works after
no
The train would be more useful
Benchy popular because people wanted to add to it outside of its benchmark purpose
A train would welcome people to add to the design in the form of cars
No lol.
Its popular because its a boat.
Everyone knows what a boat is.
Everyone knows what a train is
Everyone knows what a jet is.
Could you get the intricate specs of benchy in a jet?
Yes.
something that showcases it passes some kind of tolerance
whether it's a print-in-place articulating object, or an assembling object that slides together like orca's cube or the tool kevin linked above
Honestly, orca cube isn't a bad choice
Kevin do you see anything wrong with a train?
Which one
A new model
Entirely new
Like a steam train with specs similar to benchy and cars that test filament
Not sure. Seems like a good idea
It would encourage the printing community to model their own cars and accessories which would be the equivalent of what benchy was trying to be
beepy jeepy is great... but one minor issue with this, is no z offset testing.... (printing my first jeep)
i wish they would say the tolerances between the parts, like if its 0mm, 0.05 or 0.1mm like the orca tolerance test
It could work
CC with attribution is workable
Not a great replacement for the benchy tbh
I had to turn on my aux fan for it to print good
More like a bridging torture test than overall calibration model
Beepy Jeepy is growing on me.
Common object โ
Tests a lot of stuff โ
Small and fast to print โ
That checks off all of the boxes.
no benchy hull line ๐
SpeedBeepyRace
Iโm here for it
What?
benchy hull line
The change in speed due to going from the bottom of the hull to doing the deck often causes a line due to the layers taking longer
is there an easy way to do this in orca
no idea man
If you print in a chamber with the temp around material tg, there shouldn't be a hull line
tg?
also jeepy is harder than i thought it would be maybe a bit useful
