Restoration, Renovation, or Reimaging with modern design understanding?
gonna try to get it working as it was back in 2012
I'd say more 2013-14 due to the JHead MkV & Rep2-based spring-tension extruder
ooh ok
yup
wiring it up to the psu
previous owner was nice enough to lable the woires
so should i just switch it on? @swift flume
i think i have it wired correctly
check for shorts w/ a multimeter and doublecheck wiring
i dont have a multimeter
its prolly fine all the wiring i did was to the psu
how do i connect it with usb?
it didnt explode
uhhh plug a micro usb-b into the port on the mainboard & use pronterface?
115200 most likely
install serial monitor and itll tell you what com appears when you plug it in
may need to install ch340 drivers
the arduino thing?
no it's a window tray service, I may misremember the name
maybe serial port monitor
hmmm cant find it
the gang is here
Serial Port Notifier - HelmPCB https://search.app/xKZ6bQ3G3zjztX6J6
i just had to look up what i use... yeah... Serial Port Notifier.
well did you install the ch340 drivers?
thats the first thing i would check, the second would be a proper USB-cable
ok thank you very much
nice
also install putty as a serial console alternative
so now what
nothing is showing up

notification sound is good
you can also check device manager
or run mode in windows command line
theres this one
maybe. Some of the name sounds like it, but it could also be the integrated hub on your motherboard
well unplug the mendel and see whether that device manager entry goes away
yeah it goes away
also try other usb-ports
did you reboot your windows machine after installing the driver
(some mainboards only have one or two "true" usb-ports, the rest go through kind of an internal multiplexer/hub)
do that then
oh, reboot!
perfect. 🙂
this machine sounds so bad
the amount of shite a reboot fixes is unreal
if that doesn't help we may beed the CP2102 drivers https://www.silabs.com/developer-tools/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers
uh oh computer isn’t turning back on
ope
also pleas don't do that with the bed, your electronics are old enough that they could get damaged
ah your right mb
good point. A lot of actual boards will also die if you move stuff by hand
Duets wont
duet and duet clones were pretty resilient so far
they have diodes in place to make that harder
still getting none in the thing
CP2102 time
gnah... which board are we talking?
a 2013 era sanguinolo I assume
this… thing
clone but yeah
ugh. Ok, im out of my knowledge here
thanks for your help
another reboot time
check ftdi problems on this site
Melzi - RepRap https://search.app/pKfkNpo14rgCRDVM8
that board runs a non genuine ftdi serial chip
no idea whether any of the workarounds work or if the ftdi clone chip on that board is bricked
I'd check from a linux box
not important right now, but for the future...
(live cd boot if you dont have like an rPi flying around)
that’s not my board tho
does a pico count
no, something that runs Linux
welp then i’m out of luck
yours will be a clone, so probably still a thing to consider. Yours could be a hybrid
you! could make a live usb
A handy tool to have
thats just from where the board gets powered
ah
It just means that the board won't be powered by USB but by the PSU
@tropic sparrow that looks broken?
Nope, just package variant
okay
could hitting reset break things
nope
ok reset it is
but im not sure it solves anything.
let’s see if it fixes things
^^
i can cope
its more if you´re in a state you dont want to be/cant exit
The big pad at the back is pin 2 as well, for future reference
hotend burning red, menu items not working
so yeah i’m getting the usb unplug and plug sound but nothing pops up
maybe if i put an sd card in?
idk
its unlikely to help
thats weird. Sounds like a driver issue, so correct driver not installed
maybe if there is an uart header exposed you can try using an usb/serial adapter
no its the broken ftdi clone
do you think that’s what’s cooked
darn...
so should i buy a replacement mainboard for it?
see the reprap page I linked
its in the FAQ
where are you located @sage epoch?
us
darn, would have sent you one of my old spares if in EU
damn
so if you get a replacement board, dont try and get another melzi
go direct for an skr3 or fly super5 or somesuch
swapping all these screw terminals seems like a pain
i’m gonna try the workaround first
unless you want to relive the pain of trying to fit Marlin into an 1284p
if you have the time to invest, yes
yes try the workaround first
else... am i allowed to recommend a duet?
always
put a duet3 mini on a mendel (-;
originals even
yup. After 12 or so great clones. Of which i gifted away some. kuya and ninsa have some iirc
oh, and ded ofc
Or an $15 Duet refurb from Filastruder
$15? o,0
Board only, no accessories. These are boards that are used, some of them internally (by us) and some externally (by customers). Some may have faults, if the faults are known they are listed here. They all may have faults that are not listed here, not worth the time to fully test all features. However, all boards have t
duet2 wifi
yeah those will be fine @sage epoch fetch
agh but thats so much crimping
they wont have all the great features due to lack of ram and flash
34 whole crimps
you gotta die one death
I don't know how to decode these magic numbers like 0.8.5 - 213/300
death by iwiss
but its a great death
ok unplugging fire hazard printer and taking a break
i literally crimped all my duet stuff once on all my printers, and never looked back
and on the laser. And CNC.
with the duet i could run rrf right
yessir
those arent duet2 wifi but Duet 0.8.5 boards
do not get those
wow im gonn ahave every flavor of firmware
sometimes you have to
you can also just get an skr3 with wifi module and run rrf on that
most of my stuff is duet, but two flatpacks running klipper and marlin
fly is also cool.
i shoud have just bought the skr3 when it was super cheap
you finished second flatpack?
to be fair, an skr pico will probably be enough
flatpackrev is not yet in working order but moves.
whats that super tiny board
skr pico or AIO II
how does this thing do z tilt? there are two z motors
Only 0.8.5 in stock
you could reduce the current and ram the gantry up to some collars to align like prusa does
is it two motors on independent drivers? might also add two z endstops and do G34 on a modern Marlin
It'll be two motors wired together to one driver
then Tushonks approach will do
