I'll be starting Humperdoe's ender-stinger build; however, since it's discontinued, I plan on adding a bit to it in cad. This will be my first build, and I'm hoping to keep my budget within the $400 range. As of right now, the BOM is not finished, and I still need to go through the model's hardware to finish it. There's quite a bit of stuff that I need to buy, and I wont list all of the stuff, but some of the modifications that I will be doing is as follows:

  • BTT Octopus v1.1
  • BTT pi v1.2
  • Belted Z
  • AWD X and Y axis
  • StepperOnline Nema17 42-48 2004s
  • Stinger Toolhead
  • Quickdraw Klicky Probe
  • Linear rails (XY)
  • LH Stinger AUX fan

I'll link the BOM when I get to it, but for now I'm going to bed. Thanks, Kevin and Kol for inspiring me to do my first printer build. It will probably take 4 - 10 months just for me to get all of the parts, but I'll do as much as I can in the meantime.

tawny swallow
#

I'll order all the stuff I need for belted z very soon.

More parts for both x and z axes

tawny swallow
#

Everything I should need for the belted z has been ordered

#

minus some screws which i'll get at a local hardware shop

tawny swallow
#

Also ordered 1 more 42-38

Minor changes

strange cedar

my petg-cf belted z parts have held up just fine for 2 months now

tawny swallow
tawny swallow
#

2/3 of the belted z stuff just arrived

tawny swallow
#

the item that arrives last is the one i need the most feelssobman

tawny swallow
#

Ordered the wrong bearings, but I can use them for my x and y axes thankfully.

faint scroll
#

are you doing all of this on one machine? like both printing and modding?

tawny swallow
#

I'm printing all of the parts on my ender 3 s1

Rods cut and bearings finally arrived

Man I totally missed that you had a project forum open

#

I’d have been in here for a while had I known

#

Those Z motors are looking 🔥

#

Maybe I need to do AWD X vaulthah

quaint ocean
#

Forget stinger has those. Could make them adjustable or something, wouldn’t be hard

#

Though Kevin’s idea is to just add an entire extra extrusion, but that’s a good deal more work

#

Feet would require though that I remove the power supply on the back since it’s under the motor

tawny swallow
quaint ocean
#

I’d previously done 500/1mil/120 on Ellis speed test but it apparently crapped out on 500/200k/60 or whatever this was on LH speed test

#

But it was Y that crapped out so I have no idea what to believe right now

tawny swallow
#

planning to get the breakout board from the LH stinger. I'm also problably gonna buy the stinger cf heatbed to use in this build as well so hopefully I wont have too many Y-axis issues.

tawny swallow
tame orbit
tawny swallow

I also use the same steppers on my s1 and they work very well

tame orbit
tawny swallow
#

I kept the current the same because these motors honestly get hotter than the originals

Nice

tawny swallow

Top idlers printed, no more need for the velcro loop

#

I still need longer m5 screws for the other side unfortunately

PP-CF for lightweight fanducts

tame orbit
#

Polycarobonate cf?

#

PC-CF prints reccomended 280-310 prolly like 110 on the bed. But has a very high tG. Im thinking abiut movint to that for hotend stuff. My thinner ABS parts still start to warp in my Enc.

tawny swallow
#

Not sure I can print pc-cf without an enclosure feelssobman

sinful zephyr
#

i print abs and asa at those temps

strange cedar
#

nope that's about right

#

maybe a little low

#

pc will punish you if your chamber's not hot though

tame orbit
sinful zephyr
#

you need at the very very very minimum 90c

#

and usually 120c

quaint ocean
#

Pure PC requires hotter chambers but PC-CF is manageable on typical enclosed printers

#

PA-CF and PC-CF are much easier than their non-filled counterparts

#

Lemur Haze had a video of printing PA-CF on the Stinger unenclosed with a draft shield and the parts look nice

#

Also the hotter chambers generally just make it easier. Larger parts are a much bigger issue but small stuff can be done pretty easily without high chamber temps since there’s nowhere near as much material to warp

sinful zephyr
#

when i did research on it

quaint ocean
#

Since CF reduces warping

sinful zephyr
#

ngl id still stick to abs or asa

quaint ocean
#

CF does improve thermal properties

#

But both are mainly used to control warping

tawny swallow
#

I'll probably print everything else out of asa-cf

quaint ocean
tawny swallow
#

unenclosed excellent

sinful zephyr
#

maybe petg will be fine unenclosed

#

ifk tho

quaint ocean
#

Um

#

Yeah

sinful zephyr
quaint ocean
#

That’s literally what PETG is made for

#

Is being able to be printed unenclosed

sinful zephyr
tawny swallow
#

Petg cf printed fantastic

quaint ocean
#

Though gets significantly stronger in an enclosure

sinful zephyr
#

if you are printing with petg parts enclosed they might get too soft

#

as in like the toolhead and belted z

quaint ocean
#

We’re talking different stuff

sinful zephyr
tawny swallow
#

Screws are gonna take a while to arrive

#

I changed my mind on buying them from a local hardware shop after I saw the total cost

quaint ocean
#

Buying screws local is absolutely fucked. Like two M5 screws at Lowe’s is like $5

tawny swallow
#

Thats worse than it is here

sinful zephyr
#

ik a guy who can get a kilo of screws for like 6 dollars

tawny swallow
#

All of the screws I needed would have cost above $55

sinful zephyr
#

but not me i will probably pay $5 for 2 m5s as well

quaint ocean
#

I said Lowe’s

sinful zephyr
#

dont quote me on this

quaint ocean
#

Bruh I’m in US…

#

Lowe’s is a chain big-box store

strange cedar
sinful zephyr
strange cedar
#

b/c imperial is standard

#

at my local home depot the metric fasteners are confined to one drawer cabinet

quaint ocean
#

Or it’s corporate exploitation of people who don’t understand that you don’t have to spend $5 for two M5 screws

sinful zephyr
quaint ocean
#

Same at Lowe’s

sinful zephyr
#

instead of stinger

tawny swallow
#

Dragon hf hotend

strange cedar
#

well, not a lot of people in the US are going out to the hardware store for metric screws

tawny swallow
#

And klicky

strange cedar
#

especially not to home improvement focused places like HD or lowe's

#

so the prices are higher

sinful zephyr
strange cedar
#

kevin's toolhead is uhf length

sinful zephyr
#

oh yah

#

i ran into that issue

#

i needed to buy mze

tawny swallow
#

Yeah, I'm planning to use the dragon with an mze

sinful zephyr
#

so you will do kevins later on?

tawny swallow
#

I wasn't planning on doing so

strange cedar
#

nothing super special about it either way

sinful zephyr
#

which is an improvement over the stinger

strange cedar
#

is this some sort of 5015 joke i'm too 4010pilled to understand

sinful zephyr
#

and the reason why is because 5015s arent mirrored

tawny swallow

One of the 5015s is choked out on the stinger toolhead

Finally got m5 screws long enough for the complete z axis. The X axis is pretty much finished as well, I just need the actual motors as well as more filament because I'm out

tawny swallow
#

The rails are just on temporarily with 2 screws each (because I ran out of m3 T nuts)

tawny swallow
#

Taking a small break since I have finals coming up and christmas around the corner. All I have left to order is the bed and electronics.

wanton aspen
#

is there a cad file and bom for this?

wanton aspen
#

@tawny swallow okay i found the cad, how do i go about making one of these is it complete?

tawny swallow
wanton aspen
#

would it

#

work

tawny swallow
#

I'm sure it would, but the .cfg would have to be tweaked (from the original stinger)

#

Or you could make one from scratch

wanton aspen
#

oh thats fine

wanton aspen
tawny swallow
#

I haven't finished it yet so it's hard to say, but I estimate anywhere from 400 to 600 usd

wanton aspen
#

ohhh thats too much for me lol

tawny swallow
#

Yeah, if you're going for budget, I'd reccomend Kol's or Kevin's build

wanton aspen
#

Okay

tawny swallow
#

got all of the hotend stuffs

#

just a portion of it

#

i've been putting off redesigning the mount for the lhs breakout board but i'll get to it soon (maybe)

tawny swallow
#

waiting for the winter sale to buy the bed and the motors.

tawny swallow
quaint ocean
#

I can’t tell if everything in this image is big or if that’s a little baby PSU

tawny swallow
#

it's definitely a little baby psu

tawny swallow
#

Still waiting for the mze, but the hotend is now here yay

tawny swallow
#

Small amount of wiring done

#

I could've finished if I didn't run out of fork connectors

#

I'll try to redesign the y axis motor mounts to be less bulky

tawny swallow
quaint ocean
#

To the extrusion

tawny swallow
#

still figuring that part out

#

It might be something like this

quaint ocean
#

I would be concerned about the strength of the interface in that case

#

Also you’d have to create a channel through the entire part to screw those in

tawny swallow
#

I used the word screws too many times

tawny swallow
#

Not entirely sure how it will hold up over time, but we'll see

#

The bed has been recieved

tawny swallow
#

Current state of the ebox

#

I don't have a green or white wire that's flexible enough to bend like the ones shown, so I'll get those soon. I'm also out of fork connectors and terminals as well (which I'll also be getting soon)

tawny swallow
#

I'm gonna prototype the first version tomorrow hopefully

#

it should print in 3 pieces; the 2 red pieces need to be glued together

tawny swallow
#

I've got the ebox all wired up and working

#

it only costed me a burnt out relay

#

totally didnt wire it backwards

tawny swallow
#

Not sure if it's the current version of cb1 software, but i cannot for the life of me get this pi to connect to wifi

#

I'll try an older version

tawny swallow
#

finally fixed it

#

no idea what was wrong

tawny swallow
#

I just need to order the breakout board and motors now pretty much

tawny swallow
#

The back wiring is only temporary for now since I blew my relay, but everything functions as intended

unique skiff
#

Any reason for the one open driver slot?

tawny swallow
#

I'm planning on going off of the stinger's config

#

everything will be in the same place as the stinger except for the additional driver for the x axis

#

I could change it to make it neater though

tawny swallow
#

The 2 bottom pieces of the build plate have been glued together with epoxy

tawny swallow
#

currently making a version compatible with linear rails since it's an upgrade I plan on doing down the line.

tawny swallow
tawny swallow
unique skiff
#

Sleek

tawny swallow

gonna have to modify it to make it more printable

#

or not who knows

tawny swallow
#

ok that should be slightly better

tame orbit
#

How did bed mounting go?

tawny swallow
#

Gonna print out the mounts soon

#

I don't have them printed yet

tawny swallow
#

Ready to make the sock

tawny swallow
#

The bed heater is finally here

tawny swallow
#

The sock is a little bit messed up so I'm remaking it. It stuck to the mold a little

#

I might just re-print the mold though because I scratched it up a bit trying to get the residuals out.

tawny swallow
#

Came out pretty good this time, though I'm gonna make a few extra for later

Gotta check

haughty basin
#

im thinking of getting one on my printer

#

im also probably gonna have to start working on the cad for AWD X bc if I upgrade my Y im gonna be X limited

tawny swallow
#

The heater was ~30 dollars and the cf bed assembly was $50

#

You'll have to be careful gluing the 2 bottom assemblies together or else it'll make a big mess

#

The heater was from provok3d and the assembly was from the fystec official store on aliexpress

#

Jb weld high heat works well, and it wipes off easy with alcohol pads.

#

The breakout board is in LA meaning it will probably be here in the next few days bulbasmile

tawny swallow
#

After about a month and a half of waiting, it's finally here

tawny swallow
#

Resuming sometime around june 8th

tawny swallow
#

A whole month late, but I'm gonna start once I get back from Idaho

Update: I'll start working on it eventually, I just don't have the motivation right now.

The gantry and y-axis motor mounts are now complete, I just have to print them out in their final materials

tawny swallow

Everything seems to fit together nicely in the mockup so far

tawny swallow
#

testing the y axis on one motor since i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get both working 🫠

ebon meadow
#

Are the rails oiled? Idk I think they are screaming for help

tawny swallow
#

they are oiled and are much quieter in real life

tawny swallow
#

looks like the reason awd y was not working was because of a dead y driver

#

same for the x as well

#

may have been caused by sitting in the garage for a year, but I'm not sure

faint scroll
tawny swallow
#

No problem

faint scroll
#

oh wait that's not connected to the Z block

#

huh interesting

#

how did you connect the gantry to the Z?

tawny swallow
#

there is a single m4 screw connected to the gantry extrusion with a t nut

#

you can see it better from this angle

faint scroll
#

oh

#

isn't that rather weak?

#

as in not rigid enough?

tawny swallow
#

it was actually suprisingly rigid even when i test printed it in pla

#

I'm going to be using cf asa for the final part though so I have yet to find out

faint scroll
#

interesting

tawny swallow
#

the part where the tensioner is located is held on with heat inserts and m3 screws since they are 2 different parts

faint scroll
#

Yeah figured that out....that also doesn't seem rigid enough lol

#

I wonder how they'll hold up at higher accels

tawny swallow
#

Yeah I'm not sure yet, most of the z axis has been in the works for a while since I've been trying to improve the y-axis motor mounts

faint scroll
#

why not use 9mm belts for the Y?

tawny swallow
#

that is the plan, just made the mistake of ordering 2 6mm belts instead of a 9 and a 6

#

the 6mm belt on the Y-axis is a placeholder

faint scroll
#

ah

tawny swallow
#

Currently the x axis only moves in one direction for some reason and I'm waiting for 4 tmc2240s to arrive since 2 are fried

tawny swallow
#

Also ordered a new octopus pro because I'm almost positive two of the slots are fried as well 😭

tawny swallow
#

Finishing up the rest of the ASA-CF parts, smells absolutely wicked

faint scroll
tawny swallow
#

If not I'll just use the ones that lh made

tawny swallow
#

Old board was definitely fried

#

New one is much better

tawny swallow
#

I need to move the rails and endstop forward for the Y axis but it's alive 🥳

tawny swallow
#

(Before cable management)

tawny swallow
#

Still working on pressure advance, but I'm working on cleaning up the wiring a bit more before then

quaint ocean
tawny swallow
#

It was actually caused by petg sticking too well, causing the kapton tape to peel every time I took a print off the plate feelssobman

#

Anyways, the wiring to the breakout board is now finished
