For a while now I've noticed you see many a RepRap, and many a Replicator, but where are the Cupcakes?
MakerBot only made a limited number of these - around three thousand, and there is a very small number of "Pirate CupCakes" - Cupcake-based machines heavily costcut and intended to be used as a RepStrap to print a Mendel.

Of these few machines, fewer still survive till today. I take issue with this, and wanna use my skills and access to equipment to build a new one.
While the resources to build one of these machines are spread amongst a million tiny archives, it /is/ out there. In this forum post, I plan to record relevent information and document what I do- Plus, considering there are varying versions of the machine, seek feedback on what specifically to focus on and build.

More to come, it's almost 2am as I type this.

Links and Resources Shit that may be useful and important!

Thingiverse used to have sub-models as part of a single larger model, support for this has since been removed. Thus it is necessery to refer to an an archive of the site for these sub-parts of the CupCake: https://web.archive.org/web/20120312100714/http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:457

so! good news and bad news

the bad news is i got reminded this was a project made in an imperial country.

Interestingly despite its age the makerbot uses GT2 belts and pulleys, this makes the motion components easy rk source

limpid jasper
#

God dammit.

#

I need to split the frame up into four seperate panels
It uses 4mm, not 3mm, so I need to order it myself rather than use what the space has in stock
these are £12.60/e from kitronix, £50 for four plus I need the acrylic too & a tenner shipping.

#

tfw the most expensive part of this isn't going to be making my own hotend, or building original electronics... it's the fuckin wood frame TwT

limpid jasper
#

Mayyybe I need to shoot E3D and some other 3DP shops some emails asking for help funding this in exchange for engraving their logos onto it

warm ivy
#

When you consider doing it all over, consider 6mm Alu dibond rather than wood for that Ultimakerish glow-up

#

or 4mm if you don't wanna redraw everything

limpid jasper
#

oooh that sounds silly, ill have to keep that in mind for when i make a second one to mod the hell outta x3

#

rn the goal is

  • Build one to BoM spec
  • Use what I learn from that, to build another one with mods and tinkering done to it
limpid jasper
limpid jasper
#

also of ancient note: i went and managed to find the original, not heavily compressed images of Kaz's Cupcake #2172; #3d-printing message
Not really much of note here, just interesting.
I was hoping there'd be a picture with a good angle of the DC extruder motor but there isnt sadly

#

I may actually have to pester a Cupcake owner to get the dimensions & specs on the thing, or just wing it and figure out from the lasercutting files x3

warm ivy
#

are you sure you want to build it with a brushless motor?

limpid jasper
#

Yeah! Mk4, absolute piece of shit.

#

I would do Mk3 buttt the files for that are missing

#

I'm planning to keep this as close to Batch 1 BoM I can, including the lasercut pulleys

warm ivy
#

Alright then (-;

limpid jasper
#

I crave pain I must have 8hrs MTBF

warm ivy
limpid jasper
#

If I build a second Cupcake I'll probally stick a Stepstruder in it and run the motor off a fourth motor driver board

limpid jasper

#

Aren’t those compatible?

limpid jasper
#

Hmn. Maybe? I'd need to CAD it

warm ivy
#

17T

limpid jasper

Yup. Makerbot were deranged, the Cupcake & Replicator use 17T instead of 16T or 20T

#

Was a real fucking headache figuring out why my rotation distance was Wrong when I klipperised ReBizer lmao

I could reuse ReBizers old 17Ts, but I want a set that's not the cheapest possible ones from a decade ago - Plus, nice complete BoM :>

limpid jasper

#

just realised that when my friend was making their bulk digikey order & got me the drivers, i forgot to send them the trimpot the board uses.
Aliex don't have it, and the UK ebay sellers want £5.60/e instead of the £1.47/e @ digikey ._.

limpid jasper

While i wait on my boards to ship, ive been filling in more of the BoM, looking at the pulleys

#

Referencing one blog, there seems to be two seperate styles of pulleys/idlers for the Z-Axis

#

We have seemingly five identical 36T pulleys - which have a brass insert?
Plus two smooth idlers- Made of lasercut wood on the Batch 1.

warm ivy
#

the center and left/right inserts are different?

limpid jasper
#

The issue Im seeing, looking at these, is welll
The shaft on the motor is going to be a fair bit smaller than the M8 threadded rods.

#

I can only find info about makerbot printing/lasering the idlers, so they must've been purchasing the pulleys. main issue is they dont specify any details beyond "Large 36T Pulley"

warm ivy
#

just get 8mm shaft steppers SMH

limpid jasper
#

the fuck lmao

eager vessel
limpid jasper
#

fucking hell

#

i think what I might do is just get 8mm Powge pulleys and then plug the gap between pulley & motor shaft with a printed spacer

eager vessel
limpid jasper
#

hmn. Iiiii assummeee the different size of powge pulleys just changes the ID, and nought else?

#

Probally best to just go w/ that

#

By the looks of things the Powge 36T pulleys do seem have a smaller diameter, so i'll probally need to swap the Z belt

I still find the absence of ends tops on later kits ridiculous

Request for Single Motor Order for Makerbot Cupcake Project

Dear Kysan Electronics,

I am working on building a brand-new Makerbot Cupcake 3D printer following the original BoM as closely as possible, this BoM specifies the use of a Kysan 1156006 (A37RE-12V2RPM) DC motor, which is priced at $15.50 on your site and makes mention of being "ideal" for this very task.

I understand your minimum order value is $100, but as this is a personal project, I’m hoping to place an order for just this one motor.
Would it be possible to accommodate this request?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,
Sophie

Yup, the result of wiring one up to an arduino running klipper and attempting to run a motor over the step/dir pins

unnnnfortunately something is ~funky~, I can get stepper_buzz blinkenlights but the motor doesnt actually get energised or move, and the one I had to bodge is entirely unresponsible
Dead & another friend are suggesting osilloscope em, but that'll have to wait until college next week

limpid jasper
#

Re-wired things, seems to be acting normal on the LEDs when stepper buzzing now?

Sam,

Would it be possible to request the use of a slower-but-cheaper shipping method rather than USPS Air?
I don't require this specific component for some time yet, and the current by-air shipping cost would make this component cost 1/4th of my entire project, which is unfortunately beyond the budget I've set aside for this.

If an alternative shipping method isn't possible, I have a US friend willing to accept delivery of the motor to send over to me later this year.
