#Ender 3 v2 - black screen after installing new thermistor and heat cartridge

Last night I installed a new thermistor and heat cartridge for my Ender 3 v2. Everything seemed okay at first boot, but the screen's rotary dial was unresponsive. I rebooted the printer with the power switch, and since then the screen has stayed black.

The printer appears to power on (My CR-Touch probe power cycles and has a red light on like usual. The extruder part cooling fan stays on), but the screen stays black.

I've tried installing stock Creality firmware - but the screen stays black. I successfully installed an update to the screen firmware and tried again - but still the screen stays black.

I also tried installing the most recent MRISCO firmware, which I usually run, and I'm still hitting a black screen.

Printer: Ender 3 v2
Mods: BIQU H2 extruder
Firmware: MRISCO latest firmware (or at least I want that)

AI Help

It sounds like you may have a hardware issue with your Ender 3 v2, possibly related to the display or motherboard. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check the connections between the display and the motherboard to ensure they are properly seated and secure.
  2. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the ribbon cable that connects the display to the motherboard.
  3. Test the display on another working 3D printer if possible to determine if the issue is with the display itself.
  4. Contact Creality's customer support for further assistance or consider contacting a professional technician for a more thorough diagnosis.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, it may be best to seek professional help to avoid causing further damage to your printer.

ok dumb question, did you look at the mother board for a loose connection? Did you take the knob off to see if it's rounded out wthrough wear and tear?

#

wait... i think the description changed on me

cosmic dagger
#

I didn't do that yet since I assumed it was a firmware issue... I can check that next time I have a chance.

signal herald
#

Is it just black all the time?

cosmic dagger
#

I edited to add some printer details - same issue, though.

#

It's black, but powered.

signal herald
#

Because bad firmware or not you should get lightup and a logo or something

#

that leads me to think power / connection issue

cosmic dagger
#

Like I can tell it has a backlight, but there's no logo or anything.

signal herald
#

so power but not data...

#

i'll see if i can find anything on it to help, I have the old Ender 5 pro its a little different

cosmic dagger
#

And when I did the screen firmware update, it successfully went form blue to orange.

Here are some ideas

#

i can't see the Thermister or Heat Cartridge damaging the Motherboard even if you got the power backwards, but who knows

cosmic dagger
#

Does the heater cartridge have a specific way it's supposed to be plugged in to the screw terminals? The sides weren't labeled and I assumed it was just voltage/ground.

#

Next time I have a chance, I'll confirm connections are all secure and I'll rename my firmware file to make sure it flashes.

#

Can the printer get bricked if it's powered off while firmware is attempting to be installed?

signal herald
#

well that can't be good for it at least, but the frimware installer should be in a uneditable CMOS style section of your motherboard, so i wouldn't think so

signal herald
#

There isn't enough voltage for it to work from the other terminals

#

Like nothing about replacing those 2 items should of affected your screen

#

ok a video i just watched said turning it off while updating can "brick it" which only damages the motherboard really

cosmic dagger
#

Ah, I watched his videos to remind myself about how to reflash firmware and heard him mention that (bricking it)

#

I'm not sure if I turned it off during a firmware update since the screen has just stayed black.

signal herald
#

well he did say after 1 min if it's still at a black screen you need to turn it off and reformat the card
I set it at the right point in the video of what he says to do

Hello, 3D Printing friends! Today we're going to update the firmware on a Creality Ender-3 V2! We'll see how to pick the right firmware file, download it, and install it.

I've made sure to reformat my card to fat32 and have tried a few different firmware files - so I'll check on the cables and try the stock firmware file again.

good luck! if not it's about $40ish for a new motherboard thats prob the "Worst" case scenario.

Thanks for your help!

I checked the connections and they all seem secure. I'll be trying reformatting the microsd NOT using quick format... but I'm losing hope.

#

The motherboard blue led is on, the power source green led is on as well. Everything seems like it should be OK... but I'm not getting luck.

#

Okay.... I think I figured it out?

#

I had plugged in a new filament runout sensor - and apparently that's what killed everything

#

Yup... apparently the printer will only turn on if the filament runout sensor has filament in it.
