#spongelike pores within walls of print - oh no

Hiya, posting here as I couldn't diagnose the issue within the FAQ, please tell me if this is actually a common issue!

I'm very new to this, using a relative's ender 3 (as far as I know)

I modelled a small container for a project I was doing, all walls are 1.5mm in thickness, and they seem to end up porous / gappy once the print's complete. I'm not sure if I might just not be aware of the limitations of the printer

I'm printing with PLA, nozzle heated to 220c with a bed heat of 50c. The layer height is set to 0.2

I've levelled the bed and double checked it, all seems good there.
I also seem to end up with a lot of strings of filament webbed inside the box - could that be related, or is that normal?

Happy to share files if that helps diagnose the issue.

Again, sorry if I've just missed something and this is obvious.

Thanks

It sounds like you may be experiencing issues with underextrusion, which can lead to porous/gappy walls and stringing. Here are some potential solutions:

  1. Increase extrusion multiplier: Adjusting the extrusion multiplier in your slicer settings may help to increase the amount of filament being extruded, resulting in stronger, more solid walls.

  2. Check for clogs or partial blockages: Make sure the nozzle is clean and free from any obstructions that may be hindering filament flow. A partial blockage could result in inconsistent extrusion.

  3. Calibrate your extruder: Ensure your extruder steps/mm are calibrated correctly to accurately push the right amount of filament through.

  4. Decrease printing speed: Slowing down the print speed can sometimes improve the quality of the print by giving the filament more time to properly adhere and bond.

As for the webbing/stringing inside the box, this could be caused by a few factors such as retraction settings, filament tem...

@warm magnetI see some issues everywhere

#

bad first layer (warping), uneven flow, and loss of flow

#

check your idler wheel tension on your extruder, your filament may be slipping. Check for nozzle partial blockage, clean your bed and check the bed temperature, might want to double check your z-offset to make sure that it is set right

Great, thats good info thanks

I was struggling to clean my nozzle after removing it, nothing I had was small enough to fit through the hole - is there a good-practice method for that?

there is some needles for that

#

look up for 0.4mm needles

Call me a cheap skate, I prefer budget minded. 🙂 I don't like throwing away anything that is still good. I had a few clogs learning how to change filaments, LW-PLA to PLA+, ABS to TPU and so on. The nozzles had at best, 1/4 to 1/2 a spool of filament run through them. I could not see throwing them away just because they were clogged. I found a small far with a seal. I put acetone about half full. I put the nozzles in there, swished it for a couple days. Put gloves on, used tweezers to pull one out, used the needle, had little bits left. Cleaned the nozzles, poured the used acetone into my chemical waste bottle. Poured fresh acetone in, let soak for a couple days. Clean as new. These were the budget minded brass nozzles, you can usually find a pack for less than $10.00usd.

Somethings may look similar, but have completely different fixes.

As stated above, there is more than one issue. I had a few prints that were less, but similar, Picture a print with no wall but only the infill, I increased the number of walls from 2 to 4 and it printed pretty well.

I have printed like that, forgot I set my flow rate to 50%. Talk about under extrusion on a massive scale.

I was using Geeetech PLA, I had to lower the temp to 195c nozzle, 45c for the bed. Have you tried a temp tower with your PLA?

Sorry for the old man rambling on.

So, I left it printing overnight with a couple changes... 0.1 layer height, different infill pattern, 30% infill density, much lower mm/s rates on all settings, 50% print speed and 190c nozzle

This was the result
