Should i lube up my Z axis rod and clean it? I got my 3d printer around late november of 2022 and haven’t cleaned it much since then, except for cleaning some filament off of my 3d printer that fell off due to missprints.

It's a good idea to periodically maintain and clean your 3D printer, including lubricating the Z-axis rod. Make sure to use a lubricant specifically designed for 3D printers to prevent any potential damage to the components. Cleaning the rod can help ensure smooth and consistent movement, which is essential for print quality. Just be sure to follow your printer's manufacturer's recommendations for maintenance to avoid any potential issues.

Lube for rails
While picking lube for linear rods or rails there are 2 main picks that work fine : grease or oil.

Greases are harder to apply, give higher movement resistance, but aren't as messy and don't require to be reapplied as often.
Oils provide lower movement resistance and can be applied even without taking the carriage/bearing off the rail/rod, although need to be reapplied fairly often and are more messy.

Grease selection: Lithium soap based grease, no particulates (so no PTFE, no molly etc), NLGI grade 0 to 2, optimally with EP additives.
Oil selection: Engine/automotive oil with SAE 30-40 viscosity should be fine. 10W30, 15W30, 10W40, as long as it's xxW30 or xxW40, it should be fine.

NOTE: Avoid using PTFE based lubricant. While many clueless youtubers recommend it with their referral links, it is meant for sliding contact, not rolling contact, it can wreck your bearings and rails.
