#CR-10 v1 issues

So recently I picked up a modded CR-10 from a friend with a known issue that I may need help with.

From what I was told, it will start a print pretty alright, but after some time it will get confused on the size of the printing plate and rescale the print completely midway (either larger or smaller). It has had a board replacement with a bigtreetech skr 1.4 turbo board, and has been reprogrammed multiple times but the issue still persists. Not quite sure whats causing it and still putting things together for some testing, but some pointers would definitely be appreciated.

(also has dual z, direct drive and bl touch that strangely doesnt want to work.)

It sounds like the issue could be related to the firmware settings or possibly the stepper motor drivers on the SKR 1.4 Turbo board. Here are some troubleshooting steps to consider:

  1. Check the steps/mm settings for the Z-axis stepper motors in the firmware. Make sure they are set correctly for your specific stepper motors and leadscrews.

  2. Verify that the Z-axis motors are moving correctly and not skipping steps during the print. You can do this by manually moving the Z-axis in small increments and observing if it moves accurately.

  3. Ensure that the Z-axis is properly calibrated and leveled. If the Z-axis isn't level, it can cause the print to scale unpredictably.

  4. Check the wiring for the BLTouch and make sure it is connected correctly to the SKR 1.4 Turbo board. Ensure that the BLTouch is properly configured in the firmware.

  5. Consider re-flashing the firmware with the latest version, ensuring that all settings are correctly configured for your specific setup.

Hmm, interesting. A second hand printer with an uncertain past.

#

Firstly, what firmware are you running?

#

I feel it may be misconfigured/compiled firmware, paired with a crap-ton of layershifting due to bad belt tension, or V wheel tension.

What do you mean rescale the print? I know that if the z rods are binding which is common with bad dual z installations it’ll make prints look short sometimes

@daring rivetJust in case you lost where this chat is.

id have to shoot them a text to see about the firmware, and maybe see if they have any pics of some failed prints for reference. Im mostly going off of their word rn as i just brought it home with me, and it came very tangled so ive mostly just been rearranging cords to make it more neat.

#

if needed i can send any pics you may need? sorta my first time going through this stuff

We'd need an example of it 'rescaling'.

alrighty, ill see what i can do 👍

found what firmware its running

got the printer running for the most part

Marlin is to be expected. Where'd your friend get it from? Did they compile it themselves or did they find it somewhere?

daring rivet
#

they bought the printer stock from creality and compiled/modded it themselves, along with the help of another friend

So they probably messed up the firmware.

huh, good to know then

#

thank you a lot btw!!

I'm no pro at compiling firmware. I run Klipper on everything, personally.

daring rivet
#

so, do i just need to install new firmware then?

#

then just program the upgrades in im guessing?

It's that simple when you word it like that, yes.

#

But compiling Marlin to add all the new features is not so straight forward.

#

Going to Klipper has it's own complexities, but imo is easier.

get all mechanical stuff sorted first, make sure stuff moves smooth, does not bind or slip.

The resizing you describe sounds like a software only issue. For me it feels like your friend had a post processing script past x layer on the slicer. Hence why no hardware replacement ever fixed the issue

#

I won't touch the firmware unless necessary.
