#Filament not extruding, but easy to push? - nozzle removal

I removed my nozzle to fix clog filament, its out now. I can push my filament through super easily, but when i move the extruder motor axis, it wont push it. I have an ender 3 pro with PLA filament. (there is no nozzle just to prove its not pushing)

Printer: ender 3 pro
Nozzle: 0.4 (not added)
Filament: PLA
Temperature: 230C
Filament type: generic

It sounds like the issue may be related to the extruder stepper motor not engaging properly. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check the extruder gear: Make sure that the gear on the extruder motor is clean and free from any obstructions. Sometimes small pieces of filament can get stuck in the gear teeth, preventing it from gripping the filament properly.

  2. Check the filament path: Ensure that the filament path from the spool to the extruder is free from any tangles or obstructions. Make sure the filament is correctly inserted into the extruder assembly.

  3. Check the extruder tension: Double-check the tension on the extruder arm that applies pressure to the filament. If it is too loose, it may not be gripping the filament properly.

  4. Check the extruder motor wiring: Make sure the wires connecting the extruder motor to the main board are securely connected and not damaged.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be worth reaching out to the manufactu...

  1. already checked, its fine
  2. its fine
  3. dont know how, maybe someone can tell me?
  4. its fine

Check and make sure the tensioner arm isn't cracked as that's a fairly common failure. Also if you have an old toothbrush or something clean the hobbed gear teeth. Certainly seems like it's not engaging and or has insufficient pressure

Remember, I'm shit at terms vaulthah

dark anchor
#

It's the arm that pivots on the left most screw in the thumbnail for the video and has the spring applying pressure on it

#

Basically responsible for pushing that smooth bearing into the filament and causing the hobbed (brass) gear to bite into it

dark anchor
#

If there's insufficient pressure there for whatever reason then the hobbed gear cannot move the material with any meaningful force

mint mauve
#

Oh shit.. you're right

#

It's just broken off

Those extruders are kinda shit unfortunately. I'd order a bmg clone if you're on a budget. They're not 100% drop in but require you to change the steps per mm (because they have a gear box instead of just directly having the hobbed gear on the motor shaft)

#

They do make metal drop in replacements but they're kinda shit so I'd avoid them personally

#

But they do work just the metal is pot metal and they're not particularly durable and they don't address any other inadequacies of the extruder design

I'm gonna buy a qidi q1 pro very soon, most likely the next 2 days

#

I don't rly want to spend money on fixing this when I'll just have a new one soon

There's some printable designs like "saintflint" iirc

mint mauve

either way, this is killing my power (flickering lights) even though its on 115V

mint mauve
#

actually i can look it up rq

dark anchor
#

I can't remember if that one will work with stock hobbed gear but it's mostly printable just requires bowden tube

mint mauve
#

it goes on the nozzle part

dark anchor
#

Well you probably can't fit it at the stock location but the filament goes through the tube and loops around 180° so the hobbed gear can grip it twice if that makes sense

#

But... What i don't know is if it works with the stock gear because iirc it recommended a different hobbed gear

I'm sure there's printable replacements besides that but that's one I used

dark anchor
#

"Printable extruder ender 3" i suppose

#

There's probably printable replacement arms too but i dunno how well they'll hold up

#

A clone bmg is like 15 bucks though

Yeah but 3d prints aren't as strong as injection molded parts generally speaking and it's a small part so a printed one may work and will probably work for a time but will likely fail eventually. Just hard to say if that'll last a print or maybe 50 prints

The cad is available though so you could try to print it. Making food right now but i can find the part after

dark anchor

Anytime i do print something like that I print at least 2

mint mauve
dark anchor
#

1 for now 1 for when it fails, and the first print after it fails and you replace it is 2 more replacements

#

They the bearing goes on the arm part, the printed part there is the base/housing

mint mauve
#

im gonna change my name to 'i dont understand anything' lmao

Knowing what you don't know is something not to be taken for granted around here...

mint mauve
#

i know some people get bothered by it

dark anchor
#

They're wrong then... Rule 2 is be excellent

mint mauve
dark anchor
#

They don't have to answer or even read your message so getting bothered by it really isn't acceptable

mint mauve
#

I think it's useless for the issue

mint mauve
# mint mauve

its not the actual idler bearing part, its the fact it wont stay in place anymore i guess

mint mauve
#

ill print saintflint while i wait for you

thanks for the help fanatical, found the piece i needed
