#Extruder motor not working

When trying to extrude, my extruder motor "clicks" once and then becomes unresponsive until I power cycle the printer. After turning the machine off and on again, this same thing repeats.

The issue started when one of the wires on the motor's JST connector snapped. I don't have the equipment needed for JST-PH, so I just soldered the broken wire directly onto the pin. However, after doing this "fix", the aforementioned issue appeared.

I have verified the pin and connection several times, and haven't found a solution so far.

Printer: Kingroon KP3S Pro
Motor in question: Nema17 "pancake", apparently

It is possible that the issue lies in the soldered connection on the JST pin. Double-check that the solder joint is secure and not causing any shorts. Additionally, make sure that the wire is making proper contact with the pin and is not loose or touching any other conductive surfaces.

If the issue persists, it would be best to replace the JST connector with a proper one to ensure a reliable connection and prevent any potential damage to the motor or other components. You may need to seek out the appropriate tools or assistance to properly install a new JST connector.

As always, practice caution when working with electronics to avoid any injury or damage to your printer.

Jst connector seems fine, I don't see any short between the pins. The issue persists

fallen rapids
# short coyote

As it came from the factory (and has been working until now), only 4 pins are used so I think the 2nd pins on both sides don't matter

short coyote
#

And the both in the middle are connected by the solder bead?

fallen rapids
#

Oh that's a bad pic, sorry, here's a better one

#

I noticed the bearing on the back seems to come off its slot when trying to turn the motor.. When I place it back in the small hole, the motor spins just slightly one time and the bearing slides towards the shaft, after which the "one click" behavior continues

The bearing? Yes

small island
#

Or does it do the clicking when not connected too

fallen rapids
#

In can rotate the stepper freely by hand when assembled

small island
fallen rapids
#

Yeah, it does the "one click" after which it becomes unresponsive until a power cycle

small island
fallen rapids
#

yeah

small island
#

Or rather, when did it start doing the clicky stuff

#

Like after a mod or something?

fallen rapids
small island
#

Oh... hmmm

#

Ngl, I'd probably just get a new stepper, those ones are pretty cheap

#

One thing you can do, is using an led or a multimeter, rotate the stepper, and read whether it produces current

fallen rapids
#

Which pins would I connect the led / multimeter to?

#

Two of the same coil, I assume

#

LED lights up successfully

#

A new motor is €18 / $19,5 locally. Not too bad I guess, if I don't get this working today I guess I don't have any other options

small island
fallen rapids
#

Yup, locally, meaning I could grab it tomorrow, that is.

small island
#

Ah sure

fallen rapids
#

By the way, is the bearing supposed to be touching the.. larger object?

small island
#

One thing to make sure is that the center 2 wires are swapped

fallen rapids
small island
#

Or just buy a cable, it's a lot cheaper than a stepper

fallen rapids
#

Don't have a stepper cable, but I guess just regular wire could work, too

small island
#

And is it touching the 5th pin?

#

I think 2 and 5 should be unused

fallen rapids
#

It's 4 pin, two of the six pins are unused

#

Yeah

small island
#

But could your solder be shorting on the 5th pin

#

Idk what that would do. But probably not a good thing

fallen rapids
#

It's not shorting on the header where I have done the sholdering, but may indeed be bridging inside the motor (as seen in #1226892385666207885 message ). However, as that's how it has always been, I find it unlikely that could cause issues now

small island
#

One thing to try

#

Use one of the cables from a different axis

#

To make sure that your stepper isn't dead

fallen rapids
#

That's a good idea, not sure how I didn't think of that

small island
#

Lol

#

If so, then you just need a new cable for like 2 dollars

fallen rapids
#

It indeed works flawlessly when I tried it with the X axis cable, lol

#

I'll double and triple check the order the X axis's wires are in

#

Hmm, order shoukd be exactly the same on the cables. Maybe the extruder motor's cable is just faulty somehow. Or the pancake motor has different wire order than the other "regular" motors, no idea.

#

ig it's also possible the issue is on the printer's mainboard (extruder motor driver, possibly) but I'll probably just buy a new cable and hope it fixes it

small island
#

It's a bit different current probably but it should still tell you if it's working

fallen rapids
small island
#

Yea get a new cable, I had a very similar issue

#

How is your stepper mounted to your print head?

#

And does the cable bend and run into the z upright when it's in the home position

fallen rapids
#

After some "temporary" mods I made, there was indeed basically zero strain relief at the hotend, causing this and several other issues

#

This was the final alarm that I really should implement some kind of strain relief lol

small island
#

Can you just rotate the stepper so the cable faces up?

#

And can't actually press against anything

fallen rapids
#

It faces up but can still move and bend somewhat

small island
#

Ah

fallen rapids
#

After some continuity testing with a multimeter, I identified one of the extruder motor cable's wires to have no continuity (with 99% certainty, I may be a little tired but double- and triple-checked it, lol).
Thank you for all the help that led to this conclusion. Will see if the I can find a replacement cable, and if not, I may end up having to buy an entirely new motor, anyway. Hoping to get the printer running again tomorrow.
