#Z-axis line skipping/merging issue

Update to my last, unresolved post. TLDR I need to know what hardware piece is causing this so I can fix it.

Original Ender 3, Capricorn tube upgrade and metal extruder assembly (brand new, the plastic one having cracked). I've attempted to print numerous things since fixing a huge clog and the extruder, and all of them produce these very visible, tactile lines after a certain point in the z-axis. A few normal lines seem to be skipped around the weird ones, leading me to believe it's failing to move the z-axis up for a few layers. I also think this weird offset is caused by the same issue - this is the highest piece I've tried thus far and it seems like it won't go higher than this (I'm not even halfway up the printer's print area, so it's not that). Any help/advice/things to try or check is appreciated.

Based on the information you provided, it is possible that the issue with the visible lines and the z-axis not moving properly could be related to the Z-axis stepper motor or the Z-axis leadscrew. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check the tightness of the Z-axis coupler that connects the leadscrew to the stepper motor. Make sure it is secured properly and not slipping.

  2. Ensure that the Z-axis leadscrew is properly aligned and lubricated. If it is binding or not moving smoothly, it could cause issues with the z-axis movement.

  3. Check the wiring connections for the Z-axis stepper motor to ensure they are properly connected and not loose. A loose connection can cause intermittent movement or skipping steps.

  4. Verify that the Z-axis stepper motor is functioning correctly. You can do this by swapping it with another motor, such as the X or Y-axis, and seeing if the problem persists. If the issue follows the motor, then it may need to be replaced.

Based on the image you've provided and the description of the issue, it looks like the 3D print is experiencing layer shifting and inconsistent layer adhesion especially at a certain point in the Z-axis. This could be due to a few possible hardware issues:

  1. Z-Axis Binding: The Z-axis screw may be dirty, bent or improperly aligned, causing the print head to have trouble moving smoothly up the Z-axis. Clean the Z-axis screw and ensure that it is properly lubricated. Also, check if it's properly aligned and straight.

  2. Loose or Damaged Z-Axis Coupler: The coupler that connects the Z-axis stepper motor to the lead screw may be loose or worn, which could cause slipping during prints. Ensure that this coupler is tight and in good condition.

  3. Incorrect Stepper Motor Current Settings: If the stepper motor driver for the Z-axis is not providing enough current, the motor may skip steps. Check the current settings on your printer's firmware or the stepper motor driver to ensure they’re set correctly for the Z-axis motor.

  4. Electrical Issues: There could be intermittent electrical issues with the wiring or connections related to the Z-axis stepper motor. Inspect all wiring and connections for any signs of damage, loose connections, or wear.

  5. Z-Axis Endstop Issue: If there's a problem with the Z-axis endstop (sensor telling the printer when it reaches the home position on the

@deft tapir I can't really help but I'm also facing the same issue with high prints, except that mine is causing those weird lines only about an inch up 😭 here's what mine looks like.

What's weird is that the cylindrical bar's weird lines happened close to the lower layer, which is where I printed my supports, and that the calibration cube's weird lines were also near some supports I accidentally printed with. maybe it's the supports causing the issue
