#Coming back to my Ender 3
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I'd be happy to help you with leveling the bed of your Ender 3 and setting up Blender and Cura for modeling and slicing. Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Leveling the bed of your Ender 3:
- Make sure your printer is turned on and preheated.
- Move the nozzle close to each corner of the bed using the control panel or jog controls.
- Place a piece of paper on the bed and adjust the bed height (using the bed leveling knobs) until you can feel a slight resistance when moving the paper between the nozzle and the bed.
- Repeat this process for all corners, ensuring the bed is evenly leveled.
- Setting up Blender for modeling:
- Download and install the latest version of Blender from the official website.
- Open Blender and familiarize yourself with the user interface and basic controls.
- You can find various tutorials and resources online to learn how to model objects in Blender.
- Setting up Cura for slicing:
- Download and install the latest version of Cura from the official websit...
ok. so lets start at the begining! please can i get a picture or two of the current state of your printer
yay nobs great - and yeah you may wanna hoover it off a bit later
ok so lets begin with that filament
Yeah, ik it has to be removed
power on the system, and navigate to your menu on the lcd -
menu - prepare - preheat pla
Done
once it goes nice and toasty (it might stink prepare yourself) use the release lever to push a bit of filament out the nozzle then yank the filament out
Wait select this
I'm assuming that one heats up both
I'll take the silence as a yes
This is the lever ig
Huh?
ah nvm sorry
ok - your machine is a differnt colour lever to what im used too lmao so i didnt reconise it
yes the part with the spring is the lever
you should be able to push a little bit- then pull out
Oh I didn't push it farther in first, I just pulled and it all came out
It had a little stringy bit at the end kinda like how hot glue does
Oh no
oof not great but we can work with it
yay perfect! thats what we want to see
Wait rly-
yep indicates your extruder may not be clogged
now remove the booger from the extruder, and then we will begin tramming your bed - then leveling it
how old is the roll - and where was it stored
Uhmm
not the place - but like dry? dusty/ damp etc
About as old as the printer (3 years), and it was stored here
It's dusty just from not touching it, it was sitting on a desk
honestly id send it off for recycling
You're kidding me
however for this what we can do. is pull off about 2 meters.
cut it clean at both ends then run it through a cloth a few times to clean it off
yep - filament not stored in a sealed bag/ box for a long period of time is going to cuase you nothing but problems
What's that in feet
Well shit
Yes
I googled it, it's about 6.5 feet
ok good - you can replace it for like 10-20 usd so its not a major loss tbh
4 feet will do
its only to have some for a test
That's definitely a major loss! 20$ is a lot of money, my mom'll not be happy about this
in that case we will look at ways to salvage it.
but dust is a MAJOR issue to run through your printer, so avoid it where possible
Yeah I don't have a job, a credit card, or money for that matter
What about large sandwich bags
if the roll can fit - that will work perfect as tbh thats what a roll bag is
i know what ya ment - like freezer ziplok bags
That's the one!
Ok, so cut off about 4 feet?
yeah - its a bit overkill but it will do the benchy
Also remember we haven't leveled it yet
i knowxD
Lmao
im running through the easy stuff before i get busy and have delays in answering
That's alright, I'm very patient
I don't have a ruler so I'll use my little brother
now. What i would LIKE to do, is send you a link to the instalation guide and leveling instructions. and have you contact me if it doesnt work/ you struggle - as this will help you learn.
if however you would prefer to just be talked through the procedure i can do that
He's about 4 feet tall
I'd probably prefer instructions, but lemme do one watchthrough of the video this server is linked to, and see if it makes sense
okies ill send the link now too - and ofc just @ me if you need anything at all
im here to help
So, I think I understand, but I'm confused about if the paper should have some resistance when I try and move it
ok0 so lower the head till you CANT move the paper
then move back up one notch (usualy .02) till it moves but there is some resistance
you want to feel like it moves, but being rough is gonna rip it
Gotcha, I'm in the first corner rn
perfect!
From what I understood, I put it in the center, and lowered the Z axis to 0, then tried to move it, and it moved but it was hard to, then I raised it, moved to a corner, and lowered it back to 0, the I'm raising/lowering the corner of the bed for the right amount of resistance between the paper and nozzle
@wary basin?
no, ignore the center for now
That's just what the guy in the tutorial said
But I'm right about keeping the nozzle at the lowest it'll go, then raising/lowering the corner to see how the paper feels
so move to a corner.
move to touch, and record it. set the offset back to zero - raise the head 1mm on z - move to next corner, move to touch, and then either lower or raise to the first measurement you wrote down - repeat for all corners.
I:E
2 - - - 3

1 - - - 4
1 = -1.32
move to 2, ( set off set to 0, move with Y to 2 - lower and adjust to 1.32)
move to 3 ( set off set to 0, move with X to 3 - lower and adjust to 1.32)
move to 4 ( ( set off set to 0, move with Y to 4 - lower and adjust to 1.32)
I personaly dont like ym offfset lower than -1.5 so if it is i usualy raise that first corner up to around 1.5
One problem...
W A T
lol ok
so after yo9u check the corner 1 (bottom left) and write down the offset you got with the paper
Wait idk what the offset is
set the offset back to 0 - then go check the corner bottom right or top left (your choice) but if bottom right DO NOT MOVE THE Y. if Top left DO NOT MOVE THE X
I'm just turning a nob
oooooh so it is setting it to 0?
oooh ok even easier
(havent worked on a Ender 3 before)
ok ok
My brain is melting as we speak
While you give directions is it alright if I go eat real quick
I'll take my phone with me tho
so move to a corner.
move to touch, then to next corners
I:E
2 - - - 3

1 - - - 4
move to 2, ( raise Z 1mm move with Y to 2)
move to 3 (raise Z 1mm, move with X to 3)
move to 4 ( (raise Z 1mm, move with Y to 4)
take your time its all good
Wdym by "move to touch"?
as in move the nob till the paper is touching
Gotcha
just remember to always lower the head back to zero after you raise it to move
So I WAS doing it right!
Right right
But my main confusion was how much resistance there should be
so you want the paper to move freely, but it feels tight. like pushing a door with a silicone seal on it-
Okie dokie
Whilst I'm eating lunch, I'll go ahead and let you know that I've downloaded blender and cura already
I've never used blender before, but I HAVE used cura (I don't remember anything tho)
Okayyy???
The reason I was gonna use Cura...
So basically, my grandparents have this neighbor across the street who had a 3D printer, and that's what he said to use, he also said to use fusion 360 for modeling and stuff
ok so cura is fine, but pretty basic. fusion 360 is fantastic but your gonna need a ton of tutorials as its a full cadcam program
blender works great and is what i mostly use, and can also be used for other things - but if your gonna be making parts or mechanical items f360 is gonna be better. or solvespace
A full what?
Gotcha
cadcam - computer aided design computer aided manufacturing
Ah
its a little duanting but there are alot of good tutorials and its a fantastic skill to have if you want to get into engineering or that side of design
For now I think I'll just use what I have installed
well im gonna be telling you to install orca slicer regardless of if youl use cura lmao
as it will be the final steps of setting up your printer
aight, imma install it then
While it's installing, Imma finish leveling
perfect. once you have trammed the bed- we can run the first test
Done
@wary basin for the first test, are we by any chance printing a cube?
that file is what you load into the slicer your planning to constantly use
resize it to your bed if its a bit too big, then print it
How
Actually idk how to use this lol
I uninstalled cura, and installed orca
Isn't that rather thin? Couldn't we do like, cubes, or short cubes?
its ment to be thin xD
I'm just afraid it'll be hard to remove lol
now print it
Does that help
use a scraper for that
Idk how lol
its a level test, so they are super thin to test first layer
Gotcha
ok hit the slice button at the top right
Could I make it a bit smaller, I'm afraid it's gonna touch these clips on the sides
yeah you can use the resize icon to shrink it
click one of the green squares to select it. then up in the top bar there is a resize option
click the top right corner and drag in
it will resize and position it for you
Done
cool print that and see how it goes
or call it for the day and pick up tomorrow if its late for you - I myself will be going to bed soon
I started it, but had to quickly abort because I never put the filament back in 🤦♂️
Also how do I put the filament back in
thats a good question, let me see
thats a product of debate. some people like ti pointy
i prefer it straight. but for now lets cut it again at an angle to make it a point
K
then turn on preheat pla again
and then push the filament in and keep pushing it till a bit comes out of the nozzle
and its loaded
It keeps coming out of the nozzle
Yeah filament is slowly coming out
I think I fixed it tho
Ok NOW there's another problem
I pressed auto home, now the Z axis says -1, and it's this low!!!!
Did I accidentally press something?
Cuz when I pressed auto home it was so low it started moving again the side of the bed! I was absolutely terrified watching it I thought it was gonna break
I seem to ruin everything 😣
Wait, did I accidentally press "set home offsets"
@wary basin I think I'll quit for today, if you need to tell me anything DM it to me, and I'll look at it tomorrow
I've been doing this for 6 hours...
Kill me
@wary basin Mornin
Oops I missed that ping, my apologies
that's alright, alot happened yesterday, including a hospital visit
oh no, I do hope your ok*
ok so the last I saw the home is under the bed correct?
yes, im not sure how that happened!?!?
ok go to your console
control - bed leveling - z offset - set that to zero
then home all axis
That isn't there
O.o
try in motion
Wait wait wait wait wait
It no longer lets Z go below 0
And it's right here
WAT
WAAAAT
home all axis 5 times, and write down where the z is each time please
I went up by like, ten millimeters, and when I went back to zero it's here now
I'll try
Ok, I did it once, it started going so low the cube that the nozzle is attached to started pushing the bed a little
Ok, it did the same thing again, but when it started touching the bed, it went up on it's own and slowly lowered until it was perfectly flat with the bed (the cube thing)
Hang on lemme get a picture
Also, I've looked back in settings and the only thing about offsetting is "set home offsets"
ok turn one corner knob a full turn. 1 at a time till you compress the bed under the nuzzle height. then do the same number of turns on the other corners
ok, before that have a look at the set home offsets
Press it?
yep see what happens
interesting. go to the main screen and see what it syas the nozzle height is
At the bottom of the info screen it says "offsets applied"
They all just say 0, I think they always have 😐
ok manualy raise the z up +1
till its slightly above the board
then presse the set home offsets again
then run the leveling procedure again
Level it again?!
😫
@wary basin Hey, after I do the offset for the Z axis, it lets me go below zero. Wouldn't it make more sense to lower it as far as possible, set that to be zero, then lower the whole bed until it's level for that?
@wary basin?
yes and no - before we lower the bed its just a trouble shooting exorcise first
as you dont really want to over tension the springs
Ah yeah that makes sense
Alright, I'll get to it 👍
cool! im clocking off for the night - let me know how it goes and ill get back to you in the morning
Okie dokie, later
Btw tomorrow's Monday so I'll have school
@wary basin You busy?
cooking but i can respond, how did the lowering go?
Perfect, but whenever I press auto home it still ends up below the bed
even after lowering the bed? ok let me look into that
ok sweet. your switch is indeed t nuts not hold positioned
hard*
ok we have a simple solution to this
Wait wdym by lowering?
its ok i figured out the issue ❤️
Ooookie dokie
tighten your bed knobs up till the springs are halfway compressed
raise the z manualy, then move it till the extruder is center Y and X
after that, lower it till the paper test as usual in the center
once all thats done.
loosed then allen bolts on the switch on the left Z gantry and raise it up till it clicks. then tighten it up - and then re level your bed
Is that halfway?
yep looks good
Huh? I just lowered the bed farther, and re-leved it, and now everything's working lol
I'm pretty sure I fixed it lmao
Oh wait this?
Ok now I get it
All it needed was a little 'Merican ingenuity 🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅💥💥🦅💥🇺🇸
Yep
Lmao
Sometimes raising that up can fix most of it
Goodluck
🫡
It's heating...
It's lifted up 50mm...
Still heating...
IT'S GOING
AHHHHH
This may take a minute so Imma go watch Star Wars
@wary basin Ok it's done
OK, what did you print?
The squares 😐
Yeah
And is that filament wet??
Lemme try again ig 😑
Wait
Nah it's all hardened
What temp did you print it at?
It was done a couple minutes ago
I pressed print and it heated on its own
.... what's the settings in the slicer?
All I remember was that it was above 200
... OK reload the stl, set it to print at 180
Bed at 55
Also check your retraction distance and your flow rate
Bruh how do I clean this lol
The booger hanging from the nozzle is connected to the bottom right square
The what?
It just popped off the nozzle
You never told me ti change any settings besides making it a bit smaller so it'll fit
@wary basin dude this is a complete disaster
Lmao
How do I clean this gunk off the bed
I did not realise you did not know how to set your filament I. A slicer
You should have a scraper, to carefully remove it
Lol
I know nothing 🤣
It's hard, do I need to warm it so it's easier to remove?
Nah you want it hard to "pop" off easier
Do you have a pei plate? A magnetic flexible sheet on there?
It's too small to "pop", it's stuck
It's attached with some clips
Then youl need to carefully scrape it with a wallpaper scraper
Ah it's most likely a glass plate then
It feels like cheap plastic
Listen
Yeah it ain't comin off
The other side of this feels like a really smooth plastic tho
@wary basin this is the same thing that happened when I first started with the printer 4 years ago, I printed something and it left a horrible residue on the bed cover
It might be the "glass" one, but the top part is really crappy
I'm somewhat concerned by the filament tbh, the fact is was hanging out like that from the nozzle, and how badly it was not retracting
It very much seems like that filament needs recycling and replacing asap
Could that have caused it to look like this
I'm really pissed tbh
It's been almost a week and there's still problems
I'm starting to want to give up
Don't give up, these are very common issues and part of the hobby, as you fix issues others may appear, but the end result is a machine working that you can have genuine pride in knowing you got working.
So we are going to start from the beginning here
First you need to clean that bed off. Use a wallpaper scraper or something you can scrape with (a car ice scraper can work) and be gentle with tour bed
Once the bed is clean, we can look at the basic settings we are going to print your level test with
Yeah, it came with a scraper, but because it's so thin and so stuck to the bed it's almost impossible to remove
Yep it's gonna be a pain. Youl have to work slowly and carefully, it may take a few hours to get it clean
