Ender 5 S1 with Sonic Pad and Klipper, with Prusa Slicer

I've been up and down trying to fix this branching issue following this guide. But I'm already up to 2mm retraction distance, 120 mm/s retraction speed, with a 0 mm in minimum retraction distance, and with dry filament. This is my 5th print of this particular model and they all look the same.

Additionally, I'm printing on the low end of the temperature for this filament, Esun PLA+, at 200°C.

AI Help

It seems like you are experiencing stringing issues with your Ender 5 S1. Here are a few suggestions you can try to reduce or eliminate the problem:

  1. Check your retraction settings: While you mentioned you have already increased the retraction distance to 2mm and the retraction speed to 120 mm/s, it's worth double-checking if these settings are actually being applied in your slicer (Prusa Slicer). Make sure the retraction settings are enabled and correctly set within the slicer's configuration.

  2. Retraction minimum distance: You mentioned your minimum retraction distance is set to 0 mm. Try increasing it to around 1-2 mm. A minimum retraction distance of 0 mm can sometimes lead to oozing and stringing, especially with certain combinations of filaments and hotend setups.

  3. Temperature adjustment: While you mentioned you are printing within the recommended temperature range for Esun PLA+ (200°C), filament characteristics can vary, and you might need to fine-tune the temperature...

Just use this.

feral mango
ivory cloud
#

Make sure to use the print temp you'd like to use.

#

Also, is your heatbreak a bimetal, all metal, or PTFE lined?

feral mango
#

Ah, yes, I've used this before. But the gcode maker doesn't take into account other factors for my slicer of choice.

feral mango
#

The hot end is stock for a Ender 5 S1, it's a spider.

feral mango
#

Spiders are direct drive with a little bit of PTFE.

ivory cloud
#

hmm ok.

#

Don't push the temp past 230C

feral mango
#

I'm printing on the cooler end of my filament to try to combat the stringing.

ivory cloud
#

Here's what I'll say

#

Just try the retraction tower without nozzle wipe.

#

You can try to factor in the nozzle wipe later.

#

Because what good would a nozzle wipe be if even with that it's still string mania

I'll try it out. Wish me luck!

feral mango
#

Or, hardly any. Just whisps.

#

Went with a 2 mm distance all at 30mm/s retract speed.

#

All the way up to 1 mm distance at 30mm/s retract speed at the top.

ivory cloud
#

Now try your model again

#

Have travels be fairly quick though because oozing will happen with bowden setups

feral mango
#

It's a direct drive though.

#

That's the thing, I tried it with these values and got the same stringing.

#

So whatever g-code teaching tech is running or slicing with is better than what I have, but I'm not sure how to get there.

And here's a better suggestion.

#

To save filament, scale down the print.

feral mango
#

Can't scale, it is a part that goes to other part. But I'll try without wipe and see what happens.

Having little wisps of strings isn't bad, you can easily get rid of them with a lighter.

However, I'd try the guide sheet that came with the printer. I follow it and don't have stringing issues.

ivory cloud
#

And what slicer are you using?

#

I think you said Prusa Slicer.

#

nvm

#

Found it

#

Ok so... Retraction of 2mm...

#

Did removing nozzle wipe help at all?

feral mango
#

Currently at work, I'll follow up with results after!

vocal cape
#

Retraction of 2mm is way too high.

#

Have you tried drying your filament too?

#

I print straight from my dryer box

feral mango
#

Yup. Dry as a bone, otherwise the other calibration print would also be bad.

ivory cloud
#

For bowden that's nothing

#

maybe for direct drive

#

no idea about it though

vocal cape
#

Direct drive is short retractions. Bowden is longer.

vocal cape
#

For example, on my Ender 5 S1, I do 0.8mm, on my Ender 3 V2 I do 6mm.

Can confirm, ender 3 is about 6 mm for me (with a little bit of extra prime).
