Ender 3 with sprite extruder and bltouch, using cura as slicing software but problem persists even when using prusa slicer, probably mechanical, belt tension in x and y are both good, have made sure that there are no loose screws on any moving or movement related components. The defects are not just visual, they are physical and you can feel them with fingers.

AI Help
Based on the information you provided, it seems like you have already checked some common mechanical issues that can affect print quality. Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try:
-
Check the nozzle: Make sure it is clean and not clogged. A partially blocked nozzle can cause irregular extrusion or under-extrusion.
-
Filament quality: Ensure that your filament is not tangled or worn out. Poor quality filament can cause inconsistent extrusion.
-
Calibration: Make sure your printer is properly calibrated, including the bed leveling. A misaligned bed or incorrect Z-offset can lead to issues with print adhesion and extrusion.
-
Print temperature: Experiment with adjusting the print temperature to find the sweet spot for your filament. Too low or too high temperatures can cause issues with extrusion.
-
Flow rate: Check if the extrusion multiplier or flow rate setting in your slicer is correctly calibrated. Adjusting this value can help fine-tune your extrusio...

I typed a whole load of stuff out then realised that the pattern is perfectly even, ie the over extrusions are perfectly spaced apart.
It's almost like your extruder sprocket isn't central on the spindle, but I'd expect the pattern to be more spaced out than that.
Do you get the same results on a calibration cube, or something with faces aligned to the X or y axis?
What printing speeds and acceleration are you using?
Definitely not a slicing problem, this is mechanical. There is a vibration or wobble in some part of your setup that's causing this.

Yes the pattern is consistent on all axes and prints, here are my speed settings.
acceleration is all constant at 500 mms^2

I'd perhaps check your extruders e-steps, check your extruder gear doesn't wobble as it rotates.
I've got the feeling this might not be it, but I'm not sure what else it could be.
If its consistent pattern like this no matter the axis, then it feels like it's an extrusion issue, but in your case it's a fairly fine pattern.
You could try another slicer though I don't think that's the cause either.
You're getting this on straight lines as well? As in aligned with an axis (such as a calibration cube)?

Yes
It’s on all surfaces
I do believe it’s a problem with the extruder
I might reassemble it
It’s not esteps they are calibrated
The stock 424.9 works basically perfect
It most looks like the pattern you get from regular over then under extrusion, which suggests uneven feed rate.
That's usually caused by a non-central feed gear but I'd expect it to be much further apart than it is.

I disassembled the extruder and the gears looked fine, I’m doing an input shaper test for marlin with a ringing tower to see if that might help
