#Ender 3 Filament Extrusion Issue

Hi there! I am very new to 3D printing but after having my printer for almost a week (the original ender 3) I am absolutely hooked.
I have been learning how to model in autodesk fusion 360 and smaller less complicated stuff in thinkercad as its more intuitive for me at the moment.

Currently the issue is that after a certain Z height it seems like the extruder has issues pumping out pla, I can negate this by shoving it in a little more and hoping that works but I cant be looking at it print 24/7.

I have an extruder coming, a dual gear one but I would like to fix this as much as possible till then as I still would like to prototype.

What I have tried is tightening the gear, literally rewrapping the pla roll to try to stop tangling, I have configured the steps properly & even reduced the retraction distance yet still the same result every single print without fail.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying 3D printing! It's not uncommon to face some issues, especially as a beginner. From your description, it seems like you are experiencing extrusion issues at a certain Z height. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Check the nozzle: Make sure the nozzle is clean and free from any blockages. Sometimes a small piece of filament can get stuck and prevent proper extrusion. Heat up the nozzle and use a needle or print cleaning filament to clear any clogs.

  2. Verify the hot end temperature: Different layers may require different temperatures. Ensure that you are using the correct temperature for the specific filament you are printing with. Experimenting with a slightly higher temperature can also help with extrusion issues.

  3. Adjust the printing speed: Reducing the printing speed can sometimes help with extrusion problems. You can try reducing the overall print speed or specifically slow down the speed for layers that are cau...

i thought it was 5 higher

but alright

is 6.5 retraction fine

idk but if that is the default for your slicer then its fine

its 5 normally

Speed could be a factor.

I'm speaking from my experience with my Ender 2 (same hotend and extruder I believe). I haven't been doing this long enough to know if this is universal, but I'll share what I've learned in case it helps you!

The hotend on the ender 3 (and my printer) has a somewhat limited flowrate. Depending on the fillament you're using, you might have to lower speeds pretty significantly to prevent any jamming. I've found that even just fillament color can play a big role.

(for example, my Elegoo black PLA causes grinding and jamming on my printer with speeds higher than 30mm/s, but I can easily push 100mm/s with the Elegoo white PLA I bought from the same listing)

Lower layer heights and smaller nozzle sizes seem to make it worse, too. I guess it makes sense since it's restricting the nozzle more that way.

#

I upgraded to a BMG style dual gear, and it's helped a ton. But I still have to limit the speed with some fillaments or else I have adhesion issues, or the extruder might even just tear the fillament apart, haha.
