Swapped my A8 clone over to MKS Robin Nano V3.1. Got most things working I think, just got a bit of over extrusion even after calibrating the extruder stepper. Also when carrying out a print the Z axis does not raise, Z works in manual mode and rehomes.

Could do with someone looking over my config files to see if they can find an issues or things I’ve missed or set incorrectly as I have no doubt I have!

Running Marlin and using CTC A8 clone chassis

It sounds like you've made progress in swapping your printer to the MKS Robin Nano V3.1. Overextrusion can have multiple causes, even after calibrating the extruder stepper. Here are a few potential solutions to try:

  1. Verify that your filament diameter is correctly set in the slicer software. Using an incorrect diameter can lead to overextrusion.
  2. Check your flow rate in the slicer as well. Adjusting it can help compensate for any excess filament being pushed through.
  3. Ensure that the nozzle is not clogged. Clean it thoroughly if necessary.
  4. Double-check the extruder steps per unit value in the firmware. An incorrect value can cause overextrusion.
  5. Make sure your hotend is properly calibrated for temperature. A too-hot hotend can result in filament being melted too quickly and causing overextrusion.

Regarding the Z-axis issue, it may be related to incorrect firmware settings or an issue with the wiring. Check the following:

  1. Verify that the Z-axis movement commands ar...

@fringe sky maybe post the machine settings and start gcode from cura here

#

also for fixing overextrusion go over

extrusion multiplier here

fringe sky
#

Sorted the extrusion now I think...

#

Will add the rest thanks mate

#

Start G-Code

#

G21 ; set units to millimeters
G90 ; use absolute positioning
M82 ; absolute extrusion mode
M104 S{material_print_temperature_layer_0} ; set extruder temp
M140 S{material_bed_temperature_layer_0} ; set bed temp
M190 S{material_bed_temperature_layer_0} ; wait for bed temp
M109 S{material_print_temperature_layer_0} ; wait for extruder temp
G28 W ; home all without mesh bed level
G80 ; mesh bed leveling
G92 E0.0 ; reset extruder distance position
G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; go outside print area
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; intro line
G1 X100.0 E21.5 F1000.0 ; intro line
G92 E0.0 ; reset extruder distance position

#

End G-Code

#

M104 S0 ; turn off extruder
M140 S0 ; turn off heatbed
M107 ; turn off fan
G1 X0 Y210; home X axis and push Y forward
M84 ; disable motors

oblique frost
#

where did you get this start code?

fringe sky
#

Cura machine settings

oblique frost
#
M104 S{material_print_temperature_layer_0}
M190 S{material_bed_temperature_layer_0}
G28; Home all axes
G1 Z10.0 F3000 ; Move Z Axis up little to prevent scratching of Heat Bed
G1 X0.1 Y20 Z0.3 F5000.0 ; Move to start position
M109 S{material_print_temperature_layer_0}
G1 X0.1 Y200.0 Z0.3 F1500.0 E15 ; Draw the first line
G1 X0.4 Y200.0 Z0.3 F5000.0 ; Move to side a little
G1 X0.4 Y20 Z0.3 F1500.0 E30 ; Draw the second line
G92 E0 ; Reset Extruder
G1 Z2.0 F3000 ; Move Z Axis up little to prevent scratching of Heat Bed
G1 X5 Y20 Z0.3 F5000.0 ; Move over to prevent blob squish```
#

try this as start code

#
G1 E-2 F2700 ;Retract a bit
G1 E-2 Z0.2 F2400 ;Retract and raise Z
G1 X5 Y5 F3000 ;Wipe out
G1 Z10 ;Raise Z more
G90 ;Absolute positioning

G1 X0 Y{machine_depth} ;Present print
M106 S0 ;Turn-off fan
M104 S0 ;Turn-off hotend
M140 S0 ;Turn-off bed

M84 X Y E ;Disable all steppers but Z```
#

and this as end

fringe sky
#

Will give it a go and let you know...

oblique frost
#

I think it was a really outdated profile you got

#

G80

#

see the bot won't even respond

fringe sky
#

So it worked with the old board but no good for the new one most likely

fringe sky
#

Same issue mate, I think I may have messed up a line in the firmware... is there anything specific for Z axis during print?

oblique frost
#

if you go into motion settings and check steps what do you see at Z-steps?

#

but no idk what it could be

#

probably the marlin discord is a better place to ask

fringe sky
#

Tried there got no answer... will try again if I have a specific question to ask i guess

oblique frost
#

can't really tell you a whole lot from this

#

when you manually raise Z like 10 mm does it move up 10 mm?

#

by manually I mean on the lcd

fringe sky
#

Yeah did the calibration and all is good

oblique frost
#

if you run something like this does it move?

#

it's literally just

#

absolute positioning

#

homing

#

go middle y middle x z10

#

go z20

#

go back to 10

#

feedrate should be firmware default but you can slow it down

fringe sky
#

Will have a look

#

Yes that did all that ok

oblique frost
#

huh so it is the slicer afterall

#

just add a new custom printer, set the gcode, set the bed size and test that

#

don't forget to set extruder settings to 0.4 nozzle and 1.75 filament too

fringe sky
#

ok 👍🏼

oblique frost
#

idk why it does that

#

the machine settings look ok

#

wait a min

fringe sky
#

Custom FFF?

oblique frost
#

untick apply extruder offsets to gcode

#

maybe?

#

also send a file you've sliced

#

pull the gcode in

fringe sky
oblique frost
#

the gcode

#

the one you've sliced already

fringe sky
#

Ok give me a min as I deleted the machine on Cura to put the custom one on

#

Ok

oblique frost
#

this looks fine tbh

#

Z layers move up fine

fringe sky
#

Which line shows the Z moving up?

oblique frost
#

just the Z codes

#

Z0.3, Z0.45, Z0.6

fringe sky
#

I can only see X Y E?

oblique frost
#

ctrl + f it

fringe sky
#

Ahh can see it now

#

Going to try this new file....

#

Back in 5

#

Same 😦

oblique frost
#

I'll be honest I'm out of ideas

fringe sky
#

I've put a post over on Marlin as well so hopefully someone will pick it up there, thanks for all your help mate

#

...... maybe spotted something.......

#

// Travel limits (mm) after homing, corresponding to endstop positions.
#define X_MIN_POS 0
#define Y_MIN_POS -4
#define Z_MIN_POS 2
#define X_MAX_POS 212
#define Y_MAX_POS 212.5
#if ENABLED(TALLBEAR)
#define Z_MAX_POS 320
#else
#define Z_MAX_POS 210
#endif

#

Z min pos is set to 2 after homing... so it can't get close for the first layer?

oblique frost
#

sounds like it

#

your endstop position is 0

fringe sky
#

Just changed it, let's see....

oblique frost
#

why would it be set to 2 to begin with? thonk

fringe sky
#

Who knows??? I got this off another A8 clone build

oblique frost
#

ah

#

yeah that happens when you copy stuff

#

unfortunately everyones setup is different

fringe sky
#

I've spent the last 3 days finding things....

oblique frost
#

but explains why it's moving correctly when you do it through lcd and stuck during print

fringe sky
#

hope so

oblique frost
#

oh btw the steps are calculated

#

not calibrated

fringe sky
#

What i menat lol

#

I think thats got it!!!

oblique frost
#

oh ok I'm operating on no sleep and it just occurred to me you said you calibrated it

#

so bear with me

oblique frost
#

nice

fringe sky
#

YES!

oblique frost
#

it may be wise to reread the config and check everything else as well but for now gl and happy printing

fringe sky
#

Thanks for helping mate
