What Hardware will you need for klipper?

#

Any linux machine can run klipper, infact, some people even connect their printers to old laptops and use that. But nowadays the majority of people will run an SBC (Single Board Computer) for klipper. Notable examples include:
Raspberry pi 4b+ (My pick for ease of use)
Raspberry pi 3b+
Raspberry pi 0 w (May not be able to run certain features)
Raspberry pi 0 2w (Small form factor and feature packed)
Orangepi 3 LTS (My budget pick)
Orangepi 0

#

And this computer will interface with your printer mainboard and send it “simplified” instructions, in simple terms. You will need to connect to the printer mainboard over usb, serial or serial over gpio.

#

Why should you run klipper?

#

Klipper can be useful for old 8 bit boards, especially on delta printers due to their limited processing capacity. As the gcode is processed on the secondary computer.

#

Another reason is input shaper, this is a technology that allows you to run higher accelerations with less ringing, although this does have some drawbacks, many people have switched to klipper for this reason. But it is also important to note that later versions of marlin do have implementation for this.

#

Another reason is pressure advance, it works similar to marlin’s linear advance but uses a slightly different algorithm to determine and compensate for the pressure built up in the nozzle. This can be used to reduce bulging on corners and make for more crisp geometry

#

The last reason and my favourite is the incredible webuis. I personally use mainsail but many of the features of mainsail are also in fluidd. My favourite thing about having a webui is being able to upload firmware from your computer! This makes it incredibly easy to tweak settings on your printer’s configuration file.

#

Mainsail vs Fluidd

#

Mainsail and fluidd are both web interfaces for klipper.
This is the web end that you use to controll your printer from and upload gcode files.

#

Although they do have some differences in features, its really preference on which one you like.

What apps will you need to install klipper

#

You can use either putty of windows command prompt as a terminal for ssh ing into your linux computer. But in addition to this you will need raspberry pi imager (Only if your using a raspberry pi) and balena etcher (if your using an arm linux computer) You will also need winSCP to browse files on the pi

Getting started

#

Take your 32gb microsd card out and format it to the fat32 file format. Also be sure that your linux computer is plugged into ethernet for first setup (this makes it much easier to set up wifi later). Make sure your linux computer is receiving sufficient power at the correct voltage as power instability may cause disconnects and unstable wifi (especially on raspberry pi’s)

Using raspberry pi imager

#
  1. Open the imager
#
  1. select mainsail os 64 bit
#
  1. chose sd card you use
#
  1. open settings
#

**5) **
Set your hostname

#

6)
Enable ssh, using password authentication

#

**7) **
Set your username and password

#

**8) **
configure wifi (optional)

#

9)
Click save

#

10)
Click write

#

11)
Click yes (data on the card will be erased) and wait

#

12)
make sure your pi is plugged into 5v constant power source

#

**13) **
once the sd card has been burned, insert it into the raspberry pi

#

14)
if you have done everything correctly, the act light should flash green

#

**15) **
wait for about 5 minutes (Or untill the green light stops flashing) and mainsail should be flashed!

.

#

16)
Now if you type in your hostname into your browser, you should be greeted with mainsail's ui

#

18)
Now, copy paste the contents of the printer.cfg file you got in step 16 into the new file you have created

#

19)
Now, click save and restart

#

20)
Before proceeding further, i reccomend clicking update all components in klipper update manager (found on the same settings tab as before)
