I've had my E3D hemera direct drive for months now and it used to be able to print with TPU fine. Recently it has been failing every tpu print and I haven't changed any of my settings. Today after a 28 hour PLA print, I switched to this TPU for a print and not even half way through the first layer the filament stopped extruding. I wasn't able to pull the filament out so I assumed it had gotten clogged, but when I opened it up everything was clean and the filament fell right out. This image is what the end of the filament looked like. Any ideas on how I could fix this? Feel free to ask about my settings and printer setup.

AI Help
Based on the image you provided, it appears that the TPU filament may have been ground or flattened out by the extruder's gear teeth. This might explain why it stopped extruding. To address this, try the following steps:
-
Increase the tension of the extruder gear by turning the tension adjustment screw slightly clockwise. This will help to grip the filament more firmly and prevent the gear from slipping.
-
Ensure that the filament path is clear of any obstructions or debris that could obstruct the flow of plastic.
-
Adjust the printing speed and temperature settings. TPU requires lower speeds and temperatures compared to other filaments like PLA.
-
Check the filament spool for any tangles or knots that could be causing tension on the filament.
After making these adjustments, try printing again with a fresh spool of TPU and monitor the print closely for any issues. Hope this helps!

is that a capricorn reverse bowden?
Reverse bowden will screw with TPU retracts
it is a reverse bowden and im using the stock tube that came with the ender 5
oh thats good to know. Do you thing I should reduce my retraction distance?
I think you might want to remove the tube entirely
Retract just doesn't work well when the filament isn't rigid.
I will try that. I'm looking into these capricorn tubes, do you think its worth buying one if I expect to do a lot of TPU printing?
I'd only consider it worth it for normal Bowden
Perhaps an oversize ptfe tube could work
I found one that looks good for only $10 so I will probably buy it. I'll also look into my retraction settings and maybe try increasing the gear tension like the bot said. Thanks for the help!
