Sorry this is my first time using discord, I'm using a translation program to communicate
If you are having a problem with the keyboard not being detected to begin the restore process, there can be a few reasons provided below. Here are the more common problems and some workarounds.
-
If you are using the web version of Wootility, try using the downloaded version of Wootility and see if that resolves the problem. Link
-
If you are using a USB hub or a KVM, please try plugging the keyboard directly into the motherboard or the back of the computer.
-
If you are Useing a third party USB C cable please attempt to use the stock cable
-
The computer itself may be the problem attempting a restore on another computer might resolve the problem.
=========
For reference, I have also included the restore process below.
- Unplug the keyboard.
- Hold down the two keys for your model (Refer to the image).
- Plug the keyboard back in.
- Let go of the keys after 3-4 seconds.
- Go to Wootility.
- Settings.
- Troubleshooting.
- Select your Device.
- Select your layout.
- Restore.
Included Video Guide
Please open the Win device manager (devmgmt.msc). Then change its view to container and provide a screenshot of that window so all main nodes can be seen.
This will tell us if and how the system detected the device.
The system detected the device as "Wooting Restore", meaning you should be able to perform the restoring.
So the question what exactly you are doing.
This is the welcome page, this only detects the Wooting in the normal mode. You need to skip that and go to the settings menu.
Yeah this looks right.
I guess the flashing went through but the device is still registered as Wooting restore, right?
Please try the desktop Wootility. That will create a log file which may gives a hint what is going wrong.
ok
In the settings menu there is a button on the bottom left where the device info is shown. This should open the folder for the error log.
Please post the error log here.
Wootility v4.6.11 (Web)
OS: Windows
Device: None connected
Doesn't matter, try the restoring with the local app and provide the error log.
Just now it suddenly recognized my keyboard and started auto typing randomly, I clicked reset and after it showed that it was done the keyboard didn't show anything again
The device info will only be shown if the Wootility was able to detect a Wooting in the normal mode, which seems not the case for you.
For you the Wooting seems to stuck in the restore mode. That mode is a failsafe in the case there is an issue to recover the device.
This mode is also used for updating the firmware.
Ok, that give me a hint.
So as mentioned the restore mode is to update the device. There are only a few reasons why the device can be in that mode.
- The Wootility has sent a command to put the device into restore mode when you are updating the firmware.
- During start the device detected an issue, like if a previous update failed.
- The keyboard thinks the two keys to enter the restore mode manually are beeing pressed.
So if the Wooting was now working while having phantom inputs it likely means that the keyboard thinks the two keys to enter the restore mode are pressed for a reason. This can be the case when there is strong EMI.
So is the keyboard now working and what keys are pressed even without you pressing them?
The keyboard is now unresponsive, though it did have issues with auto-typing and misaligned lights earlier on
Misaligned lights? What do you mean? In the case the profile is toggled (the color of the keys changes) or the brightness it means the keyboard likely thinks the function key (Fn) is pressed.
This is one key to enter the restore mode during a connection. So it would explain why the Wooting sometimes stays in the restore mode if the backslash key also has phantom inputs.
It means that all keys except the number keys are blue, wasd is purple and nothing happens when you press it.
By the way, the log don't show something weird. So I belive you may have EMI issues.
What causes EMI issues?
Can you test the Wooting on a different system? But please don't bring another device with you. Like any electric device may causes EMI issues and if so we don't know which.
Like a laptop or even a smartphone can cause these.
There was no other equipment to test with, but I tried to hold other electronics away from it
EMI can be caused by any electric device which is not properly designed or is faulty. Like a device should be shielded and don't sent electric waves out.
Otherwise a magnetic field from a magnet can cause issues.
Like you should not put the Wooting close and especially not directly above a magnet or electric device.
Like it can be that there are issues if you place the Wooting on top of a laptop. Some desks have magnets in them, which can also cause issue.
Do you have a laptop, smartphone or tablet?
I have a smartphone and a tablet.
The Wooting should work on a smartphone (Android) or tablet (any). It may don't work on an iPhone but as far as I know it should work on an iPad.
Can you please go in another room and connect the Wooting to the tablet and / or the smartphone.
To check if it's working then.
If it does it would be a good start and help a lot.
Please don't bring both device with you. Just one...
How do I connect my keyboard to my tablet? Do I use a double ttypc cable?
Not that the smartphone is causing the EMI issues, or the tablet.
Yes, you can use a Type-C to Type-C cable.
As long as the LEDs went on it would be fine.
I just went to another room and tried connecting to the keyboard with the tablet, still nothing, the tablet just recognizes the usb device
In the case the LEDs went on in the other room it would confirm that there are EMI issues.
Then you can use this to scan for the EMI. Like you can walk into the room with the Wooting still attach to the mobile device. Then you can come closer to your normal place. Have a lock if phantom inputs occur. The closer you come to the EMI source the worse the inputs should be.
Carrying only a keyboard and a tablet without any other electronic devices.
Did the Wooting work on the mobile device or not?
didnt worked
So the LEDs are off, right?
rigght
Have you tested the smartphone and the tabled?
Yes I tried the tablet.
And the smartphone?
I'm going to try again right now.
When you test please put all other electric devices far away. Like when you test the tabled please let the smartphone in the other room and vice versa.
I went to another room without any electronics and tested the smartphone and tablet separately, and neither of the led lights came on
For some reason only people in Asia seems to have this issues. I believe due to the less strict regulations the chance of EMI issues is much more likely than in Europe.
From the data so far it seems you have EMI issues and the question is what device is causing this. If you are unlucky it can be that there are multiple device causing this.
Hmm, it can be that both the smartphone and the tabled are causing this.
How do you normally connect the Wooting? Like do you have a PC?
If it's really an emi issue that caused this, is there any chance of fixing it?
I usually use wooting on my desktop computer.
I can't say for sure right now. Because you mentioned that the keyboard was working shortly and that there were phantom input I do believe EMI is the most likely.
It can be that the multiplexer is damaged. But this should be very unlikely.
The problem first appeared as an automatic input, and then the keyboard became completely unresponsive
Normally if the multiplexer fails it's just dead and not causing phantom inputs.
The keyboard was sitting normally on the table when the problem first started, and when I used it the problem occurred
No settings have been made
Not a setting, have you bought something new or change the position of something?
I added a new monitor to my desk.
Hmm, can you power on the PC (so that is working), then unplug the monitor (so that has no power) and then connect the Wooting to the PC.
I'll give it a try.Just give me a minute, please.
By the way, what smartphone and tabled do you own?
I would like to make notes. Maybe the Wooting didn't worked on them because it's not supported there.
I use samsung s20 and samsung tablet s7ultra
I've just connected the keyboard without the monitor being powered up and still nothing happens
Hmm...
The smartphone and tablet should work.
If the issue is EMI related you would habe the same problem with a new / replacement.
Can you bring the Wooting to a friend or a familiy member and test it on their computer?
I have not much ideas left to check or to rule out EMI.
I can take it to a friend's house for testing, but I might not be available these days.
I guess you already talked to the customer support about the issue. So you should be fine if it takes a few days for cross checking if it's working on a completely different system somewhere else.
Can we rule out anything else?
What should I do if I can't get it to work on other computers?
Not sure if it's worth it. But I can imagine that covering the right side of the Wooting in aluminium foil and to let that touch the case of the PC can maybe help if it'S caused by EMI. So you still can see the left side if the LEDs came on.
By wrapping the right side with aluminium foil you would shield that side if the foil is connected to ground.
So that should block EMI for that side and so the keyboard should no longer think that the two keys are pressed to enter the restore mode.
I don't have any aluminium foil around at the moment but I can buy some later and try it out
But it's a shot in the dark and would kind of look silly.
☹️
So the Wooting should work on the Samsung smartphone. It's working on my S20 FE. I would assume that this brand is designed to not have EMI issues. So if the device is not working on your friends or family PC we can assume the device has a hardware issue.
If it's working when wrapped in aluminium foil while the foil is touching the PC case we can assume it's indeed caused by EMI.
But you would need to connect the device after the Wooting is wrapped in the foil and that should touch the PC case all the time.
So I'll take a trip to a friend's house one day with foil and a keyboard and try it out.
You can do the foil thing at your home.
But now that the keyboard doesn't work on the samsung s20 is it a little more likely that there is a problem with the keyboard hardware
Yes, but overall not much.
So all I have to do now is 1- try it with aluminium foil 2- take the keyboard to a friend's house and try it, right?
Normally other device should only cause EMI issues when these are close. I know about a case where a laptop was causing it two meters away which is a lot. Assuming it is caused by EMI it maybe can be something strong and so maybe also happen in another room.
So yes, it can be that this is not EMI related at all.
I see.
The PCBA of the device is coated to protect it from water. So moisture or water should not damage the multiplexer to cause this issue due to corrosion. So that the component fails should be rare, even more rare that it's a partial failure.
So when everything has been checked do I need to mail the keyboard back to you?
To me, no....
You should contact the Wooting support and ask for either a refund or replacement.
If you leave the house the next time you can take the Wooting with you. When you are a bit away from your home you can try to connect the Wooting again to the smartphone to check if then the LEDs went on.
But the USB Type-C to Type-C cable you tried does support USB 2.0 data, right? It's not just a charging cable, or?
Yes I've used this cable to import video from my computer to my tablet.
@radiant abyss Any update?
