not like we wanted to bash u but it seemed odd to have backspace above enter on ansi

or was it a wooting

and all ur keys are backspace

There is no physical fucking board - I am talking about theoretical boards here. 😄

I am literally digging through decade old backups from a Mac disk that has been used on several machines.

Now THAT I can answer

yeah, steels only light up the Æ and Ø on these kaps tho

that's kinda my only real complaint about the caps though, feels nice to type on and rather like the look

Neat. Time to convert it to USB

I've got an old Apple keyboard from... 89? Still have to get around to giving it a clean and convert it to USB.

This is a pre-release prototype from Apple's danish office. My uncle and coworkers used it to translate all of the Mac software manually. Hence four binders of disks.

This year is the first time I used Mac, all windows before that. Since intel 486 I guess

junior ore

#

i've never owned an apple computer in any modern time. it's only been school usage or wanting to collect retro stuff.

reef patrol
#

Haven't had time to take it part. All I know is that it still runs - gotta make sure no caps are leaking or anything. It's going to a museum.

junior ore
#

careful then : the analog components are finnicky with those models.

vocal cipher
junior ore
#

the cap on the backside of the monitor can be adjusted but it's not exactly tightly fitted, so during movement it could wobble. so if you open it make sure it's sitting there tight at least.

#

the analog board will be sitting sideways flushed against the case : thats the thing that commonly has the most malfuctions.

reef patrol

My other Classic. This one is dead, so I've been gutting it and putting in a Raspberry Pi (This pic was just to check size and volume). Got an iPad LCD and an adaptor so it has new life... whenever I get the last 3D printed parts done and get it assembled again.

mild dome
#

Late response, but

  1. Pulling the plug on Stadia would indeed matter for internal use, as that means they nolonger have a server to playtest stream from. If you meant they are streaming the game from an internal server that isn't Stadia then wouldn't they most likely be using Windows on their own devices to more easily replicate bugs (or to avoid Linux based bugs).
  2. Big reason they have it on Stadia IS the money. Google was throwing around a lot of cash at the start of their ill fated venture. Without the monetary injection Bungie would never have touched the platform. If they had an internal report saying Linux was worth supporting they would've made the move years ago, but when it comes down to it most players who use Linux are also fine (at least willing) to dual boot Windows to play D2, which means it's kinda worthless for the devs to make a native Linux port. This is the power of the Network effect, it requires outside influence (like payment, or free cost) for people to adopt things outside the mainstream compatibility
frozen ingot
#

that ain't a thiccboi

#

this is a thiccboi

ashen spindle
#

yes I meant internal server for easier game streaming to test, and I never said the money is not a factor, just that anti cheat is a major reason as to why its not on linux despite the game working on proton for a while

reef patrol
# frozen ingot this is a thiccboi

It is THICC compared to modern iMacs. And unlike those you can actually service mine with just... three screws. Total access. But yes - The fishtank is much deeper for sure.

I am reminded when I sold one of those huge aluminium PowerPC Mac Desktops (G5 I think they called it) to some guy, and when he picked it up he told me about how his son was going to use it for gaming 😬 This was done in 2016

Gotta feel sorry for the kid not only buying the Apple Hype, but going for a unit so painfully obsolete that no one remembers it

ashen spindle

why would it

Because it's just like you've plugged in any other controller

ashen spindle

does playing on controller trigger anti cheat

frozen ingot

more probable that the rapid trigger/dual movement would tbh

crimson wigeon

Then it's not analog... ?

then analog doesnt do anything

how do you get aim assist by having analog control of your movement?

frozen ingot

also that

besides DRM online games with asshole developers that'll ban you, what would you want on windows that can't run on linux?

that doesn't make sense. if the game doesn't have aim assist, it doesn't have aim assist even if you have something analog.

Potatochop

junior ore
#

you can get a lot of stuff meant to only run on windows to run on linux.

because they didn't want to for reason of their choice, or laziness. or they don't knwo how to. but that doesn't mean it can't run on linux eitherway

#

don't ask me, ask the people that made the software not supporting it.

likely it's because it's done using various microsofts codes released officially for windows. but that stuff too can run on linux as well when someone else pokes at it.

.netframework stuff

I now have two hard drives heading my way. I need a third one, but I need an additional one. The only one I can currently get at a reasonable price is a X300 Pro (Toshiba). As such, I need to ask: anyone have any experience with Toshiba in general? I don't recall ever seeing one in any computers I've salvaged.

astral haven
#

Toshiba drives at the low end were the worst of the worst
But their best drives were reasonably useable
Nowdays they don't exist any more and I don't think anyone willingly buys them

slow garnet
#

mage wait hold on, you're telling me they don't exist anymore, yet they produce 20TB drives? Who's making them then?

#

Scratch that, 18TB I mean. But still, who's making them then? As far as I can tell it's not a situation like WD and HGST...

astral haven
#

Toshiba drives that are helium based are the only thing remaining

#

All the other drives are rebrands

#

also in what universe is an x300 cheaper than an exos

slow garnet
#

Well that's annoying. The other options are all NAS drives.

astral haven
#

exos?

slow garnet
#

Not sure why it's cheaper, but it just is. Exos don't fit the budget nor the capacity required (too low if budget is lower)

#

I mean hell explain to me why brand new 6TB WD Blacks were $50.

#

I don't understand the logic there, but it's legit, so fuck knows.

#

Alternative options are (non pro) ironwolves or a wd red plus. Other than that, nothing which would fit into budget.

#

Eh, I'll decide tomorrow. Eitherway the guy who is selling them has plenty of them in stock as far as I know, so one day will likely do fuck all.

#

And before you ask, no, said guy isn't available online, and isn't willing to go online, so sorry lul

i really hpe u change ur monitor distance at some point

#

unless bexin got a 48inch screen With 1440p

#

but id assume its normal sized

#

so pixel density is high enough that at the optimal distance you shouldnt see pixels as pixels

shadow minnow
#

27”, but I sit less than 70cm away from the monitor

#

I think with 1440p image should stop being sharp at around 75cm with 27”

#

I mean 1440p isn’t bad, way better than 1080p but I can still see the image not being sharp for me

fair gull
#

no? 27inch is around 90cm

#

resolution has almost no influence on distance

reef patrol
fair gull
#

its screensize and thus how much area it takes up in your field of view

#

usually 80 to 100cm

#

ya i was right

reef patrol
#

Don't know about you but last I checked I can definitely tell pixels a lot easier if I'm up close. And having a higher density helps there. So can't agree with that.

fair gull
#

so u also sit a good 10-20cm too close

#

or what u wanna tell me

#

this is like me saying ah 4k sucks on my 60inch... im sitting 40cm away and can still see pixels

Don't you know Tony - Sitting closer means more of my view is filled.

the american school system must have really failed if it got this far

shadow minnow
#

Every human being related isn’t just a bible thing, many scientists seem to think so too.
And well it’s very likely that at least almost every human would be somehow related

fair gull
#

very unlikely that only 1 male and 1 female ape evolved and we decended from those 2

shadow minnow
#

It’s not about that, there were probably more

fair gull
#

and its very unlikely we are all related beyond genetic similarities due to being human

frozen ingot
shadow minnow
#

However over so many years even if you had 100 of them that humans evolved from, it’s statistically very likely that at some point these have mixed over the time

#

Well statistics disagree

#

Very isolated humans may have a very small chance but otherwise

fair gull
#

at some point youre not related anymore because ure genetically so different that you just dont share any similarities considered related

junior ore
#

Everyone does look different. No ones a clone of each other unless born twins and even then their brain is different.

#

As to why the organs and stuff is the same : evolution. And those bits are changing over time.

shadow minnow
junior ore

But we are all are related in the sense of sharing common ancestry

#

Yes

shadow minnow

One of many sources that well say that humans prosbbly are all related
https://ed.ted.com/best_of_web/qRqRiz5q

TED-Ed

Basic math tells us that all humans share ancestors, but it’s amazing how recently those shared ancestors lived. Thanks to genetic data in the 21st century, scientists are discovering that we really are all descended from one mother. It’s Okay To Be Smart explores our common human ancestry.

junior ore
#

Evolution is a species-wide thing, not individual

junior ore

We share common ancestry with animals too

Scrolling up, i don't think they were implying any of that. @fair gull

#

In fact i dont see anyone actually disagreeing avoit evolution

#

We were earlier.

#

Prior it was all, like, defining the word bro and slang

#

That was weird

fair gull
#

ya and then i said i dont wanna be related in any way to them and they started saying were all related

junior ore
#

Well, its a relative term (bazinga)

fair gull
#

at some point its not really being related

#

ure genetically so distant that theres no real relation

junior ore
#

Aye

#

Theres a large distance generation wise, hopefully

#

But we are all related, distant or not.

#

I cant recall how much distance is required

fair gull
#

at some point id not call it related anymore

junior ore
#

Again its a relative term. It depend on the range of scope. On the family side : yes its far from related.
On the genetics side : related

i'll def read that

still stupid though.

Regardless in terms of gaming, you have a chip that is 1.5x the die size of a 6400/6500xt and still underperforms the former while consuming more power.
Of course they may have allocated more to their media decoding portion but still it shows

stark bobcat
#

hmm I wonder what they will price this at in the west if it s above the 6400 it s not a viable purchase

thick elk

Even at the same ore slightly below it will it offer poor value for gaming.
It really would need to undercut it quite a bit

Does it?

stark bobcat

look at the review and make up your own mind

I would not buy this over any of the other options around 150€

It is still viable for a completely new budget build at that price or a htpc where it's main use is its media engine

stark bobcat
#

there are cheaper display adapters

astral haven

Its the best media engine available
To the point where it might make sense to add to a system with a serious gaming gpu

#

Just for quicksync

#

Now for an Nvidia system? Not so much

junior ore
thick elk
#

Also my € 150 was in the assumption that the cheapest 6400 was still 180, now that I looked closer and saw one at € 160 that changes things for gaming

stark bobcat
#

what is the price in china for this?

#

anyone know

thick elk
#

chinese pricing is kind of weird as far as I know, not always something you can compare 1 to 1

junior ore
#

hmmm.... there should be options like, 100-150 dollar cards. like. honestly not everyone is well off but, like. sometimes people also want a budget set up or not even care about modern AAA games that sap so much hardware.

#

modern low-ends are justified.

astral haven
#

And if Intel releases it above 120 in the us I would be shocked

junior ore
#

though they should be small and not consume too much power*

and be cheap*

astral haven
stark bobcat

they would be making a loss at that pricepoint most likely I am gussing

astral haven

Not a chance

stark bobcat

thick elk

stark bobcat

junior ore
#

if they really thought they wouldn't be making a profit from this campaign : they wouldn't go with it.

astral haven
# astral haven Dice

Even if this was true, if you think this card costs more than $100 to make you are better off actually using dice to guess the price

junior ore
#

the only one with those thoughts are the underlings who do the heavy work. but the people running the show believe it'll be a profit and thats what matters.

stark bobcat
#

in the long run yes

#

but not immediately

thick elk
#

resizable bar is no big deal imo, moving forward cpu's generally support it. It only comes in to play parnering it with older systems.

astral haven
#

In the short term they need to be cash flow positive for hardware and thats it
The rnd will pay for itself in the future

thick elk
#

The thing is if their next generation of gpu's will not bring in profits or at least put them closer to it that will be more important.
Of course they expect to be making money of their gpu's, just not immidiately with their first entry in the market.

junior ore
#

aye, regardless fi it profitable : intel can bunk any negatives from it and the RND from the project will advance future ones.

stark bobcat

they can certainly try

Most beautiful card in my collection

junior ore
#

aluminum?

astral haven
#

Maybe the KNF card is prettier?

astral haven
junior ore
#

also wait thats an express card. or did they release both?

astral haven
#

9800gx2 was only pcie

junior ore
#

ooohh

#

that must be rare.

astral haven
#

Eh
It was under a hundo on ebay

junior ore
#

right on

#

man now I'm def gonna un-dust my 98 machine and boot it up again

#

though i gotta donate my unused jumbo crt tv. its in the waaaaaaaay

astral haven
#

I'm officially done with crt
I plan to never have a crt again
If it can't be emulated then I'm not gonna use it

frozen ingot
#

I wish I still had some of my old machines left

junior ore
#

I just want my one CRT TV and one CRT Monitor.

#

but i have two >.< and no where to put it.

frozen ingot
#

if I was serious about retro gaming I'd probably track down a CRT but they're not going to be around that much longer

pale sigil
#

Looks cleaner

astral haven
#

Not as clean as just the SD card lel

pale sigil
#

I have a 1tb SD

#

The SSD is running windows lol

astral haven
#

Are SD card swaps really that hard?

pale sigil
#

Running windows on an SD card is painful

stark bobcat
pale sigil
#

But also I don't wanna buy another 1tb or 512gb rn 😂

stark bobcat
#

but components might be hard to find

astral haven
frozen ingot
#

well yes and no

astral haven
#

Works fine for me

frozen ingot
#

yeah new tubes will def be an issue

#

they have a finite burntime

pale sigil
#

What SD card

#

@astral haven

astral haven
#

It was a random Samsung V30 card

frozen ingot
#

and a lot of them are approaching their end of life

astral haven
#

Tho I was using it in a USB adapter

pale sigil
#

Main thing is I cant be fucked buying a second sd card tbh

astral haven
#

I have like 20 micro ads lel

#

Sds

stark bobcat
#

shame there arn't any new crts being made it s a cool technology but sadly surpassed by modern display tech

astral haven
#

256gb 512gb 1tb
And a ton of 64gbs

pale sigil
#

I jsbe a 124gb

#

It has windows on it

#

But no room for anything haha

astral haven
#

Big enough
It V30?

pale sigil
#

I mainly installed it out of curiosity

#

Enough room? It can just store one game

#

That I play

frozen ingot
astral haven
#

Get vvvvvv and n++ then?

astral haven
#

Besides being potentially free

frozen ingot
#

biggest advantage imo was resolution not dependent on the actual display panels resolution, you could choose whichever worked best for the application with little to no compromise in image quality

astral haven
#

Except the base image quality was so low that modern lcds win off native res

frozen ingot
#

and the softness of the image really helped making old blocky games look better, they look pretty terrible on modern displays bc they're just too sharp dogekek

astral haven
#

That's fixable

stark bobcat
#

it s kinda sad tho games made with crts in mind dont look the same on modern displays

frozen ingot
#

but yeah that fuzziness wasn't so great on the desktop

#

also hard to find any CRTs above 19"

#

for computers

astral haven
stark bobcat
#

I just find crts neat and I'd use one with my gamecube if the darn things wern't so damn big lol

astral haven
#

Crts would be great if they were lighter, brighter, lower power, mountable, less blurry etc

stark bobcat
#

the only thing that puts me off them is the size and weight tbh don't care about the rest at all

frozen ingot
#

I haven't been fully convinced by attempts to add anti-aliasing/smoothening on older games to "crt-fy" them, but then again its been a long time since I last tried running old games on modern systems

astral haven
junior ore
#

a lot of games that do sprite stuff as well as emualtors typically come with filters to soften the sharpness and such

ashen spindle
#

also good BFI and other stuff to make it look good imo

frozen ingot
#

unless there's remasters or community updates of an older title I rarely bother trying to play vintage games anymore, its a disappointment more often than not to me having gotten used to modern game mechanics and UI

ashen spindle
#

heh, another reason we need even higher hz screens, so we can do things that reduce the effective frequency lol

frozen ingot
#

its nice seeing some old titles get cared for though, like openttd or openrct2

astral haven
#

I think future video cable standards should come with pwm control of the backlight by the gpu

ashen spindle
#

hmm but that makes me think, is BFI gonna be an issue on higher refresh oled screens since the few places they show overshoots and such is from off to another color

astral haven
#

Oleds problem is undershoot

#

Bfi is very ungood on oled

frozen ingot
#

OLED in general isn't really a good pick for a computer monitor

#

imo

ashen spindle
#

disagree

-written on my AW3423DW

frozen ingot
#

they tend to not like static pictures much

astral haven
#

Meh
It's fine
Durability is fixable

#

It's a relatively new tech in the grand scheme of things

frozen ingot
#

burn-ins are sadly very much permanent

ashen spindle
#

old oled, yes, definitely an issue

frozen ingot
#

sure there's measures you can take to avoid it

astral haven
junior ore
#

on some games, especially old, you DONT want to run at higher framerates.

#

thats why the turbo button existed

astral haven
#

Oleds aren't ready for monitors*

Unassisted
Yet

#

Dllcd is proof that contrast is king
Qdoled is a step in the right direction

frozen ingot
#

yeah its way better today than it used to be, but it can still happen if you don't take any measures at all to avoid long-term static images

astral haven
fair gull
#

my new calculator arrived

wheat plume
#

Wtf is that

ashen spindle
#

calculator

frozen ingot
#

when its pretty much impossible to cause it by "normal" use and available with 144hz+ refresh rates I'd def want one

astral haven
#

Those are damn expensive geez

wheat plume
#

O.o

astral haven
astral haven
#

And in theory it shouldn't color shift when it burns in
Only get slightly dimmer after the 10k hours

fair gull
#

the 5th digit was always adding an extra 1

#

which came from the 4th digit overflow

frozen ingot
#

and how's the price vs equivalent size/res/hz IPS or VA?

junior ore
#

please enlighten me to this calculator device thing

fair gull
#

taking off the bottom can an some compressed air fixed it

astral haven
#

Oh and you repaired it?
Sweet

junior ore
#

it has many switches and widgets and i want to know more

fair gull
#

already tried all calculations

junior ore
#

what is iiiiiiiiiit

astral haven
fair gull
#

anything

#

polynomials

#

dividing

#

roots

#

whatever u need

#

all done with gears

ashen spindle
fickle ore
#

😄

junior ore
#

i want a mechanical calculator that isn't the size of a desk too!

#

how do I get one?

astral haven
#

Ebay

junior ore
#

fuck

#

give me name

fair gull
#

ebay and around 1000-1500eur

junior ore
#

fuck

fair gull
#

curta

astral haven
#

It's literally written on the front

junior ore
#

give me one that wont break the bank

fair gull
#

curta calculator

#

gl

#

abbacus

astral haven
#

And they all have to be insanely toleranced

fair gull
#

like these calculators are precision machines but also somewhat built like a brick

frozen ingot
#

yeah that's a bit spicy for me kek

junior ore
#

i cry because I'll never have one

fair gull
#

i will get a second one maybe next year

astral haven
fair gull
#

or the year after

astral haven
#

One of each type?

fair gull
#

prob a 1
