Surely but not a pleasant experience to navigate using the steam deck controls
that reminds me linus mention on wan show he managed to brick yet another linux install after he did it that one time for the series
he bricked a pre installed ubuntu laptop
i saw that too xD
worse than me
o.0
yup its starting, they gotta clear out inventory in the next 3-4 months
what is it with sony and making it so fucking easy to install hard drives/ssds
it's removing one panel and removing one screw to get to the expansion bay on the PS5
well they dont lose anything from it and rather makes it so you are more likely to enjoy their product and buy more games etc.
so its in their interest to keep it simple
Depends what version
11
Makes sense
That game is well optimized as it is
This is why ai upscaling exists
Yeah...
You don't get the special features on windows
Yes
That makes a ton of sense
Honestly probably unnecessary on windows anyways
dont need fsr in the os just in the games
Exactly
i need a bigger drive
Most games don't have it in the settings
Just go to local drive bank and rob it
SD card?
Is there any reason to get a portable SSD over a portable hard drive? Since USB isn't fast enough for SSDs
Those are probably more attainable and you can keep less used stuff on it
Ngl I'm not a fan of the deck ui
Probably not at usb 3
Every possible reason
Now if you do an internal swap that is different story
It's cheaper for me to do this
Vs SD card
Really now
Just get an SSD and use a SATA adapter. Don't buy an "external SSD"
Alright then
That's what most people refer to
Still must connect it to USB
That's what I'm doing... I have a few SSDs spare I wack into a Sata to usb caddy
yeah here that's not at all, people think external ssds are different than regular ssds
They are fool
One goes inside you another goes on your head
I wish I had spare SSDs
@empty wren it's like 130 for a 1tb 2230 Vs 150 for SD card
if i can get an sd card on sale id get one though
Yeah alright I see your point
supposedly this time they almost only do amazon products so maybe not
oh really
Honestly who knows waiting does not murder anyone
maybe i should get this totally legit one
Also this is same sized sss right?
Cringe
Memory card is not a beand
1tb sd vs 2230
Ah okay last part is the size
yes
Is there like one port on the steam deck for ssd
another option is getting 2x 512gb SD cards....
Oh nevermind then
also yes only one m2 slot
What's this about??
Those are like 120MB/s
you can cram in a 2242 butt that brings issues
deck is capped at 100
oh well
you could watch the video and then know what its about
No
Stuff
from the desc:
Arm CPUs are taking over. Apple Silicon showed us that desktop computers need not be power hogs - Why haven't AMD, Intel, and Nvidia done the same, and would you want it?
my guess: they're saying build a regular amd/intel pc before arm takes over or some nonsense
Oh
also chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:53 PCs are great, but...
2:05 They still run on old tech
2:53 Intel and AMD are in trouble, but that's a good thing
5:27 Contracts, monopolies, and Qualcomm's failure to compete
6:32 PCs have already taken the first steps to change
8:14 Arm's advantages are integrated
10:10 Arm chips can go bigger
11:19 Conclusion - This is going to suck for enthusiasts
Yeah because heat generated by modern stuff and inefficeny
regardless, fuck them for clickbait titles and content
I'll believe when I see it
And apparently the speaker mentions how in the future it would be better for companies to sell soc
Which is hard to replace
So throw away
And buy new one
i was also looking into chopping up a longer nvme drive

Okay so that is safe to then
Pretty much yes
Oh and how we could get more competition cuz apple Google Samsung (Qualcomm sucks)
surprise surprise all companies suck
from china concerns me
everywhere just does not have stock any,ore
wait don't you have a nas
i aslo looked for ssds i could chop up
yes
you could network drive it, as shitty as that is
Steam Deck
so what? unless i'm missing something here, it should be possible regardless, no?
oh right... it being portable... yeah kinda forgot that's a major selling point of the device.
but also
still possible though, if you have an unlimited data plan I guess
whatever works for you ¯_(ツ)_/¯
ngl
fucking love the profile perks
for having a deck haha
they look so nice
Another idea was using a mount
lol
omg
5th Nov is coming up soon

#worksforme setting full-screen-api.warning.timeout to 0
Legit did that
But it's not..
You just made a new variable callled full-screen.api.warning.timeout = -1
oh, it worked now
Disgusting
ya disgusting console u got there
Psvota running wondows
How does it differ from Krunner
Kind of feels weird that Microsoft never really pushed the concept themselves
then again their search is borderline useless so it probably wouldn't bode well
you can get a krunner-like search in Windows using MS PowerToys
but yeah, its just the same results as the search in the start menu so meh
On plasma it's also the same search as the start menu one.
Still there is a difference between hiding the option somewhere and pushing it.
krunner has more features than the search in kickstart menu
you can do web search and spell checking and currency conversion etc etc
Both the search in application launcher and krunner use the same backend, so you can do currency conversions in the start menu as well.
really???
I dont have plasma desktop installed so I cant try it
here is Powertoy's search
I hope winget gets more apps in the repo
its super handy
I used it to install Steam LOL
winget install --id=Valve.Steam -e
um ok
I must be obsessed with Reddit

Ngl I tend to lay by apps from spotlight rather often, almost always
With windows search bar sometimes just fails me
Like cinebench
I have three versions
Search can only find two
And doesn’t tell me version
I always use krunner on linux but yea on windows I still use search just doesn't work that well, launchy used to be better in the past but I don't use windows enough for it to matter nowadays
Tbh I only ever use windows for gaming and when in Slovakia
Not all of them caught fire smh
Atm only thing my windows pc is better at than MacBook I have with me is ssd speeds too
LOL

phones with a mix of physical and touch buttons...
why
make them all touch or all physical
You mean capacitive
It was just easier to do
Plus the htc 10 had a fingerprint scanner
That was indented
Pretty sure that button is not even a real button either by the way
But it certainly looks like one
it is
I honestly do not 100% remember
But I remember someone letting me use their htc 10 for a while for a project
Since they upgraded to the iphone x
afaik the API number is real time right, no rounding up.
Its just the visual counter on the website that rounds up
Should be but possibly delayed

how would this card compare to my GTX 1660?
dont buy any gpu before next gen cards are out
look....I just want to swap to AMD
asap
cause im sick of dealing with laggy broken drivers in Linux
I would say there is an argument to be made that cards furder down the stack may take some more time to be released.
But € 500 is still a lot to pay for a 6600
well I didnt say wait and get a next gen card
current gen will drop in price
even if the equivalent tier is not out yet
I doubt RX6600 is current gen?
if its 500 euro
well, it does have a lot of vram
and pcie 4
soo
you could probably buy a cheap flight to the mainland, buy one there and still have money left over.
no thats just normal prices for most of them anywhere since prices are still not back to normal
I am seeing them starting at € 360 ish in the netherlands
well yeah its high price+ irish cost but not only the latter
I'd say at dutch prices it could still be worthwile, I don't think a new gen of gpu's is going to shake up this price bracket that much in the next 6 months or so.
But at € 500 that's a different story.
Especially since the main concideration is not performance.
it will go down because even if only upper end is released, that will trickle down since people will sell what they replace and that pushes down even to lower end
I am not denying that, but it's still a factor of time, especially if you don't plan to go used. and € 50 to € 100 less does not have to be a game changer.
also personally I just dont think its a good idea to upgrade right before a new gen comes out if the card isnt broken or so
well, used does also force the prices of retail to some degree and sure 100 less isnt insane but still 1/3 of msrp so its relative and depends on what you can afford
I still regret not jumping in when this gen was still fresh, even at inflated prices, my situation is such that it still made sense.
Now I am just waiting it out as it's really too late to buy a 6800xt / 6900xt now.
My gtx 1080 really does show it's age and linux drivers for nvidia are just a pain in the ass at times.
ok but thats not the same situation 😛
Just a side note, indeed not much to do with lana's situation.
I do really understand the Nvidia driver pain though. It just doesn't work that well on linux.
which is why everyone back then here suggested to get an amd card for the build ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Which would have been the right choice
The thing with nvidia is, on the surface as long as you don't use wayland it should be fine.
Over time you will notice it just is problematic to work with.
in game, I have no issues with the nvidia drivers
but the desktop is so laggy with them installed
moving windows around is a stuttery mess
even recording games with OBS using the NVENC encoder works perfectly
well then it sounds like the cheaper option would be to change to a linux version that works better and upgrade to amd later instead of paying 500 to have a lag free desktop lmao
does anyone here know how to edit videos
yeah, im using gnome desktop cause it works better with nvidia
cant use plasma....despite really wanting to cause it has a lot of problems with nvidia drivers and making things crash and freeze
well new gen is probably starting to come this quarter to wait till then is what makes the most sense
he calls himself high tech ..
although, his PC hardware is far better than mine..
sooooo lol
not worth the price
not for that kind of upgrade at least.
500 is still over the normal price
just wait for normalization of prices
Imagine crying about prices while living next to a country who loves the word exit
got 3 texts from my phone carrier this week about upgrading to 5G
I can barely get 4G at my house....why TF would I upgrade to 5G?
Imagine having to upgrade to it subscription wise.
its an extra 10 euro per month

Here you get what your phone supports. (Well technically you're also limited by what your carrier can offer, but you don't pay extra for any kind of Gee)
my phone doesnt even support it
usually cheaper plans exist that limit it, for prepaid and such
My new one does but it's not really of use. Signal coverage for it is terrible here and all I use my phone for data wise is news sites and spotify.
also they send you the option since they can only know you have 4g not what your coverage is nor where you would use it
yeah
im on prepay, I cant even get phone upgrades from them no matter how long ive been using them
Prepay? You mean like refueling it with credits?
Man... haven't seen one of those for a decade here. Those are only for our middle eastern immigrants trying to phone home...and criminals on burners 😄
I have to go to a store and get a 16 digit code to top it up each month
or I can call the automated phone line and use my card there via phone
Yikes.
NL, DE and FRA are usually the main hubs, depending on company.

lul linux bad
why arent u just installing it like a normal person lol
Amp hours is not battery capacity
You have to multiply by voltage, and your phone is 3.7 where your laptop is probably 18.5
a feature prob no one used lol
i hate always on top
the only thing i found it useful for was taskmanager
hmm
it puts a thicc border around the window you activate it on
color picker is nice
That’s horrible
The edges
Are
Not
Round
On the border
That is not a nice color picker either
this shows up after you pick the color
this shows under your mouse cursor while picking it
I use it quite often actually, good for stuff like notepad and calculator and stuff you don't want to be alt tabbing into
you can change the border size and color
it even can make a sound if activated
the color picker is nice but it has 1 flaw, it uses the color profile on the monitor for color
from the color management app
instead of using just the actual RGB monitor values
o
windows color profiles is just a mess in general
This is mostly a tutorial, but I do have some questions! Please discuss them here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TaranVH/comments/d42kd6

That shouldn't do anything bad unless it's really crappy
Nothing bad would happen in that case since it would be using the charger for power then
If you were heavily using the laptop and charging it that would be another story
leaving a laptop on the charger for longer than it needs does absolutely no damage
oh ok...good
Older laptops do continuously try to top up the battery ,resulting in heavily degraded batteries over time though.
Dell's UEFI sucks .-.
but at least it works with touchscreen so I dont have to use the jank touchpad movement in it
I am mostly talking about more budget laptops from roughly 10-12 years ago yea. I guess I'm getting old.
I know that feeling
Oh fuck even further back, my laptop from 2011 also works just fine
30in a few years, good as dead
30 right now in my case
was good knowing you before your death
💀
idk what I'm looking at, did you install some viruses on your steam deck?
b
Windows icons
sounds like a virus still
if that arrived at 100% and one charging caused it due to your scary house
would be funny ngl
SteamOS sucks balls
How's the battery health gone down already??
terrible product, dead on arrival
No comment
!remind me in 2 weeks when he managed to kill his deck
was using obs
im quite surprised
i thought it would shit itself fps wise streaming
tbf it shouldn
shouldn't surprise me
Few charging cycles and you don’t have a battery
Weird the maximum capacity is so jumpy
I mean to be fair it is not too far off what would be a year and half average loss in capacity
Df
That is horrendous
Probably just missreported values
nice, i got the 21u
thats because at best its a guestimation
Why does mail app on iPhone struggle so much with loading attachments smh
Android does not have a way to find your device if you lose it unlike "Find My" on iOS
but...IT DOES
you can find your devices on Android with your google account
Can confirm. Even with location turned off.
compare it to how long a reviewer was able to let it run X and if its about the same
then its just a wrong readout for the max value or so
Ha, mine is still 100%
@pale sigil try running "acpi -V" in konsole to see the battery health
to verify what the desktop itself says
This one just hurts me so much that people think this is a good thing

is there a way that I can go to the update screen because every time I log into wooting it says there is an update and I cant figure out how to get to it
#archived_fortnite_double_movement but something on your system is broken and making the updater not work properly. Suggest uninstalling and then reinstalling (using a new installer downloaded from the website of course!)
bet, I I have updates in the back ground turned off, I figured that was the problem but I was just wondering if I could go to the actual update screen. Thanks for the help!
I mean
How else am I gonna see if it's good unless I fill all my keys... /S
But hey also trying out qmk for the first time
Not gonna lie it's pretty interesting
I wonder if it's even theoretically possible for the wooting to be qmk compatible
Tho the web interface is alot nicer than having to reflash my keyboard entirely

So glad asus took the haptics seriously this time, finally a worthy device.

What
Well yes but I wish it only cost 500$
You mean on the right 🤣 ?
Well yes
Except it was few times that
Or well sure it’s not entirely just that
But about as powerful as just fans for anything GPU related
The joke is that even raspberry pis were scalped
It’s funny because my laptop beats it at everything but ssd speed
Even the cpu despite the cpu being 11900k
his cpu will be considered old by the time he gets a gpu
Well it’s already worse than my laptop
you mean the laptop thats not actually yours
Well yes
And it doesn't beat it at everything, just everything that you tested...
And now you can actually add in a GPU....
And your laptop better slaughter the heck out of a raspberry pi at everything including cpu speed
I'm wondering if anyone has any input in terms of brand, size factor, capacity and even RPM in terms of life span. I don't quite care about other matters, as long as they're not SMR (unless it can be argued). I don't have the budget for "server" grade drives, however, but I can afford to go above regular "home" grade drives.
That means you do have the budget to go server drives
Look up the exos drives
I don't have that budget. At all. Unless they sell them at lower capacities that I'm not aware of. They have 5 years warranty, but WD also does for their Black series.
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/internal-hard-drive/#sort=ppgb&page=1
.002c/gb more expensive than the absolute cheapest...
Choose Storage
Ok here's a better question
What type of data, and what type of devices need to have access
SATA connection, not SAS to begin with. Data type is gonna be family photos and videos.
FS doesn't really matter for the data, as long as I can figure something out for it.
Capacity?
Price per year you are willing to spend on maintanance?
Number of people who need access?
And there aren't any cheap sas drives
Min 500GB.
Max $200/y.
3 max, but likely gonna be the occasional single family member.
Hell even cut that to two I guess.
How does $13 a month sound?
1tb
Can be accessed by unlimited Google accounts
$20 a month gets you 250tb (same access)
Unfortunately cloud storage is not an option here, due to my privacy concerns. I can arrange them being able to access it wherever they want.
I'm aware I could encrypt the photos and videos beforehand, but I'd rather just avoid that outright.
🤷♀️ then you need to put an up front investment of 3 drives at least
And low capacity drives are big time bad for value
I'm aware low capacity is bad for value, but depending on how long they live, they might be worth it in my book. As for 3 drives, I see what you're getting two, but I'm just looking into getting two for now.
2 drives doesn't allow you to run parity
I am aware, but I have a couple of extra drives which are not currently being used.
So buy enough drives to make 3 of the right capacity?
No longer being manufactured
Not to mention they're all of varying capacity.
I've got a 40GB lying around for christ sake, don't think anyone is gonna be selling those
Buy of equal or larger capacity
You'll waste some space but use what you have
Oh
Uhhh
Like do you have any 500gb or 1tb drives?
Yep
Or 3 used 1tbs
Should be alot cheaper
Raid z2 or raid 6 them and you have yourself 2tb of useable storage with a loss of any 2 drives keeping data safe
2 new 1tbs shouldn't be more than $150
Well, any recommendations in terms of which brand or manufacturer? I'm trying to avoid "home" models.
And yeah, $150 sounds reasonable.
Then again, Canada.
Only avoid home models if you are trying to go zfs
For raid 6 it doesn't matter
Or 5 or 1
Well, let's... theoretically assume I'm going with ZFS. Advice?
Also might want to look into unRAID
Another big up front investment but highly expandable
It's too late, you wouldn't want to use your existing drive

Care elaborating? I don't care if the drive fails early or needs to be wiped.
Because I don't recall having issues running ZFS with drives from 2006 to 2018 and of varying capacity... Unless I was a dumbass and missed something huge here.
Did you have a drive fail and have to resliver?
Nope... and yes, I'm aware reslivering is crazy long
That and well, it potentially not working as intended depending on the circumstances.
On smr drives it takes 1000x as long as on cmr drives at the low end
Yeah which is why I specifically stated I didn't want a SMR drive. The 1TB I have is an older, but still reliable, CMR drive.
WD Black if I recall.
Yes, unfortunately. Didn't they release a link with which drives were SMR and CMR?
Yea but wd at least was found to be lying on it
And Seagate pretty much only listed super expensive drives
Wd was even caught lying about the rpm of their drives lol
Which you could prove by literally just recording audio of the drive spinning
It was 2019 last I cared to check
P sure the rpm nonsense was 2020 and 2021
All my drives are cloudd backed after hearing that 🤷♀️
As Joe Barbaro would say it: Holy shit what a fucking disappointment.
To be fair this was in us who like speed's favor
So... they lied about slow speeds? I get why they did it, shitty, but good for us I guess.
The problem is the drives are twice the heat and alooot louder
when does the wooting 60he release to the us
And they weren't faster because they were ofc smr drives
Well everything is hybrid now
Usually about half smr by platter area
So about 2/3 smr by capacity
The only exception are the top end helium wd gold's that don't say archive, and the exos and barracuda pro
For the reds I believe there's a line of reds that have no smr but they are espensive asf
Tldr get an exos and back it up to the cloud
For your redundancy
jesus do you just print money in your backyard or what?
Approx cost is 250 per year for 24tb of local + backed up storage
And I get to back up all my computers directly to it super easily
And I have it set up to show up as a direct network share on my nas (with the full 250tb of capacity)
Remember
Google workspace accounts aren't fed into the Google algorithm
And in most countries you have the option to require all your data to stay within that country's datacenters
That we know of. Yet. I'll keep looking on PCPartPicker for now as well as other places.
Ooh
$12 ($13 including the domain) per month includes 2tb of storage now instead of 1
Nah
We do know that, I work it for a nonprofit that has requirements from our insurance, and Google does meet that requirement on their workspace accounts
And anyways, it takes a very short amount of time to set up a computer as an encrypting rsync relay to Google drive
Can even be done on a raspberry pi for goodness sakes
But I tell you
Shared Google drives are very very nice
I'll pass on that for now. Like I said, I've got some privacy concerns.
It's an up front investment of a raspberry pi to fix that issue...
Well yes, doing so would resolve the issue, but, it's Google.
Less trustworthy than the slut next door. Probably.
(No offense to sluts.)
No
Your pi encrypt the data before it goes to Google
Then your pi decrypts it when you request it
I get that, but once it's on Google servers, it could theoretically be there forever.
AKA once it's on the internet, it stays on it forever.
Which is why you encrypt it properly?
Carmoben please mate, I just don't want to play with Google. At all.
I don't trust it, even if I put the best encryption on my family's photo/video gallery.
Not to mention being bitten by Google in the past.
You either go expensive or you go cloud 🤷♀️
Expensive it is then. I'll have to save up, even if I wanted to get this out of the way right now.
13 a month
You can believe what you want
But our insurance and grantors say it's ok so we use it 🤷♀️
Like
There are actual laws that have huge penalties that Google hasn't broken yet
Remember
Google considers "Business" customers differently
Name a single time they have been sued regarding their business account private data
Like
It's all about their free Google accounts...
And the addage goes the way the addage goes
Fine, maybe I can't find one relating to their business accounts. Doesn't change the fact that even if they do consider said "business" customers differently, that they're part of the PRISM program, and that I've been bitten by them before.
'Nough said.
Then you definetly shouldn't buy any products from any company that has existed for more than 5 years and has anyone who has existed for more than that in their supply chain...
Lemme come up with an example of a company that does that...
Hmmm....
🤔
Yea nope
Not a single example I can come up with
Why do you think I buy stuff 2nd hand when I can...
Because you want to make sure it has been tampered with?
what's to say first hand wasn't?
NSA last time I checked can and will intercept packages.
That's really hard to do for helium drives
what part of it? Is the PCB not outside the helium encasing?
And if you have the NSA after you, and are on discord, it's too late
Not a matter of if, more like when
The chips are on the protected side of the PCB, and if you remove the PCB after sealing, I don't think it's possible to reseal outside of the helium sealing machines
Just leave the drive running for a day, and if it starts screeching then you know it's been tampered with
Anyways I wouldn't worry about it
If you have any device with a CPU and modem, the NSA has access to it if they want it bad enough
That is if you are in the us
Canada. But we have our own equivalent of it. As for the helium stuff, that's news to me. Last time I checked PCBs are always outside the drive, and there is a very flimsy... connector? pressure connector? at the motor.
The motor connector isn't the part that matters lol
I know, but said motor connector is generally attached directly to the PCB.
As such, you generally cannot remove the PCB without removing the motor connector.
Yes
But the data connector is what connects to the data
Anyways
That shouldn't even matter either way
regardless, this doesn't change my opinion or view. i'm gonna save up. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Sure
As long as you know it's illogical, you do what you want
Tho if you are canadian, it's not exactly a free country as the meme goes
Better than the US at least...
Freedom wise?
Nah
That's not the way the meme goes
Might as well ask this while my brain is still slightly functioning: anyone aware of a mouse that isn't gonna fall apart after ~4 months of use? Logitech, SteelSeries and Roccat have failed me to date (various different failures). Zowie might be what I try next, but I just want a mouse which is decent and won't fucking fall apart (1600dpi, left, right, middle, scroll, pg forward, pg back). And no, I'm not rough with the mice either.
Even the Dollarama (chinesium) mice have failed me in this regard.
The most reliable mice are the logitech cheapos
G103 and gpro are the kings of solid
If you want drop off a building tho you need to get some old Microsoft schiz
The Microsoft intellimice are gooood
I'll take a look into it tomorrow as well as other things that may show up. As for Logitech, already tried the g300s and g203... I must have the worst fucking luck in the world regarding Logitech mice.
the g300 series is garbo
but the g203 are very solid mice...
Like I said, I have shit luck. The g300s, plastic for a button literally separated from the chassis and could not be fixed due to how it was assembled. The g203 had the left click button go out. Completely. Made a sound but no action.
oh yea mouse click buttons
all the cheap mice use omrons, and all the expensive mice use omrons
you have to go for specialty stuffs to buy a mouse that doesnt use omrons
I wanna mod my old phone to remove the polarizing filter on the screen
This shit is so cool
but why?
cool for a youtube vid, and showing it off to friends. but quite limited irl :p
It's really freaking cool
hf modding it, using it once or twice and then never again
btw dont think about using it landscape and portrait without 2 seperated pairs of glasses or rotating your head
not to mention you have to wear glasses to use the phone at all times
Looks like a cool way to have privacy though
well i threw away a monitor i modded
yes privacy but the viewing angle in terms of like rotating my head left or right was severely limited
its rather impractical
so you’re telling me youtube videos don’t reflect the real experience for watch time??
impossible
would that still work if you hold the phone sideways
No

Unless you got a second pair of glasses that are aligned for it to be sideways xd
the reading glasses and the time alone glasses
Xd

heh nice http://www.transistorcount.com/ now has a counter that goes in real time showing where the current transistor count for moore's law is
Except they are kinda missing a few important chips
Namely Cerebras' and dojo...
oh its not up to date and currently being updated
Ok, so I am back with my silly pet project lol. But this time I want to turn it into an exhaustive list. So, Twitterverse: let me know if I missed your favorite chip from the past ~half-decade only [older stuff will be filled later]. https://t.co/6JoHyrXkOs
Glance is apparently getting ready to launch ads on your Android lock screen. For those who do not know, Glance is a subsidiary of an ad-tech firm called InMobi group, the company made its presence in Asian markets in the past and now expanding in other regions including the States. bet this will go down well
I doubt that'll fly in Europe
I do approve of this
Gonna get more people to switch over to the superior mobile OS
Actual free phones coming soon

Window Manager
within linux you can configure and change your Window Manager and such
actually its all Operating Systems. its just you don't normally change yours for windows or mac or android etcetera.
Is it like Quadro desktop manager?
Is it the new word for desktop environment?
either primarily keybaord shortcut based, terminal, convential windows-like, max like, docker etcetera
no wait i got it mixed
here, better than my memory cells : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_manager
A window manager is system software that controls the placement and appearance of windows within a windowing system in a graphical user interface. Most window managers are designed to help provide a desktop environment. They work in conjunction with the underlying graphical system that provides required functionality—support for graphics hardwar...
one manages the applications, the manager
the desktop environment is basically the gui. roughly.
the differences are things like the Tiling window managers, which focuses strongly on using your keyboard to navigate and do everything. https://res.cloudinary.com/practicaldev/image/fetch/s--DOPXaLgN--/c_limit%2Cf_auto%2Cfl_progressive%2Cq_auto%2Cw_880/https://dev-to-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/i/x5tay3kxf1sz0amtepoq.png
Sometimes Linux folks wonder why people don't use Linux
I have absolutely no idea how they expect a system this fragmented to be put into production
it's not. and this is purely optional.
it's not the default.
want to see default?
yeah its not default because linux hates bloat so much you need to know what else exists and manually add it
You missed the point per usual
that depends on which linux
i don't see what you mean by "fragmented"
are you saying its because its jsut not all owned and sold by one company?
if you want there, there is a linux for that.
So imagine I download a window manager on windows
That window manager doesn't prevent me from using the windows features
I can still win + left right up down etc
It just gives me extra features on top
Where do I go to look up those "os level" shortcuts for Linux?
within arch you can install multiple window managers and switch between them within the login screen. to install you can just simply install it via the terminal with a quick command. so something like :
sudo pacman -S i3
Imagine having to install basic features
Swing and a miss
it would already have one
during installation you pick and choose what you want
you asked about installing extras
this was fucking it
what did I "miss"?
Nah I'm fine with having to install a window manager
The question entirely
okay then elaborate. you were saying about installing another window manager, right?
or are you saying installing multiple together in one?
oh
ooooohh
i did miss the question
can you define "os level" shortcuts? you mean on par with window shortcuts like you mentioned as in win + left?
most desktop environments will include, in their settings, the shortcuts for such things. and configure them.
for instance, on my laptop : I have my start menu pop up with function+space
"most" does not a standard make
well thats because some people makem whacky ones 😛 the ones that come with linux operating systems will indeed come with that.
Is there even a basic linux
you can literally install a desktop enviornment made by billybobjoe that doesn't ahve that, at your descretion. but it wouldn't be standard included in installation.
yes you can build a linux from scratch if you desire.
GNOME, KDE, and the other major used ones will all list their shortcuts
As in like, completely stock as shipped from Torvalds sex dungeon
including the tiling ones like i3
Cause fuck Ubuntu and the rest
well the thing is : Linux is open source stuff.
there is no "just a linux"
unless ytou build and compile it yourself.
i super recommend Arch or a 'pre-built' arch.
i specifically run EndeavourOS which is from the Arch branch but I don't have to go through the tedious process building it myself and it doesn't come with stuff I didn't want.
if you want the most straight forward : there is Manjaro.
both of these are highly respected.
better than ubuntu.
And they are able to brick when you try to launch steam
Manjaro is also Arch based*
i guess you nebver had a blue screen of death that doesn't tell you anything 🙂
or locks you out because you forgot your microsoft account login 🙂
or other such stuff
So basically
Well I don’t log in so I can’t really log out
well congrats on not using a computer?
There is no basic linux
you can get linuxs that are basic
Cause it's all bloated infested shit
it just wont be called "linux".
no you can get really simple easy to use linux that is straight forward.
Oh I use normal windows just no login anywhere
here, this one is very recommended for trying out first time. super straight forward and isn't taxing on the system. you can install it on a potato. https://linuxmint.com/
Tbf the abundance of logins in Linux is really damn annoying
I just installed W10 offline ro avoid M$ account bullshit
Yes I've been running Mint for 3 years now
you don't have to login with linux
And I DESPISE Mint
you can set up your linux to not need ot log in like windows.
fine, don't use mint. there are others.
You can use windows without logging in too
Linux is how to make everything complicated and slap it onto the user
its so annoying, you have to turn off wifi and unplug Ethernet each time too during install >.<
then just say that instead.
This is the definition of fragmented
Should prolly try hackintosh next, that's prolly better quality than linux at this point
Pretty sure that’s also older and there are other ways without having to disable WiFi and all
once more : elaborate. be specific.
Split resources
what do you mean "split resources"?
I feel like Linux is fun if you like to tinker, but when you want an OS that just
Works
It makes it a hard sell to people who just want to hit the ground running.
It's like some people love baking, others just buy some doughnuts at the bakery, yeah maybe it's not as tasty as what you could potentially make, but fuck it
It's random how many there are
linux isn't... owned bya single company...
And that's the problem
my linux just works
It's Linux' blessing and its curse
Except when it doesn't
how thats a problem to not have to pay for your operating system? or be forced in stuff?
Like
Fragmented doesn't nescessarily mean bad
It just means it can't be used as the general worker os in most orgs
Windows isn't paid, just saying
you know they control your shit, right? its called a monopoly. Linux isn't tied to a monopoly.
Someone pays
someone pays.... what?
Someone ALWAYS pays
pffffft
Peeps really think Linux is some goated shit
linux is an operating system
Prolly riddled with NSA backdoors anyways
it has its uses and thats that.
i don't hype it beyond what it is. and I don't down play it either.
Can I sell you guys some Temple OS?
I don't think you get what you mean
I wish that evolved to something more
Was pretty cool
dude stop being pedantic. I get it. it's jsut the damn kernels and shit, its not the whole OS and stuff. but like, you get the point of what I was saying. moving on.
I asked the lad for basic linux, fresh out of the factory
Where's my linux
Stock
your trolling.
No shit involved
stop.
here. now stop it. https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
Why can I download windows 11 off of Microsofts website but there is no linux based on linux
because you don't understand a thing.
El problemo with linux
I find it sad that I have to follow a guide to get stock linux
they are trolling, and now I feel liek you are by pretending they aren't and saying i'm the problem like i'm some average linux user when i've only been using it for half a year :/
Seriously where's linux vanilla ISO
Vexxs trolling aside one issue with Linux is that the basic reply is usually to go to a wiki since it’s to fragmented
no it was the reply to someone trolling
i wouldn't suggest someone to go to the wiki for that.
i already tried to answer them.
but they ignored it
so i gave them a troll response.
low effort gets low effort.
Seems very user friendly to build your own vanilla linux out of source code
Linux is an os
So I can use it to replace windows
No you need (insert distro of choice)
Ok so what distro has the best window management
No that's the window manager
Etc...
no idea where you thought that up.
You literally said that
You did in fact say that
So anyone can link me a linux stock/vanilla/barebones/clean ISO or something?
he literally asked for "just the linux"
I'm still waiting
