Windows

empty wren
#

Surely but not a pleasant experience to navigate using the steam deck controls

ashen spindle
#

that reminds me linus mention on wan show he managed to brick yet another linux install after he did it that one time for the series havo

#

he bricked a pre installed ubuntu laptop havo

empty wren
#

That is something

pale sigil
#

worse than me

#

o.0

ashen spindle
#

yup its starting, they gotta clear out inventory in the next 3-4 months

chrome estuary
#

what is it with sony and making it so fucking easy to install hard drives/ssds

#

it's removing one panel and removing one screw to get to the expansion bay on the PS5

ashen spindle
#

well they dont lose anything from it and rather makes it so you are more likely to enjoy their product and buy more games etc.

#

so its in their interest to keep it simple

pale sigil
#

Windows on external SSD over USB

#

PAIN

empty wren
#

Depends what version

pale sigil
#

11

empty wren
#

No I mean usb

#

3.1 and up is pretty good

pale sigil
#

@empty wrenidk running windows seems to be bleh

#

over usb 3 atg leaast

empty wren
#

Makes sense

pale sigil
#

Im blown away

#

ngl

#

D2 maxed out 30-42fps

#

at 80fov

empty wren
#

That game is well optimized as it is

pale sigil
#

tbh

#

yes but no

#

For lower end it can be a hit and miss

empty wren
#

Well they also limit the area

#

But okay

pale sigil
#

obviously put this on a big screen it looks shit

#

lol

empty wren
#

This is why ai upscaling existsmm

pale sigil
#

Not with windows

#

hehe

wheat plume
#

Yeah...
You don't get the special features on windows

empty wren
#

What special featuees

#

For the steam deck?

wheat plume
#

Yes

empty wren
#

That makes a ton of sense

wheat plume
#

Suspend/resume games
Fsr
limiting tdp on the fly

#

Etc etc

empty wren
#

Honestly probably unnecessary on windows anyways

ashen spindle
#

dont need fsr in the os just in the games

empty wren
#

Exactly

pale sigil
#

i need a bigger drive

wheat plume
#

Most games don't have it in the settings

pale sigil
#

256gb is like 8gb

#

these days

empty wren
empty wren
wheat plume
#

Is there any reason to get a portable SSD over a portable hard drive? Since USB isn't fast enough for SSDs

empty wren
#

Those are probably more attainable and you can keep less used stuff on it

pale sigil
#

Ngl I'm not a fan of the deck ui

empty wren
#

Now if you do an internal swap that is different story

pale sigil
#

Vs SD card

empty wren
#

Really now

slow garnet
#

Just get an SSD and use a SATA adapter. Don't buy an "external SSD"

empty wren
#

Alright then

pale sigil
wheat plume
pale sigil
#

That's what I'm doing... I have a few SSDs spare I wack into a Sata to usb caddy

slow garnet
#

mage yeah here that's not at all, people think external ssds are different than regular ssds

empty wren
#

One goes inside you another goes on your head

wheat plume
#

I wish I had spare SSDs

pale sigil
#

@empty wren it's like 130 for a 1tb 2230 Vs 150 for SD card

#

if i can get an sd card on sale id get one though

empty wren
#

Yeah alright I see your point

pale sigil
#

prime day is coming up too

#

which can be good for storage

ashen spindle
#

supposedly this time they almost only do amazon products so maybe not

pale sigil
#

oh really

empty wren
#

Honestly who knows waiting does not murder anyone

pale sigil
#

maybe i should get this totally legit one

empty wren
empty wren
#

Memory card is not a beand

pale sigil
empty wren
#

Ah okay last part is the size

pale sigil
#

yes

empty wren
#

Is there like one port on the steam deck for ssd

pale sigil
#

another option is getting 2x 512gb SD cards....

empty wren
#

Oh nevermind then

pale sigil
#

also yes only one m2 slot

wheat plume
#

What's this about??

empty wren
pale sigil
#

you can cram in a 2242 butt that brings issues

pale sigil
empty wren
#

mage oh well

ashen spindle
#

you could watch the video and then know what its about

wheat plume
#

No

empty wren
slow garnet
#

from the desc:
Arm CPUs are taking over. Apple Silicon showed us that desktop computers need not be power hogs - Why haven't AMD, Intel, and Nvidia done the same, and would you want it?

my guess: they're saying build a regular amd/intel pc before arm takes over or some nonsense

empty wren
#

Oh

slow garnet
#

also chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:53 PCs are great, but...
2:05 They still run on old tech
2:53 Intel and AMD are in trouble, but that's a good thing
5:27 Contracts, monopolies, and Qualcomm's failure to compete
6:32 PCs have already taken the first steps to change
8:14 Arm's advantages are integrated
10:10 Arm chips can go bigger
11:19 Conclusion - This is going to suck for enthusiasts

empty wren
#

Yeah because heat generated by modern stuff and inefficeny

slow garnet
#

regardless, fuck them for clickbait titles and content

fickle ore
#

I'll believe when I see it

empty wren
#

And apparently the speaker mentions how in the future it would be better for companies to sell soc

#

Which is hard to replace

#

So throw away

#

And buy new one

pale sigil
#

i was also looking into chopping up a longer nvme drive

empty wren
pale sigil
#

some cheaper 2280 drives dont have chops after 2230

empty wren
#

Okay so that is safe to then

pale sigil
#

sadly these models alll sold out

empty wren
pale sigil
slow garnet
#

surprise surprise all companies suck

pale sigil
#

from china concerns me

empty wren
#

Well better than sd card that is obviously a scam

#

Though could ask for photos

pale sigil
#

everywhere just does not have stock any,ore

slow garnet
#

wait don't you have a nas

pale sigil
#

i aslo looked for ssds i could chop up

empty wren
#

Check awllee stars

#

And reviews if possible

pale sigil
slow garnet
#

you could network drive it, as shitty as that is

pale sigil
slow garnet
#

so what? unless i'm missing something here, it should be possible regardless, no?

pale sigil
#

Um

#

Dependent on a network on a portable device

slow garnet
#

oh right... it being portable... yeah kinda forgot that's a major selling point of the device.

pale sigil
#

but also

slow garnet
#

still possible though, if you have an unlimited data plan I guess

pale sigil
#

id just use steam streaming

#

its fucking amazing on the deck

slow garnet
#

whatever works for you ¯_(ツ)_/¯

pale sigil
#

ngl

#

fucking love the profile perks

#

for having a deck haha

#

they look so nice

#

Another idea was using a mount

#

lol

wheat plume
#

That looks like a fucking IED

Deepin desktop now has "Grand Search"

#

its basically Spotlight xd

thick elk
#

How does it differ from Krunner

wheat plume
#

it doesnt!!!!

#

probably has less features than krunner tbf

thick elk
#

Kind of feels weird that Microsoft never really pushed the concept themselves

#

then again their search is borderline useless so it probably wouldn't bode well

wheat plume
#

you can get a krunner-like search in Windows using MS PowerToys

#

but yeah, its just the same results as the search in the start menu so meh

thick elk
#

On plasma it's also the same search as the start menu one.
Still there is a difference between hiding the option somewhere and pushing it.

wheat plume
#

krunner has more features than the search in kickstart menu

#

you can do web search and spell checking and currency conversion etc etc

thick elk
#

Both the search in application launcher and krunner use the same backend, so you can do currency conversions in the start menu as well.

wheat plume
#

really???

#

I dont have plasma desktop installed so I cant try it

#

here is Powertoy's search

#

I hope winget gets more apps in the repo

#

its super handy

#

I used it to install Steam LOL

#

winget install --id=Valve.Steam -e

pale sigil

I must be obsessed with Reddit

wheat plume
#

how would this card compare to my GTX 1660?

ashen spindle
#

dont buy any gpu before next gen cards are out

wheat plume
#

look....I just want to swap to AMD

#

asap

#

cause im sick of dealing with laggy broken drivers in Linux

thick elk
#

I would say there is an argument to be made that cards furder down the stack may take some more time to be released.
But € 500 is still a lot to pay for a 6600

ashen spindle
#

well I didnt say wait and get a next gen card

#

current gen will drop in price

#

even if the equivalent tier is not out yet

wheat plume
#

I doubt RX6600 is current gen?

#

if its 500 euro

#

well, it does have a lot of vram

#

and pcie 4

#

soo

ashen spindle
#

thats mostly because its 330 launch price

wheat plume
#

got to remember, this is an irish website :/

#

got that irish tax .-.

thick elk
#

you could probably buy a cheap flight to the mainland, buy one there and still have money left over.

ashen spindle
#

no thats just normal prices for most of them anywhere since prices are still not back to normal

thick elk
#

I am seeing them starting at € 360 ish in the netherlands

ashen spindle
#

well yeah its high price+ irish cost but not only the latter

thick elk
#

I'd say at dutch prices it could still be worthwile, I don't think a new gen of gpu's is going to shake up this price bracket that much in the next 6 months or so.
But at € 500 that's a different story.

#

Especially since the main concideration is not performance.

ashen spindle
#

it will go down because even if only upper end is released, that will trickle down since people will sell what they replace and that pushes down even to lower end

thick elk
#

I am not denying that, but it's still a factor of time, especially if you don't plan to go used. and € 50 to € 100 less does not have to be a game changer.

ashen spindle
#

also personally I just dont think its a good idea to upgrade right before a new gen comes out if the card isnt broken or so

#

well, used does also force the prices of retail to some degree and sure 100 less isnt insane but still 1/3 of msrp so its relative and depends on what you can afford

thick elk
#

I still regret not jumping in when this gen was still fresh, even at inflated prices, my situation is such that it still made sense.
Now I am just waiting it out as it's really too late to buy a 6800xt / 6900xt now.
My gtx 1080 really does show it's age and linux drivers for nvidia are just a pain in the ass at times.

ashen spindle
#

ok but thats not the same situation 😛

thick elk
#

Just a side note, indeed not much to do with lana's situation.

#

I do really understand the Nvidia driver pain though. It just doesn't work that well on linux.

ashen spindle
#

which is why everyone back then here suggested to get an amd card for the build ¯_(ツ)_/¯

thick elk
#

Which would have been the right choice

#

The thing with nvidia is, on the surface as long as you don't use wayland it should be fine.
Over time you will notice it just is problematic to work with.

wheat plume
#

in game, I have no issues with the nvidia drivers

#

but the desktop is so laggy with them installed

#

moving windows around is a stuttery mess

#

even recording games with OBS using the NVENC encoder works perfectly

ashen spindle
#

well then it sounds like the cheaper option would be to change to a linux version that works better and upgrade to amd later instead of paying 500 to have a lag free desktop lmao

latent mural
#

does anyone here know how to edit videos

wheat plume
#

cant use plasma....despite really wanting to cause it has a lot of problems with nvidia drivers and making things crash and freeze

ashen spindle
#

well new gen is probably starting to come this quarter to wait till then is what makes the most sense

wheat plume
#

#

although, his PC hardware is far better than mine..

#

wheat plume

got 3 texts from my phone carrier this week about upgrading to 5G

#

I can barely get 4G at my house....why TF would I upgrade to 5G?

reef patrol
#

Imagine having to upgrade to it subscription wise.

wheat plume
#

its an extra 10 euro per month

reef patrol
#

Here you get what your phone supports. (Well technically you're also limited by what your carrier can offer, but you don't pay extra for any kind of Gee)

wheat plume
#

my phone doesnt even support it

ashen spindle
#

usually cheaper plans exist that limit it, for prepaid and such

reef patrol
#

My new one does but it's not really of use. Signal coverage for it is terrible here and all I use my phone for data wise is news sites and spotify.

ashen spindle
#

also they send you the option since they can only know you have 4g not what your coverage is nor where you would use it

wheat plume
#

yeah

#

im on prepay, I cant even get phone upgrades from them no matter how long ive been using them

reef patrol

astral haven
slow garnet
#

I'm wondering if anyone has any input in terms of brand, size factor, capacity and even RPM in terms of life span. I don't quite care about other matters, as long as they're not SMR (unless it can be argued). I don't have the budget for "server" grade drives, however, but I can afford to go above regular "home" grade drives.

astral haven
#

That means you do have the budget to go server drives
Look up the exos drives

slow garnet
#

I don't have that budget. At all. Unless they sell them at lower capacities that I'm not aware of. They have 5 years warranty, but WD also does for their Black series.

astral haven
#

Ok here's a better question
What type of data, and what type of devices need to have access

slow garnet
#

SATA connection, not SAS to begin with. Data type is gonna be family photos and videos.

#

FS doesn't really matter for the data, as long as I can figure something out for it.

astral haven
#

Capacity?
Price per year you are willing to spend on maintanance?
Number of people who need access?

astral haven
slow garnet
#

Min 500GB.
Max $200/y.
3 max, but likely gonna be the occasional single family member.

#

Hell even cut that to two I guess.

astral haven
#

How does $13 a month sound?
1tb
Can be accessed by unlimited Google accounts
$20 a month gets you 250tb (same access)

slow garnet
#

Unfortunately cloud storage is not an option here, due to my privacy concerns. I can arrange them being able to access it wherever they want.

astral haven
#

Cloud storage + privacy is just elbow grease

#

The storage costs the same

slow garnet
#

I'm aware I could encrypt the photos and videos beforehand, but I'd rather just avoid that outright.

astral haven
#

🤷‍♀️ then you need to put an up front investment of 3 drives at least
And low capacity drives are big time bad for value

slow garnet
#

I'm aware low capacity is bad for value, but depending on how long they live, they might be worth it in my book. As for 3 drives, I see what you're getting two, but I'm just looking into getting two for now.

astral haven
#

2 drives doesn't allow you to run parity

slow garnet
#

I am aware, but I have a couple of extra drives which are not currently being used.

astral haven
#

So buy enough drives to make 3 of the right capacity?

slow garnet
#

No longer being manufactured lul

#

Not to mention they're all of varying capacity.

#

I've got a 40GB lying around for christ sake, don't think anyone is gonna be selling those lul

astral haven
#

Buy of equal or larger capacity
You'll waste some space but use what you have

#

Oh

#

Uhhh

#

Like do you have any 500gb or 1tb drives?

slow garnet
#

One 1TB drive.

#

Your suggestion is to buy two more 1TBs then I guess?

astral haven
#

Yep

#

Or 3 used 1tbs
Should be alot cheaper

#

Raid z2 or raid 6 them and you have yourself 2tb of useable storage with a loss of any 2 drives keeping data safe

#

2 new 1tbs shouldn't be more than $150

slow garnet
#

Well, any recommendations in terms of which brand or manufacturer? I'm trying to avoid "home" models.

#

And yeah, $150 sounds reasonable.

#

Then again, Canada. lul

astral haven
#

Only avoid home models if you are trying to go zfs
For raid 6 it doesn't matter

#

Or 5 or 1

slow garnet
#

Well, let's... theoretically assume I'm going with ZFS. Advice?

astral haven
#

Also might want to look into unRAID
Another big up front investment but highly expandable

astral haven
slow garnet
#

Care elaborating? I don't care if the drive fails early or needs to be wiped.

#

Because I don't recall having issues running ZFS with drives from 2006 to 2018 and of varying capacity... Unless I was a dumbass and missed something huge here.

astral haven
#

Did you have a drive fail and have to resliver?

slow garnet
#

Nope... and yes, I'm aware reslivering is crazy long

#

That and well, it potentially not working as intended depending on the circumstances.

astral haven
#

On smr drives it takes 1000x as long as on cmr drives at the low end

slow garnet
#

Yeah which is why I specifically stated I didn't want a SMR drive. The 1TB I have is an older, but still reliable, CMR drive.

#

WD Black if I recall.

astral haven
#

Ah

#

Then yea look for another 3 of them used and pretty

#

New stuff is all smr

slow garnet
#

Yes, unfortunately. Didn't they release a link with which drives were SMR and CMR?

astral haven
#

Yea but wd at least was found to be lying on it

#

And Seagate pretty much only listed super expensive drives

slow garnet
#

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

#

I didn't hear about this at all.

astral haven
#

Wd was even caught lying about the rpm of their drives lol
Which you could prove by literally just recording audio of the drive spinning

slow garnet
#

What the fuck? Was this before or after ~2014?

#

You got me invested now.

astral haven
#

It was 2019 last I cared to check
P sure the rpm nonsense was 2020 and 2021

#

All my drives are cloudd backed after hearing that 🤷‍♀️

slow garnet
#

As Joe Barbaro would say it: Holy shit what a fucking disappointment.

astral haven
#

To be fair this was in us who like speed's favor

slow garnet
#

So... they lied about slow speeds? I get why they did it, shitty, but good for us I guess.

astral haven
#

The problem is the drives are twice the heat and alooot louder

latent mural
#

when does the wooting 60he release to the us

astral haven
#

And they weren't faster because they were ofc smr drives

slow garnet
#

AAM wasn't an option I assume?

#

smr jesus christ.

astral haven
#

Well everything is hybrid now

#

Usually about half smr by platter area
So about 2/3 smr by capacity

#

The only exception are the top end helium wd gold's that don't say archive, and the exos and barracuda pro
For the reds I believe there's a line of reds that have no smr but they are espensive asf

#

Tldr get an exos and back it up to the cloud

astral haven
slow garnet
#

jesus do you just print money in your backyard or what? peperee

astral haven
#

Approx cost is 250 per year for 24tb of local + backed up storage
And I get to back up all my computers directly to it super easily

#

And I have it set up to show up as a direct network share on my nas (with the full 250tb of capacity)

#

Remember
Google workspace accounts aren't fed into the Google algorithm

#

And in most countries you have the option to require all your data to stay within that country's datacenters

slow garnet
#

That we know of. Yet. I'll keep looking on PCPartPicker for now as well as other places.

astral haven
#

Ooh
$12 ($13 including the domain) per month includes 2tb of storage now instead of 1

astral haven
#

And anyways, it takes a very short amount of time to set up a computer as an encrypting rsync relay to Google drive
Can even be done on a raspberry pi for goodness sakes

#

But I tell you
Shared Google drives are very very nice

slow garnet
#

I'll pass on that for now. Like I said, I've got some privacy concerns.

astral haven
#

It's an up front investment of a raspberry pi to fix that issue...

slow garnet
#

Well yes, doing so would resolve the issue, but, it's Google.

#

Less trustworthy than the slut next door. Probably.

#

(No offense to sluts.)

astral haven
#

No

#

Your pi encrypt the data before it goes to Google
Then your pi decrypts it when you request it

slow garnet
#

I get that, but once it's on Google servers, it could theoretically be there forever.

#

AKA once it's on the internet, it stays on it forever.

astral haven
#

Which is why you encrypt it properly?

slow garnet
#

Carmoben please mate, I just don't want to play with Google. At all.

#

I don't trust it, even if I put the best encryption on my family's photo/video gallery.

#

Not to mention being bitten by Google in the past.

astral haven
#

You either go expensive or you go cloud 🤷‍♀️

slow garnet
#

Expensive it is then. I'll have to save up, even if I wanted to get this out of the way right now.

astral haven
#

13 a month

astral haven
#

You can believe what you want
But our insurance and grantors say it's ok so we use it 🤷‍♀️

#

Like
There are actual laws that have huge penalties that Google hasn't broken yet

slow garnet
#

Are you blissfully unaware of the many times Google has been suedfined?

astral haven
#

Remember
Google considers "Business" customers differently

astral haven
#

Like

#

It's all about their free Google accounts...

#

And the addage goes the way the addage goes

slow garnet
#

Fine, maybe I can't find one relating to their business accounts. Doesn't change the fact that even if they do consider said "business" customers differently, that they're part of the PRISM program, and that I've been bitten by them before.

#

'Nough said.

astral haven
#

🤨

#

Noone is part of prism any more

#

bwcause they renamed it

slow garnet
#

Even if they weren't anymore, once X always X.

#

As stupid as that sounds.

astral haven
#

Then you definetly shouldn't buy any products from any company that has existed for more than 5 years and has anyone who has existed for more than that in their supply chain...

#

Lemme come up with an example of a company that does that...

#

Hmmm....

#

🤔

#

Yea nope
Not a single example I can come up with

slow garnet
#

Why do you think I buy stuff 2nd hand when I can...

astral haven
#

Because you want to make sure it has been tampered with?

slow garnet
#

lul what's to say first hand wasn't?

#

NSA last time I checked can and will intercept packages.

astral haven
#

That's really hard to do for helium drives

slow garnet
#

thonk what part of it? Is the PCB not outside the helium encasing?

astral haven
#

And if you have the NSA after you, and are on discord, it's too late

slow garnet
#

Not a matter of if, more like when lul

astral haven
#

Anyways I wouldn't worry about it
If you have any device with a CPU and modem, the NSA has access to it if they want it bad enough

#

That is if you are in the us

slow garnet
#

Canada. But we have our own equivalent of it. As for the helium stuff, that's news to me. Last time I checked PCBs are always outside the drive, and there is a very flimsy... connector? pressure connector? at the motor.

astral haven
#

The motor connector isn't the part that matters lol

slow garnet
#

I know, but said motor connector is generally attached directly to the PCB.

#

As such, you generally cannot remove the PCB without removing the motor connector.

astral haven
#

Yes
But the data connector is what connects to the data

#

Anyways
That shouldn't even matter either way

slow garnet
#

regardless, this doesn't change my opinion or view. i'm gonna save up. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

astral haven
#

Sure
As long as you know it's illogical, you do what you want
Tho if you are canadian, it's not exactly a free country as the meme goes

slow garnet

Better than the US at least...

astral haven

Freedom wise?
Nah
That's not the way the meme goes

slow garnet

Logitech, SteelSeries and Roccat have failed me to date (various different failures). Window Manager

junior ore
cursive summit
#

More linux terms

#

Boring

junior ore
#

actually its all Operating Systems. its just you don't normally change yours for windows or mac or android etcetera.

astral haven
#

Is it like Quadro desktop manager?

junior ore
#

no

#

its what and how you use to, well, interact with the system.

astral haven
#

Is it the new word for desktop environment?

junior ore
#

either primarily keybaord shortcut based, terminal, convential windows-like, max like, docker etcetera

#

no wait i got it mixed

#

here, better than my memory cells : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_manager

A window manager is system software that controls the placement and appearance of windows within a windowing system in a graphical user interface. Most window managers are designed to help provide a desktop environment. They work in conjunction with the underlying graphical system that provides required functionality—support for graphics hardwar...

#

one manages the applications, the manager

#

the desktop environment is basically the gui. roughly.

astral haven
#

Sometimes Linux folks wonder why people don't use Linux
I have absolutely no idea how they expect a system this fragmented to be put into production

junior ore
#

it's not. and this is purely optional.

#

it's not the default.

#

want to see default?

ashen spindle
#

yeah its not default because linux hates bloat so much you need to know what else exists and manually add it

astral haven
#

You missed the point per usual

junior ore
#

that depends on which linux

#

i don't see what you mean by "fragmented"

#

are you saying its because its jsut not all owned and sold by one company?

#

if you want there, there is a linux for that.

astral haven
#

So imagine I download a window manager on windows
That window manager doesn't prevent me from using the windows features

#

I can still win + left right up down etc

#

It just gives me extra features on top

junior ore
#

okay

#

and?

astral haven
#

Where do I go to look up those "os level" shortcuts for Linux?

junior ore
#

within arch you can install multiple window managers and switch between them within the login screen. to install you can just simply install it via the terminal with a quick command. so something like :

#

sudo pacman -S i3

cursive summit
#

Imagine having to install basic features

astral haven
#

Swing and a miss

junior ore
#

it would already have one

#

during installation you pick and choose what you want

#

you asked about installing extras

#

this was fucking it

#

what did I "miss"?

astral haven
astral haven
junior ore
#

okay then elaborate. you were saying about installing another window manager, right?

junior ore
#

or are you saying installing multiple together in one?

#

oh

#

ooooohh

#

i did miss the question

#

can you define "os level" shortcuts? you mean on par with window shortcuts like you mentioned as in win + left?

#

most desktop environments will include, in their settings, the shortcuts for such things. and configure them.

#

for instance, on my laptop : I have my start menu pop up with function+space

astral haven
#

"most" does not a standard make

junior ore
#

well thats because some people makem whacky ones 😛 the ones that come with linux operating systems will indeed come with that.

cursive summit
#

Is there even a basic linux

junior ore
#

you can literally install a desktop enviornment made by billybobjoe that doesn't ahve that, at your descretion. but it wouldn't be standard included in installation.

#

yes you can build a linux from scratch if you desire.

#

GNOME, KDE, and the other major used ones will all list their shortcuts

cursive summit
#

As in like, completely stock as shipped from Torvalds sex dungeon

junior ore
#

including the tiling ones like i3

cursive summit
#

Cause fuck Ubuntu and the rest

junior ore
#

well the thing is : Linux is open source stuff.

#

there is no "just a linux"

#

unless ytou build and compile it yourself.

#

i super recommend Arch or a 'pre-built' arch.

#

i specifically run EndeavourOS which is from the Arch branch but I don't have to go through the tedious process building it myself and it doesn't come with stuff I didn't want.

#

if you want the most straight forward : there is Manjaro.

#

both of these are highly respected.

#

better than ubuntu.

ashen spindle
#

And they are able to brick when you try to launch steam havo

junior ore
#

Manjaro is also Arch based*

#

cursive summit

So basically

ashen spindle

cursive summit

There is no basic linux

junior ore
#

you can get linuxs that are basic

cursive summit

junior ore

it just wont be called "linux".

#

no you can get really simple easy to use linux that is straight forward.

ashen spindle

Vexxs trolling aside one issue with Linux is that the basic reply is usually to go to a wiki since it’s to fragmented

junior ore
#

no it was the reply to someone trolling

#

i wouldn't suggest someone to go to the wiki for that.

#

i already tried to answer them.

#

but they ignored it

#

so i gave them a troll response.

Linux is an os
So I can use it to replace windows
No you need (insert distro of choice)
Ok so what distro has the best window management

Etc...

junior ore

it'll have the window managers

#

and DE

#

and drivers

#

and all that stuff

#

and partition managers

#

all in the installer, easy peezy
